Diese Arbeit soll vor allem auf die Poetizität der sprachlichen Bezeichnung bzw. Beschreibung von Farben abzielen. Durch das Sortierungs- und Rekombinationsverfahren werden allerdings die Farbreferenzen und Querbeziehungen in der Tier, Pflanzen- und Mineralwelt aufgelöst und neu justiert. In Beziehung stehen damit nicht mehr farbverwandte Objekte aus verschiedenen Bereichen, was die intendierte Primärdeutung des Textes beeinflusste, d.h. eine wie auch immer gelagerte Primärdeutung, die nur eine poetische sein kann, muss nun selbst von der Leserschaft geleistet werden.

Im späten 18. Jahrhundert entwickelte der Mineraloge Abraham Gottlob Werner ein standardisiertes Farbschema, das es ihm ermöglichte, selbst die subtilsten chromatischen Unterschiede mit konsistenter Terminologie zu beschreiben. Sein Entwurf wurde dann von Patrick Syme angepasst und mit Beispielen aus

Flora und Fauna angereichert. Im vorfotografischen Zeitalter mussten fast alle visuellen Details über das geschriebene Wort erfasst werden, und wissenschaftliche Beobachter konnten sich keine Zweideutigkeiten in ihren Beschreibungen leisten. Werners Handbuch wurde zu einer unschätzbaren Quelle für Naturforscher und Anthropologen, einschließlich Charles Darwin, der es verwendete, um Farben in der Natur während seiner bahnbrechenden Reise auf der HMS Beagle zu identifizieren.
