Governing Council Sub-Committees

Parents, Carers and Friends Committee acts as a conduit for spreading information and goodwill between the school and parents in an inclusive and community-minded manner. Meeting dates and times are negotiated with the members.

Curriculum Committee monitors and implements the curriculum priorities of the school. The committee meets once or twice a term during school hours.

Facilities Committee monitors the Facilities Strategic Plan. The committee meets twice a term during school hours.

Strategic Directions Committee monitors the Site Improvement Plan and Strategic Directions. The committee meets twice a term during school hours.

Uniform Committee monitors the School Uniform Policy and Uniform Contract. The committee meets twice a term during school hours.

Finance Advisory Committee plans and implements the school’s budget. The committee meets twice a term after school.

Information is provided by the Aboriginal Education Team about programs and progress. Meetings are held once a term.

Other parent groups and workshops are held on a needs basis.

If you are interested in nominating for one or more of these committees, please contact Sandra Foresto at the school on 81614600.

Parent Community Forum

In October last year the Governing Council held a parent community forum to discuss the issues our school has been experiencing with the high volume of traffic on our school grounds after school and the related safety issues for our students. A number of solutions were suggested and the Governing Council is currently working through these with DECD, DPTI and the Port Adelaide Enfield Council to see if any of them can be implemented.

I look forward to seeing you at Sports Day on Friday March 17 and at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday March 29 at 6pm.

Curriculum Report

Snapshot grades Students have been busy and enthusiastic, starting the term well by engaging in their new topics and subjects for 2017. In week four of this term our teachers gave a ‘snapshot’ grade as an indication of how students are progressing in their subjects. This is not a predicted end of term grade but rather a quick judgement made about the student`s progress on Wednesday of week four. These ‘snapshot’ grades will be uploaded on to Daymap by the end of week five and teachers will also have opportunities to give students feedback on how they can improve their grade by the end of the term. We have included a step by step guide how to access these reports on the following pages. If you are concerned about your son or daughter`s progress in any subject please contact the teacher by ringing the school or by emailing the teacher. If you are having difficulty contacting individual teachers please contact me on 8161 4600. Please don’t hesitate to work closely with your son or daughter`s teachers in order to support their learning. We know that working together really helps young people to improve. The idea of giving Snapshot grades early in the term is to give students, teachers and parents an indication of any potential problems or general progress, while we still have time to help the student improve before they receive an end of term grade. You will also receive an end of term report posted home at the end of each term and this report will be based on more assessment tasks.

Curriculum Committee We have regular Curriculum Committee Meetings involving parents, teachers and students throughout the year held on Friday mornings at 9.15am. The purpose of the committee is to share information about curriculum and teaching and learning initiatives in the school and seek feedback on the effectiveness of our programmes. The first meeting is Friday April 7. If you are interested in attending please contact Sandra Foresto on 8161 4600.

As we start a new year, we welcome all of our new and returning students. As always, we will focus this year on quality curriculum delivery and providing a range of learning experiences for each student. During term 1 our major curriculum focus will be to introduce Big Write, a structured and levelled program looking at supporting all students to gain confidence and skills in writing as well as supporting development of oral language. We continue to strive towards developing positive links with our families and to this end, NEP meetings are well underway. This process gives an opportunity for you to discuss your goals for your child and to develop a shared plan for their ongoing success. I would like to thank you all for your contribution to these meetings and look forward to our shared work in supporting each child towards achieving success in their individual goals. Transport arrangements are always a high priority at the start of the new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to request your assistance in ensuring that taxi journeys to and from school are incident and stress free. In order to achieve this it helps if you:

Notify the driver in advance if your child is not attending on a given day Ensure your child is ready on time Escort your child to the car and make sure they are seated and belted Ensure that somebody is always at home to greet them at the end of the day

I would also like to remind parents/caregivers that any requests to change route to or from school have to be approved by DECD Transport. We will assist you in this process should you require changes in collection and/or drop-off arrangements. Communication between home and school supports the home/school partnership. Each day we will communicate with you through your child’s communication book/diary. This will include information about your child’s learning and engagement for the day as well as class notices and other important information. We encourage all parents/caregivers to read the information and also to use the diary to communicate important events in your child’s day to us. The Daymap parent portal also gives us the opportunity to communicate electronically if this suits you better. You can find a list of staff and home group teachers on the following page. If you would like more information about how to use this please contact us.

Year 12 Formal will be held in the Star Room at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Thursday 13 April 2017, between 6.30 pm to 11.00 pm for students in year 12. Pastoral Care Program

Our weekly pastoral care lessons provide opportunities for students to work with their care group teacher to consolidate their learning. Students will be involved in a wide range of programs and activities that include: preparing for sports day, exams and course counselling; participating in goal setting activities, SRC and House Captain elections, SRC class

meetings, House meetings, Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum, tertiary information sessions, transition pathway planning and year level, campus and whole school assemblies and

reviewing mid term/snapshot grades and then working with their teachers to discuss and plan improvement strategies to improve their learning.

Class of 2016

Our year 12 class of 2016 achieved amazing SACE results. 96.34 % of Year 12 students attained a Year 12 certificate (SACE Completion). This is 0.07% above the state average of all students in the students who completed their SACE, which was 96.27%. On Thursday 19 February a very successful Old Scholars barbecue was held for student

graduates from the class of 2016. This was an informal social event that was organised to

congratulate students on their achievements and to keep students informed about what is

happening at our school and an opportunity to maintain friendships.

Co-Education Middle Years Report

I would like to welcome the new students in Yr 9 and 10 who have come to us from other schools. Students have presented at the start of the year healthy, happy in school uniform and ready to learn.

Students in the middle school have settled down quickly into studies after the initial social greetings of catching up with friends who they may not have seen for weeks.

We welcomed the new year 8’s who are experiencing many firsts including Year 8 Acquaintance Night, which was a great success despite the heat.

Y8 Acquaintance Night Parents and students attending home group with RMSC Teacher, Patrica Leslie.

At present it is fantastic to see the large number of students who are accessing Homework Club up in the library after school. This is a great initiative and parents are encouraged to talk to students about accessing this service.

Other highlights to take place this term for 2017 will be -

Campus Assembly Wednesday 8 March Whole school assembly Thursday 16 March Sports Day Friday 17 March Immunisations Y8 Boys & Girls Tuesday 28 March Y8 Co Ed Camp Monday 3 April to 7 April

The Defence Industry Pathways Program (DIPP)

DIPP engages students in hands-on activities that have a strong link to the defence industry. By increasing secondary school student’s involvement in training programs inspires to lead them on to rewarding careers within the South Australian defence projects.

We congratulate the following year 10 RMSC students who were successful in joining the program and will attend Regency Campus of TAFE SA.

Wilondia Kasikile Jason Lor

The Gennaro Polvere Medals Awarded

Mr Polvere was a fantastic PE teacher at Roma Mitchell who sadly passed away earlier in 2016. Mr Polvere was heavily involved in soccer throughout the state and played a major role in getting the Specialist Soccer Program up and running at Roma Mitchell.

In honour of Mr Polvere we created the Gennaro Polvere Medal. It is a medal that will be awarded each year to one male and one female student who has shown great skill on the soccer pitch, sportsmanship, been a positive role model and upheld the school values.

Mr Polvere’s wife, Ms Rosie Polvere and two children presented the medals at the school assembly.

Sports Day March 17, 2017

There will be a shaded viewing area with seating provided for parents and caregivers. All students must wear the following sports items to Sports Day; Shorts or Track Pants PE Uniform shorts Specialist Sport Soccer and Hockey shorts PE Uniform track pants Loan PE Uniform shorts will be provided by the school if your child does not have a pair. Anniversary of the Apology to Australia's Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander people

On Tuesday February 21, the Aboriginal Education team held its first Indigenous Parents Meeting and Morning Tea for the year.

During the Morning Tea, parents and staff discussed important information about support available for Indigenous students, as well as a range of exciting and new programs that the Aboriginal Education team has planned for 2017. Parents were able to learn about the work that was being done to help support their students through our Aboriginal Education tutors, and discussed what other support might be offered to improve student learning.

It was great to see some parents attend, and would love to see even more come to our next meeting, which will be held in Week 4 of Term 2.

If any Indigenous parents wish to know any more information, or want to discuss support for their child, please contact either Alistair, Julie, or Mark.

February 13, 2017 marked the ninth anniversary of the Apology to Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the House of Representatives on February 13, 2008, by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=b3TZOGpG6cM).

The apology related to past laws, policies, and practices, which have impacted on Australia's First Nation Peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations. It is a day to look back and acknowledge the impact the Stolen Generations had on all Indigenous people: past, present, and future, and to look forward to embrace and acknowledge the rights and freedoms of all Indigenous Australians.

It was a great opportunity to have a discussion with your students about our Indigenous Australians and the important part they play in our society, as well as discuss how, as a society, we need to continue to support and embrace the world's oldest living culture.

As always, some fantastic websites that can help you broaden your own understanding of this important event, resources for students and classrooms, and other important information is in these URLs below

A message from SAPOL

In this modern world there are any number of things which can distract a driver from the task of driving a motor vehicle. To have your attention taken away from the road can mean that you will miss something that is important to drive safely – vehicles stopped in front; a child crossing the road; or a car entering your line of travel. Here are two of the top five distractions.

Passengers

Young drivers have a greater risk of crashing when they have friends in the car – the statistics demonstrate this is especially so for young novice drivers. The stats also tell us that there’s more chance of causing a fatal crash when you have two or more friends in the car, especially male passengers. However, the risk is reduced when carrying an adult or a child, compared with carrying no passengers.

safety-safer-journeys-issue-5.pdf

Mobile phones (talking and

texting)

Using a mobile while driving can increase the risk of a collision by four times, according to several studies. Sending a text message is even worse. Learner and P1 drivers are not allowed to use ANY function of a phone (including hands-free) while driving. Drivers may only use a mobile phone to make or receive a call, or use the audio player if the phone is secured in a fixed mounting. If your phone is not in a mounting, to answer your phone it must not require you to touch or manipulate the phone in any way. All other functions such as texting, video messaging, online chatting, reading preview messages and emailing are not allowed. The new laws make it clear that a driver in a moving or stationary vehicle (unless parked) MUST NOT HOLD a phone in his or her hand other than to pass the phone to a passenger.
