From the Rectory
The Gospel reading for Sunday 13 March (John 12.1-8) records the time when Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus’ feet with an expensive oil. Ju-das, the treasurer to the group, is reported as suggesting that it was a terrible waste and the money could have been better used. There we
have the dichotomy which most of us face in daily life; undoubtedly we do as churches, and certainly we do as a nation. What someone sees as
waste is another persons’ benefit.
Whatever our views the point here is that sometimes we all need to think seriously about the use of our time and money. Doing something that will improve the lot of others or even another: bringing reconciliation, putting back together that which is broken – or even more likely improve that which already exists is not waste. Not everything can be reduced to a
financial balance sheet in this world –where increasingly it seems the
price of everything is known but the value of nothing.
We are in the season of Easter. Good Friday showed us what some thought of the values of Christ and the Kingdom he came to show. Easter Day brought new life and hope but was only enabled by the ‘wasting’ of one man’s life. The fact he rose from the waste and lived confirms for
many the truth of what he stood for.
I wonder if all too often we are caught up in the mind-set that to do something extra for others or even within our families and friends is a
‘waste’, because it doesn’t accord with the world’s mindset?
With all good wishes,
The Revd Chris Childs

Buxhall WI
Jackie Collins stepped into the breach for our February meeting when the planned speaker was unable to attend, and brought us a variety of Japanese flower arrangements to illustrate her talk
about the culture and meaning of the art of Ikebana. Lots of us plan to follow this up with a visit to her Japanese themed garden when she opens her garden to the public this summer to raise money for
St Andrew’s church, Great Finborough.
The April meeting on Wednesday 20 April will be a presentation on Sugar Craft by Glenda Price. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm at Buxhall Village Hall. New members and visitors are
always welcome.

Great Finborough and District Garden Club
The weather this month has been drier, brighter and warmer so that the spring flowers are blooming beautifully and it has been warm
enough to get out and about in the garden.
Our March meeting was an illustrated talk by Colette Barrere about Alan Bloom and his passion for perennials which led to the foundation of the lovely gardens at Bressingham and her time spent working with
him on that project.
The club also had a chance to view a candle stand for St Andrew’s church before it was handed over to the Revd Chris Childs. It will be dedicated at the Easter Eve service and be used for the Paschal candle. The club donated the funds to purchase the English Oak and
the turning and construction was done by Ian Cameron.
The next meeting will be held in the Pettiward Hall on Thursday 14 April at 7.30pm when Rainhild Raistrick will be speaking to us. Born in Tanzania she is now a noted botanical Illustrator who has travelled widely to paint rare and exotic species in their natural settings as well
as native plants around her home in Suffolk.
The 2016 Village Open Gardens will be held on Sunday 3 July in aid of a Charity to be decided at our April meeting. If you would be interested in opening your garden to help us in our efforts we would be delighted to hear from you. For details of how to volunteer to open your garden
please contact John Davey (details below).
Finally, if you are interested in joining the garden club or would like to join us for any event you will be very welcome. Membership is only £15.00 per household per year or £2.50 per person for a single meeting. For further information contact either: John Davey on 674401 or [email protected] or Judith Cameron on 672978 or

News from your District Councillor - John Matthissen
Tree Planting Special news and thanks this month to everyone who has donated trees over the last few years. With half a dozen helpers I was able to plant 65 native trees at the Museum of East Anglian Life recently. A few of these replaced ash trees I helped to plant a few years ago but which were affected by disease. The remainder will grow into a hedge to shelter the museum’s pigs at the bottom of the field near the chapel. Thanks also for the donation of tree guards and stakes which will keep the young saplings safe from rabbits and deer. More trees in pots will be welcome this spring,
so keep a look out when digging over the vegetable plot.
East Anglian Devolution? Since last autumn representatives of all the councils in the region have been meeting Government to discuss possible devolution of some government powers to Combined Authorities, for example trunk roads, flooding and skills and apprenticeships. In September the Government considered a proposal by the seven districts of Suffolk, then extended the negotiation to the councils of Norfolk, and then in the New Year announced that Cambridgeshire should also be included (27 councils in all). This negotiation has remained behind closed doors while repeatedly changing tack at Government insistence. By the time of publication, a final deal may have been announced but I and the vast majority of other councillors have not been asked our views on the matter. If you would like to know more, please ask and I’ll provide as full a briefing as I can of this complex situation, and also my own views on the subject should you wish to hear
them! Alternatively, check out the local press for updates.
Litter Picks It is heartening to know that so many local people are this spring tackling the litter that blights our country highways and byways. Whether you are responding to the plea to “Clean for the Queen” or a supporter of
“Republicans Against Rubbish” your contribution is welcome.

Fraud alert!
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau is warning people to beware of
fraudsters who turn up on your doorstep and ask for your signature.
The Proactive Intelligence Team debriefs convicted offenders to identify emerging fraud trends and has found that your signature is one part of a puzzle that the fraudsters are putting together. Your signature could be the final piece - once they get hold of it they can drain your bank account
or commit identity crime.
A convicted fraudster who was recently interviewed said: “If we want to get someone’s signature it’s really easy. All we do is put on a fluorescent coat or vest, knock on the door and ask the person to sign for a letter or a flyer. They don’t need signing for, but nobody ever questions why and we don’t hang around for a chat! Once we have the signature we can make changes on their bank accounts and authorise fraudulent money
transfers.”
How to protect yourself
Not expecting a delivery? Be suspicious.
Question what you are signing for and look for official identification.
If you do sign, just print your name.
Check your bank and financial statements carefully and report anything suspicious to the bank or financial service provider
concerned.
Criminals commit different frauds depending on the type of the personal information they manage to steal. Your identity is a precious commodity;
you should take every precaution to ensure that it isn’t abused or stolen.
If you believe that you have been a victim of fraud, you can report it online at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by telephone on
0300 123 2040.

Rural Coffee Caravan
The first outing of the Rural Coffee Caravan was a bit of an eye-opener… There were 21 of us there and apart from the range of home made cakes and scones, coffee and tea there was a host of information on all manner of local services provided in an impressive display by Garry Simmonds of the
Rural Caravan.
The information covered topics like:
Making the best use of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors -
a great display by Arnie Bennett
The Suffolk Police ‘Safe Key’ system to return lost keys
Ways to discourage cold-callers to your door
‘Poppy Call’ volunteers to help any ex-military personnel with small
jobs
Orbit Handy Help volunteers to help over 60’s with any DIY projects
How to tell the difference between scam mail and the genuine article
Garry can also help in identifying methods to reduce your energy
bills. Never a bad thing these days.
The Rural Caravan brought another notable addition to the event… a range of local businesses represented by folk happy to answer questions on a mind-boggling diversity of subjects. If you have questions about gardening essentials, local farmers and what they grow, how acupuncture can help you, perhaps a career in nursing or teaching, learning a language, getting
the best from your camera...
If any of these strike a chord, or you are interested to learn more about the local services mentioned earlier, perhaps attending the next visit from the
Rural Caravan on 25 April is for you.

East Anglian Air Ambulance
We are still collecting stamps, ink cartridges, mobile phones, and old & foreign coins. We have had a problem with passing on ink cartridges since the end of November. The collecting point we use is St Peter’s & St Mary’s Parish Church in Stowmarket and from November to January it was filled with Christmas Trees, so no ink cartridge bins were out. Since then the church has been redecorated and again the bins were not available. The decorators have now finished and the ink cartridge
collecting point should be available once again.
Torticas de Navidad (Cuban Christmas Cookies)
At the Women’s World Day of Prayer held in March, Carole Hearn made these cookies. She says, “This recipe was sent by the Cuban Women. The
cookies were very tasty and no end of people asked for the recipe.”
Makes 36 cookies (I used a cup which held 10 fluid ounces)
1. Preheat oven to 190˚C/Mark 5, line a baking sheet with parchment.
2. Cut 18 of the cherries in half and set aside. Chop the remainder.
3. Cream the butter and sugar together in a small bowl (with wooden
spoon or electric mixer)
4. Gradually add the eggs and vanilla.
5. Sift together the flour, baking powder and bicarb.
6. Add these dry ingredients to the creamed sugar and mix well.
7. Gently fold in the nuts, raisins and chopped cherries.
8. Take a teaspoon of dough and roll it in the cornflakes.
9. Place the cookies on a baking tray, place a cherry half in the centre of
each cookie.
10. Bake for 14 minutes (depending on how your oven cooks, they all
vary) then cool on a rack.
1 cup butter 2.5 cups S.R. Flour 1 cup chopped nuts
1.25 cups sugar 1 teasp baking powder 1 cup raisins or sultanas
2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup glace cherries
½ teasp bicarbonate of
soda
2 cups corn flakes lightly crushed into smaller pieces, NOT crumbs

I hope there will be a good congregation for the visit of the Dean to Little Finborough on 10 April at 6.00pm (which has resulted in the
cancellation of Great Finborough’s Evensong).
I also draw your attention to the first visit of Bishop Martin to the
Deanery when he preaches and presides at Holy Communion at Stowupland on 24 April at 6.30pm. If you need a lift please contact your
Churchwardens who will be happy to organise.
Can I thank all those who have managed the arrangement of flowers in
the parishes over Easter?
The Lent Course has been oversubscribed this year and we will be running a further course in May – details next month. And if anyone is interested in Confirmation please speak to Rachel or me as we will be
beginning meetings in June.

The Little Ernie Lottery - fundraising for Buxhall Village Hall
Dear Fellow Villager,
The little Ernie Lottery has successfully raised much needed funds for the village hall for over 20 years. Monies have been used in three main ways: profits have contributed to the overall running and maintenance costs of the building; they have helped to maintain a contingency fund should anything major happen to the structure and its contents; and finally have assisted with any new purchases needed for hall use - for instance last year the hall was completely re-decorated and new tables
were purchased.
Please continue to help the village by supporting the Little Ernie Lottery. It helps keep the village hall going which plays an important role in our
community, providing a centre for social and sporting activities.
Q: How does it work? A: Very simply! Annual subscriptions are available at £6 per entry- with no limit imposed per household or per person—although all entrants must be over 16*. Each subscription received is allocated a number, and ten monthly draws (June to March) are held per year. Four prizes are awarded each month (**£25, £10, £5 and £5) - with winnings doubled for the Christmas draw. Winners are drawn in public at a monthly village event and announced in the Buxhall Broadcast. Prizes are paid by cheque and delivered directly to the
winners.
*The law stipulates that children under 16 are not allowed to directly participate- so all entries must be in an adult's name. Your signature at time of entry is taken as evidence that you and all lottery subscribers
applied for are over 16.
**Please note: prize levels are dependent on a subscription level of 180 participants. In the event of a smaller number of participants, payment may have to be scaled back—although the chances of winning will re-main as great. Last year an extra bonus was added at the discretion of
the Management Committee due to the fantastic take up.
Please see overleaf for an application form, entries to be received by
23 May 2016.

Buxhall and Great Finborough Over 60s
Candlestick Club
Well the winter is nearly over and for the Over 60s, the opening meeting is only a few days away. Easter will also be over and we shall be on British Summer Time with the lighter evenings. Our opening meeting is on Thursday 7 April at 7.00pm in Buxhall Village Hall. We have acquired the services of an entertainer and the Committee will provide some nibbles. Janet will be collecting the subscriptions which we are keeping the same for a few years: £6 per person. So all in all it should be a pleasant
evening.
The first outing of the year is on 11 May and takes the form of a Mystery Tour. The coach will be leaving Great Finborough Old Chapel at 9.45am, then Buxhall Village Hall at 9.50am then on to Harleston for 10.00am. A
more comprehensive outing list will be available at the April meeting.
Please support our Over 60s Club, we are always looking for new
members. If you require a lift on 7 April, please let Keith know on 736598.
