What is ShakeOut?

•A national earthquake preparedness campaign

•Leads up to a nationwide earthquake drill at 9.26am on Wednesday 26 September 2012.

Where did the idea come from?

•Based on the highly successful Great California ShakeOut - now an annual event involving over 8 million people

•West Coast had its own ShakeOut in 2009 involving 8,300 people

•Now spreading to other US states and to Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

Why now?• The National Exercise Programme provided

for an earthquake exercise in 2012

• ShakeOut brand provides a proven platform

• Opportunity to learn from Canterbury

• Build on earthquake awareness and to help people know the right actions to take in an earthquake.

Aim

Everyone who participates in New Zealand ShakeOut is better prepared to ‘Get Thru’ an earthquake.

Partnering with the Ministry’s successful Get Ready Get Thru public education programme.

•Focus on ShakeOut and earthquake preparedness in the build-up
