Of course, we can use all the members and guests possible to help us in our most important event this year. As a special treat, the German Club has arranged for a special “GERMAN ON THE WATER” wine-tasting event Sunday, September 29th at Patoka lake (see separate article in this newsletter for details). It will be a fun two hours of tasting German wines, great appetizers, and socializing (and maybe a song or two?) with other GC members and guests as well as the general Community on a German-decorated boat at Patoka Lake. It would be FANTASTIC if the club could fill the boat alone! Again, see the separate article for details on getting your tickets along with a listing of the wines we’ll be sampling. Join the fun! A message from Laura………..

German Heritage Night at Strassenfest

The 2019 Jasper Strassenfest will feature an entire German Heritage night. Thursday night starting 5:30pm, the Main Stage at the Strassenfest is dedicated to continuous FREE German Heritage Events, Entertainment and Games. In 2018, the German Club provided funding to include German Heritage entertainment in Opening Ceremonies. It was a great success. Because of the hard work of the members, this year we had the funding to expand to an entire night of German events. Thank you to all of our members. The German Heritage Committee inside the German Club, was formed to tackle an entire night of German Heritage events. Members are Ginger & Kurt Hedinger, MaryLeah & Paul Siegel, Lacey & Ross Halverson, Van & Nancy Ziegler, Landen Weidenbenner, Branden Ferguson, Breann Lechner, Sandy & Mark Fierst, Paul & Laura Grammer. The German Heritage Committee worked to create new entertainment inside Opening Ceremonies, and new events following Opening Ceremonies. Thanks to Chocolate Bliss and Rotary Club, that have taken on two NEW German Heritage events, that will continue under their control for years in the future. The German Heritage Committee learned a traditional Bavarian dance called the Landler that will be performed on Thursday evening in front of Main Stage. Courtney Heberer, Music teacher at Jasper High School, composed a Strassenfest Waltz. The song will be debuted during a Waltz Demonstration in front of Main Stage. Birnie and Margie Jeffries and a dedicated group German Club members learned a waltz to accompany the Strassenfest Waltz. At the conclusion of the prepared waltz, the song will be played again. Members of the Waltz group will invite members of the crowd to learn the waltz as the song is played a second time. A Snowball Waltz in August sounds very refreshing. The Rotary Club of Jasper will be sponsoring a NEW event called “Learn to Dance the Schuhplattler”. The Rotary Club will teach the crowd the steps to the dance. Then the participants get to dance the song at different speeds. At the end of the event, the Rotary Club hands out FREE sugar cookies and bottled water. Chocolate Bliss will be sponsoring “Schokospiel (a Chocolate Game)”, another NEW event. Ann Knies from

Chocolate Bliss is providing 300 Special Design chocolates prizes and 6 Special Design Grand Prize chocolates for the game. At the end of the game Chocolate Bliss will open for the children to redeem winning wooden nickels for the chocolate prizes. The Lions Club will continue their long term sponsorship of the Box Parade. This fun Dubois County tradition is a crowd favorite for kids of all ages. LOG SAWING CONTEST

9:00 PM on Strassenfest Thursday on the main stage. Event is sponsored by the Jasper Deutscher Verein and the financial sponsor is Werner Saw Mill, Inc.

This event is the longest continuous competitive event of the fest, starting at the second fest.

This event consists of two people sawing a log. The first team winning moves on to the next round.

Registration is free a few minutes before the contest, and prizes are awarded to the first and second place winners to both men's and women's divisions.

Competition has gained quite a following through the years, usually with 50-60 people sawing and 300-400

4

people watching. It has even become a tradition for the queen's court to saw, and I think they and everyone else has a great time. The Herald is always there covering the event. Many times making their front page.

As you know, beginning this year, Thursday night is meant to celebrate our German Heritage even more than ever before. The Deutscher Verein has been asked by the Strassenfest Committee to keep the spirit alive. Probably no bigger part of this would be using a two person saw to clear the forest. Our ancestors relied on this skill.

If you have never watched this event, come and see what you've been missing. I think you will enjoy!

Beginning German returns in the Fall to VUJC!

If you're planning ahead for the trip to Pfaffenweiler in 2020, if you've never had the opportunity to build that foundation for your German, or if you'd just like a refresher for the German you already know, please join Dr. Ross Halvorsen and the first German class in a long time at Vincennes University, Jasper Campus.

It's only one evening a week, there won't be much homework, and you'll just have to find the time to keep up with learning new German words between classes. Pass/Fail is not an option at VUJC, but anybody is allowed to audit the course. If you're auditing, Ross will call on you only as much as you'd like. If you take it for credit, that's a different story. Intermediate German will be offered the following spring semester. If you are not currently a VUJC student, you will need to apply as a guest student (for application and enrollment information, please call 812-482-3030). The first class is Tuesday, August 20th, 2019, the semester lasts 16 weeks, and the last day of instruction is December 3rd. The textbook is Deutsch heute (ISBN: 978-1-305-07715-7) and please feel free to contact Ross at [email protected] with any questions.

VUJC needs a minimum of 10 enrolled to offer any language course and please help get the word out. Let's show community interest in the German language!

Fall 2019 German Level 1 Class (GRMN 101-J01) CRN #13936, is scheduled on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm - 8:45 pm in the JCCB Building, Room 211.

NOTE: This class is available for the public. You do not need to be a member of the Jasper DeutscherVerein to

attend!!!!!!

Sister Cities of Jasper Jasper Partnership Commission

Jasper Deutscher Verein GERMAN HERITAGE AWARD

"Honoring those who promote our German Heritage"

The annual German Heritage Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed generously his/her or their time, talents or resources to maintaining, improving or building upon our German roots in Dubois County. Sister Cities of Jasper and the Jasper Partnership Commission created the award in 1999. The Jasper Deutscher Verein is sponsoring the award.

This recognition is open to all individuals, not just residents of the City of Jasper, who give what they can in order to make a difference.

Because the efforts of these individuals are sometimes known only to a few, a nomination will recognize the work of those who generously support our German Heritage.

A committee, consisting of the Presidents of the Jasper Deutscher Verein, Sister Cities of Jasper, and the Jasper Partnership Commission, will judge all nominations. The Presidents will present the German Heritage Award during the German American Day Dinner celebration on October 3rd at the Schnitzelbank.

Past recipients of the German Heritage Award are Mary Jo Meuser, Claude and Martina Eckert, Dave Buehler, Linus and Sally Lechner, Joe and Irene C. Eckerle, Danny and Linda Wehr, Leo and Lora Lou Eckerle, the late Lowell and Joan Glendening, Dave and Janet Kluemper, Rafe and Phyllis Ackerman, Vic and Monica Knies, Gary and Rita Egler, Patti Goepfrich, Larry and Betty Hanselman, Ron and Dellie Keusch, Jim and Rita Corn, Lois Kuntz, Mike and Ann Ackerman, Stan Jochum, and Father John Boeglin.
