Canadian Automobile Association (CAA)10 TIPS FOR WINTER DRIVING

1. Get your vehicle ready for winter in the fall. 2. Install four matching winter tires. 3. Pack an emergency kit. 4. Learn and practice winter driving techniques before you need them. 5. Plan your trip; check road and weather conditions.6. Remove all snow from your vehicle before each trip. 7. Give yourself extra travel time in bad weather. 8. Avoid using overdrive and cruise control on slippery roads. 9. Travel with a fully charged cell phone. 10. SLOW DOWN and WEAR your seat belt.

YOUR SAFETY IN WINTER WEATHER

We never know what the weather will be like from one day to the next, but it is a good idea to be pre-pared for poor winter weather conditions during this time of year. Conditions such as snow and ice create risks for both drivers and pedestrians. We can reduce the risks by being aware, being prepared and taking precautions.

Good footwear, including boots with good treads and low heels, is a must. Please take the time to look out for and avoid ice and black ice on sidewalks, drive-ways and roadways, slow down when walking in poor conditions to reduce your chances of falling.

Darkness also increases risk of accidents for both pedestrians and drivers. Please remember to wear bright colours or reflectors if you are walking at night and make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of a car at any time of day.

If you need help removing snow or ice from your driveway or walkway, contact Student Assistance in North Toronto for Seniors (SAINTS), 416-481-6284or [email protected].

Here is some helpful information and winter driv-ing tips from “Winter Driving: You, your vehicle and winter driving, “ published by Transport Canada and CAA:• Snow and ice are more slippery at 0°C than at

-20°C or below.• Black ice is often found on shaded areas of the

road, bridges and overpasses long after the sun has come out. Watch for black ice at tempera-tures between +4°C and -4°C, when the road surface ahead looks black and shiny.

• Winds cause blizzard conditions, drifting, poor visibility and wind-chill effects.

• The safest strategy is to avoid driving in bad weather conditions.

• When driving on a snow-covered road, there may be more snow/slush between lanes than inside the lane, making changing lanes more difficult.
