    ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG

OR EKG) In this noninvasive test, a technician will place probes

on your chest that record the electrical impulses that

make your heart beat. An ECG records these electricalsignals and can help your doctor detect irregularitiesin your heart's rhythm and structure. You may have anECG while you're at rest or while exercising (stress

    electrocardiogram).

    ECHOCARDIOGRAM

This noninvasive exam, which includes an ultrasoundof your chest, shows detailed images of your heart'sstructure and function. Sound waves are transmitted, and their echoes are recorded with a device called atransducer that's held outside your body. A computeruses the information from the transducer to createmoving images on a video monitor.

    PET F-18 FDG

(FLUORODEOXYGLUCOSE)A specialized PET scan which uses a form of glucose to

help determine if any specific areas of hear tissue haveexperienced permanent damage due to decreasedblood flow. It may be used after a gear attack todetermine which procedure, such as angioplasty orstenting of the coronary arteries or bypass surgery, may be beneficial, this test involves having the glucose

solution injected through an IV into your blood. Thena special camera takes picture of where the solutioncollects in your heart.

HOLTER MONITORA Holter monitor is a portable device that you wear to

record a continuous ECG, usually for 24 to 72 hours.Holter monitoring is used to detect heart rhythmirregularities that aren't found during a regular ECGexam.

CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION Cardiac catheterization involves passing a thin flexible

tube (catheter) into the right or left side of the heart,

usually from the groin or the arm.

    MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

(MRI) In this test, a short tube (sheath) is inserted into a vein

or artery in your leg (groin) or arm. A hollow, flexibleand longer tube (guide catheter) is then inserted intothe sheath. Aided by X-ray images on a monitor, yourdoctor threads the guide catheter through that arteryuntil it reaches your heart. The pressures in your heartchambers can be measured, and dye can be injected.

The dye can be seen on an X-ray, which helps yourdoctor see the blood f low through your heart, bloodvessels and valves to check for abnormalities.

CHEST X-RAYAn image is created by directing X-rays at your chest

and positioning a large piece of photographic film or adigital recording plate against your back. The X-raymachine produces a small burst of radiation thatpasses through your body and produces an image onthe film or digital plate. A chest X-ray shows an imageof your heart, lungs and blood vessels. It can reveal if

your heart is enlarged, a sign of some forms of heartdisease.
