The First People of Hobsons Bay – Yalukit-willam.
The Aboriginal people who lived in what we now know as the City of Hobsons Bay are the Yalukit-willam, a name meaning ‘river camp’ or ‘river dwellers’. Their history and story are told in the book ‘The Yalukit-willam: The First People of Hobsons Bay’. The book features a number of contemporary Aboriginal artworks and is also available at all Hobsons Bay Libraries.

What does the Committee do??
We meet once a month (and correspond in
between) to discuss issues at Seabrook
Kindergarten including – staff, improving the kindergarten’s
website, purchasing new facilities for the kindergarten,
reviewing and updating the policies, and assisting with any
other issues that might arise to ensure that Seabrook
Kindergarten runs as efficiently as possible.
We are also responsible for making decisions about how the
Kinder operates. These are not always easy decisions, but
they are crucial for the effective running of Seabrook
Kindergarten.
The Seabrook Kinder Committee are looking for 3 or 4
extra members, please consider joining us. For further
information contact Mandy at the office.
Recycling
At kinder we love to recycle and the children are great at turning trash into treasure. We ask our families to please collect boxes and containers, paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, ribbons, fabrics and other interesting items you may have around the house. So before throwing something out, check with your child’s teacher to see if they can use it. Children create amazing things.
Working Bees
Working Bees are a great way to meet other families and are essential to keep our kinder looking great and being safe. Morning tea is provided on the day and the $50 maintenance levy paid upon enrolment is refunded upon participation.

The sandpit and the diggers are a great attraction and the children enjoy making deep rivers in the sand and filling them with water. Some children spend the whole time there, they love
it so much.
The children have been busy playing with play dough; rolling, poking and hiding treasures inside the dough. Playdough provides a great sensory experience and the
children love a familiar activity.
The children have been helping care for the garden to make lots of flowers to look at. The children really enjoy caring for the garden and love to see the flowers when they play outside.
Mudcakes are being made in the sandpit. The children bring them to use and invite us to eat them. Yum!

Hello Parents and Friends
The starfish group have been learning about the Aboriginal culture during Reconciliation week. We reflected on the fact that the Aboriginal people are the first known Australian people and own this land. I displayed a large map of Australia to show the children where the Aboriginals lived as well as some of
their special places they like to visit. We have talked about Arnhem land and that we have a family going to live there who came to kinder.
See you next term

Frogs and Turtle Groups The Children have shown a keen interest in a number of experiences this term. At the beginning of term we had the ‘Living Eggs’ at the centre and the children were lucky enough to hold an egg, hear the chicks cheeping within the egg and then witness some of chicks hatch during our session. They were able to participate in caring for the chicks over the next week before they went back to the farm.
Another interest that we have extended throughout the term with a variety of activities has been bugs and insects. It started with children’s drawings and paintings and through discussions, stories, songs and exploring our environment we have learnt a lot about the many mini beasts in our world.
The children took a closer look at our Spiny Leaf Insect.
We grew a hairy caterpillar using rye grass seeds in a stocking and learnt to care
for him as he grew and grew.
We look forward to seeing what great interests and ideas will spring forth from the children next term. Pamela and Joy

Dear Families, Term 2 is now drawing to a close and what a busy term it has been. During this term we have had many opportunities to engage in intentional teaching with the children. Through interactions and conversations with all the children we have discovered what the children are interested in and further motivated and encouraged their learning. The interest and learning areas have included chicken hatching, space, camping, collage and dinosaurs. The arrival of the chickens brought about much excitement. The children asked many questions and were most curious about the chicken hatching. Through our music and movement we also learnt the “CHICKEN DANCE” it was so much fun!
Setting up the incubator Life Cycle Book The chidren have enjoying the Chicken Dance”
What are the children learning? Language, learning and Communication –Discussing aspects of chicken life cycle
Mathematics – Observations, numbers, pictorial representations,
Dance /Drama – chicken dance
The children have shown interest in Imaginative Play. As an extension from our chicken hatching we set up a horse with a saddle and reigns for the children to use their imaginations. My intention was for the children to engage in imaginative play where they were able to explore their own possibilities with no set outcomes.

Dolphins group, Term 2 This term we planted some seeds in our garden that included climbing beans, lettuce, garlic, silverbeet and parsley.
We even made a scarecrow.
The children have continued to water the seeds and maintained them by placing coffee grounds on the seedlings to warn off the bugs that are eating the leaves, and measuring the
growth rate every week. We have also been searching for treasures and making treasure maps.
The children have really enjoyed mixing colours and think they are working in a lab.
This term we also had our mother’s night. The children pampered their mums with nail polish and making bracelets for them as well as serving them cup cakes.
Sue
It has been another jam packed term and we

THE IMPORTANCE OF READING
Reading stories is important for all children, and it is something the
Seabrook Kindergarten embraces through story time with the children, but
also with its Parents Library. In case you are not aware, in the foyer just
outside the kinder room there is a parent’s library, where the parents can
borrow educational books. A parent who recently borrowed a book provided
wonderful feedback on how informative these books were. Please ask the
teachers or Kinder Manager if you would like to borrow any of these books.

Fun activities for the kids!
What you need Autumn leaves Clear adhesive plastic Scissors A hole punch String or thin ribbon Large bare branch Bucket or large tin What to do Next time you are in a park or garden admiring the autumn foliage, help the children collect a variety of autumn leaves to take home and turn into a beautiful decoration.
Have the children press the autumn leaves between clear pieces of contact. Cut carefully around the outside of the leaves leaving a little border, punch a hole at the top of the leaf and thread some string or ribbon through. Attach the leaves to the bare branch, and stand the branch in a suitable container and enjoy autumn inside.
What you need Old pantyhose or stockings Scissors Plastic containers such as margarine or yoghurt Grass seeds Tablespoon Potting mix Stickers or felt pens
What to do Cut the leg of the pantyhose and hold it open while your children spoon in at least three tablespoons of grass seeds. Then add three to four cups of potting mix. Knot the stocking securely above the potting mix and shape it into a round ‘head’. Place it in the container.
Let the children make a face on the grass head with stickers or felt pens. Keep the grass head damp and in a few days it will begin to grow a
lovely head of bright green hair.
