Starting the Long Hot Summer in PaphosLast week saw our temperature climbing to 42degrees and everyone, tourists and locals alike, inevitably were heading for the beach.

The latest statistics show that in May touristarrivals totaled 293,181 compared with 276,244in the corresponding period of 2013, an increaseof 6.1%. Importantly, from the property marketperspective, May saw an increase of 2.4 percent in arrivals from the UK and a 15.2 per centincrease from Russia.

The statistics are important as both nationalsegments account for a major slice of Cyprusproperties sold to foreigners.

Certainly at Fitzgerald’s these two groups represent almost 90% of propertyinquiries and in May we have had a total of 149 accompanied viewings.

Interestingly, the Russians accounted for 21% of viewings and the British, 68%.With less than 100 properties on our books, this is a tremendous achievement, forus as real estate company and, particularly so for the owners who have entrusted uswith their property.

We continue to specialize in marketing Quality Property, Properties at RealisticMarket Prices with Title Deeds, the qualities that drive the property market interest. Our listings are increasing to meet buyer demands.

'Each and every property that we list has a serious WOW factors, as well as arealistic price' says Daryl, 'otherwise noone will even look at it in this marketwhere the market is swamped with properties to sell yet only 2060 sales are madeeach month to people fromoverseas.'

Shakespeare at Curium presents Julius Caesar

June 27, 28 and 29 at theAncient CuriumAmphitheatre.

High on the cliffs, theMediterranean washingthe horizon, lies theancient amphitheatre ofCurium. Built in thesecond century BC, it’s asetting so unique that it’sstill, to this day, used tohost numerous eventsthroughout the year.Chief of which– lovers ofthe Bard, prepare – is themuchawaited annual production from Shakespeare at Curium.

Produced under the auspices of the Performing Arts for Cyprus Charities, thisyearly performance brings together some of the island’s best amateur (and exprofessional) thespians in a philanthropic endeavour designed to both delightaudiences and raise money for a number of local charities.

A worthy undertaking, the muchloved event is now in its 53rd year and hasbecome an unmissable feature of the cultural calendar. And this year promises to beparticularly fascinating, for this is a play that has never been previously presentedat Curium.

Julius Caesar Written in 1599 and is quite simply, a play about a great Romanfailing. Marcus Brutus, theleading conspirator in theassassination of Julius Caesar, fails not because of a lack ofintelligence or authority, butbecause he holds on to hissincerity and principles in aworld that rewards manipulationand dishonesty.

Yet there are no heroes orvillains in this story. This is not aplay about petty scraps, self

Page 11: Digest July 2014

indulged romance or bawdy jests;it is a meaningful play about fateand power in the world. It is aboutRome, one of the greatcivilisations in history and thus aninspiring template to which allother realms can be compared.

Julius Caesar explores theintentions of the political class, the role the people play in theirown destiny and, above all else, the dangers of civil strife. Todaywe still look to William

Shakespeare for an understandingof life, such was his genius. If welook at the world, we would findboth distrust and adulation ofpoliticians, underrepresentation inflawed democracies and divisionin all walks of life.

Local Charities have nowbenefited by over 1 million Eurosand this year the profit will bespilt between four charities

Private British School ASPIRESince opening its doors in 2011,Private British School ASPIRE hasgone from strength to strength afterwitnessing a constant growth inreputation and number of students.

The Paphosbased school’s successis simply down to its qualityeducation.

This is delivered by experiencedteachers who recognise theimportance of an inspirational

learning environment.

ASPIRE, which caters for children from the age of three, follows the UK NationalCurriculum and guides students through GCSE, IGCSE and A level qualifications.

These qualifications are accepted throughout the world and are equivalent to thoseawarded in the UK.

After continued growth, ASPIRE is now preparing to move into a new stateoftheart building on Paphos’ popular Tombs of the Kings Avenue.

Situated just 1.5km from the centre of Paphos and with stunning sea views, the2700 square metre building will allow the school to introduce new subjects andactivities to its alreadybustling programme.

ASPIRE currently boasts a complete WiFi network, the next generation ofinteractive whiteboard technology, an ICT suite, an allweather sports pitch, alibrary, and a fullyequippedscience laboratory.

These will be joined by an art, design and technology suite, adance studio, and a 300 metrecovered recreation area whenthe new site officially opens inSeptember 2014.

Despite the expansion,ASPIRE’s original principlesremain the same.

Page 13: Digest July 2014

The school adopts a small class size policy which helps to effectively monitor thedevelopment of each individual child and ensure their educational needs are cateredfor.

Sharon Hadjiyiakoumi, Principal of ASPIRE, said: “At ASPIRE, we are fully awarethat each child has his or her own individual style of learning.

“Our staff therefore employ various teaching techniques to promote enthusiasm andunderstanding in all subjects.

“Alongside the rigorous British National Curriculum, ASPIRE also offers anextensive extracurricular programme to ensure all students can explore their talentsand interests.”

The school’s afternoon programme, which changes on a halftermly basis, hasincluded cookery, debating, business enterprise, drama and sports.

ASPIRE also organises regular walks and residential trips, both in Cyprus andoverseas, and is licensed to operate the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’sInternational Award.

The programme, open to students aged 14 and over, involves the completion ofrural expeditions and projects that offer a service to the local community.
