WHAT DID ORACLE DO?

– 3/22/2011 - announced that they have decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor.

– This is relevant:

• In an SAP context for the Oracle Database 12.2,

• but even for eApps, Siebel, Rdb, ...

– Tried to justify their decision based on: “Intel management made it clear

that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium

was nearing the end of its life.” Not true.

„After multiple conversations with Intel senior management Oracle has decided to discontinue all

software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor. Intel management made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life"

HOW DID INTEL RESPOND?

– 3/23/2011 - Intel Reaffirms Commitment to Itanium.

– Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel Corporation “Intel’s work on Intel Itanium processors and platforms continues unabated with multiple generations of chips currently in development and on schedule. We remain firmly committed to delivering a competitive, multi-generational roadmap for HP-UX and other operating system customers that run the Itanium architecture.”

– Re-confirmed roadmap

• Tukwila (quad-core) released in 2010

• Poulson (8-core) on track to ship in 2012

• Kittson planning & design underway

– FYI --- Oracle & IBM both have a published roadmap with only ONE future microprocessor. Intel shows MORE than both of them.

HP’S RESPONSE?

– 3/23/2011 - HP Supports Customers Despite Oracle‟s Anti-customer Actions

– HP and Oracle have 140,000 common customers. An estimated 45% of Oracle licenses reside on an HP platform. HP is fully committed to support these customers.

– Reiterated that it will continue the development and innovation of Itanium®-based Integrity server platforms with its HP-UX operating system using a roadmap that extends more than 10 years.

– HP will continue to support customers running existing versions of Oracle software on Itanium-based Integrity servers, both existing and future platforms, during the same timeframe.

– According to IDC HP has 27% share of the total Worldwide UNIX marketaccording to IDC (2nd position) – so this is not about a small niche market with few customers

– One week prior to Oracle‟s announcement HP briefed 120 industry analysts on the future of HP‟s Integrity product line. Oracle’s announcement and its assessment of Itanium is 180 degrees different from the message that the industry analysts gave a very positive reception to just a week earlier.

HP SENDS LEGAL LETTER TO ORACLE OVER CHIPS DISPUTE

www.reuters.com SAN FRANCISCO, June 8 (Reuters) –Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N) said on Tuesday it has sent a legal letter to Oracle (ORCL.O) asking the company to reverse its decision to discontinue all software development on Intel's (INTC.O) Itanium microprocessor.…"We are going to take whatever means are necessary to get Oracle to meet the legal commitments they have made to support HP platforms.”

www.Techworld.com HP: Oracle is legally bound to reverse Itanium decisionHewlett-Packard has sent Oracle a legal demand letter, which could be a precursor to a lawsuit. "HP believes that Oracle is legally obligated to continue to offer its software product suite on the Itanium platform and we will take whatever legal actions are available to us necessary to protect our customers' best interests and the significant investments they have made” “Oracle's decision represents an illegal attempt to force customers running Itanium-based HP servers over to its own hardware platforms”

SAP„S OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATION: „DON„T PANIC“

Extract from SAP OSS Note 1575609:

“Based on the current information that is

available, no urgent action has been

identified for SAP customers on Oracle with

HPUX. In the last year, we have released

Oracle Version 11.2 for SAP products (see

Note 1398634). Oracle Standard Support

is provided for Version 11.2 up to the end

of January 2015. From January 2015 until

January 2018, Extended Support is

provided by Oracle. The Sustaining

Support Phase that has no time restrictions

then follows. Therefore, based on Oracle

Version 11.2, full support for HPUX in the

SAP environment is guaranteed for many

years.”

Gartner Client Guidance Based on

Oracle Itanium Announcement• DON’T PANIC!!!

• Be on latest Oracle software builds

• Push other ISVs to demonstrate solidarity

• Consider Oracle alternatives (DB2, Sybase, Websphere)

• If on NewGen Itanium – RELAX (at least for five years)

• If on early Itanium – Upgrade SW; evaluate HW ROI model. Consider DL980 if Unix cost model not obvious.

• If on PA-RISC – ditto (but even more so)

• If pen poised on Superdome2 upgrade – do you really want to spend 2011 executing major DBMS/OS/processor transition?

• If joint AIX/HP-UX or Solaris/HP-UX shop – consider non-Oracle to HP-UX and Oracle to AIX/Solaris

• In all cases – Accelerate web & app tier deployment on x86; evaluate readiness of x86 for DBMS

• Prepare for the domino effect across Unix market and beyond

• DON’T PANIC!!!

IBM SOFTWARE COMMIT TO PORT THE NEXT RELEASE OF DB2 ON HP-UX ITANIUM

From Inhi Suh, Vice President of IBM Information Management Product Strategy:

„ While Oracle abandons Itanium, IBM DB2 continues to treat HP-UX on Itanium as a tier one platform, providing customers with investment protection into the next decade. Oracle has announced that it has stopped any further development of its database software on Itanium. Meanwhile in the IBM Toronto Lab, the DB2 development organization continues to build the next release of DB2 in support of the HP-UX on Itanium platform and has no plans for any change in that platform’s tier one status. In fact, if you look at the history of DB2 support for Itanium, IBM has demonstrated a long track record of consistent support, delivering HP-UX Itanium support on the same day that we have delivered new releases on AIX, Windows, Solaris, and Linux. Unlike Oracle who has staggered its release dates leaving HP-UX customers running on Itanium behind”.

RECOMMENDATION TO CUSTOMERS

– There is no urgency to change anything, see SAP OSS note

1575609 – everything is safe until at least 2018

– The market is very dynamic right now, so any possible

migration target may turn out to be the wrong one after 3

years from now

– As there is no urgency to change anything today and there

is no certainty about the future of ANY migration target,

wait 1-2 years until the market has settled again and then

make an informed decision what to do

– At the end, there is only one platform neutral DB vendor left:

SAP!
