Did You Know? Did you know that Khotso founded The Khabele School, created its philosophy and vision, its curriculum, and its culture? Did you know that when Khotso was fired he was asked to write a letter telling the community that he had found another job opportunity and was excited about leaving? This was the condition for receiving severance. Did you know that standard school protocol is that a founder’s children attend for free? The remaining Board members told Khotso that unless he accepted their termination agreement and announced to the community that he was moving on to a new career opportunity, that they would revoke that privilege. Did you know that all references to Khotso as the visionary, founder and executive director had been removed from the Khabele School website upon his firing in August? Recently, his name and title as executive director were added back on to the website. All his contributions in the school’s history remain completely absent. We don’t know what’s going on but wish there were some transparency. Did you know that the current Board is claiming Khotso’s life’s work (curriculum, methodologies, etc.) as their “intellectual property”? Did you know that Khotso is still technically a board member because his resignation was conditional and the conditions have not been met? Yet he has not been included in any Board meetings since August. Did you know that Khotso and Moya Khabele own the property downtown that is being leased to the school, and that Khotso and Moya are guarantors of the Brodie campus? They are responsible for all debt, yet their ties to the school have been completely severed. Did you know that at the merger, current Board members (then on the Primavera board), said they were fine with KEP LLC (Khabele Expansion Properties, LLC, owned By Khotso and Moya) leasing buildings to the school on Rio Grande campus? Now they are pointing to that arrangement as a conflict of interest. They claim that KEP LLC has been charging above fair market value, and although there is no evidence for this argument (financial documents in this packet demonstrate the contrary) they have used this argument to justify the ouster of Khotso. The reality is that the current rent for the downtown campus is 70% of what the LLC would earn if it rented to a private company. A broad constituency of educators were actively pursuing the opening of a school there. Did you know that in the past two years, all the Khabeles—Khotso, his ex-wife Moya, and his sister Inonge—have all been asked to leave the school?

Did You Know?Did you know that Khotso founded The Khabele School, created its philosophy and vision, its curriculum, and its culture?

Did you know that Khotso’s sister, Inonge, worked at the school with the intention of opening a sister school in South Africa? A broad constituency of educators were actively pursuing the opening of a school there.
