When design engineers have toprovide flexible connections forcomponents in specific applica-tions, separate off areas bet-ween them and simultaneouslyensure a leakproof partition,this problem can almost alwaysbe solved by using diaphragmsmade of elastic materials.

As well as customised dia-phragms we also offer a com-prehensive standard range ofover 300 different dimensions.

Every diaphragm is a tailor-made solution

There is a difference whether adiaphragm is used for control,switching, accumulation orpumping. In addition, the ope-rating conditions and mediumhave a direct impact on the de-sign of a functional diaphragmand the housing. At the initialdesign stage it is already necessary to take account of design-related outline conditi-ons such as ■ pressurisation on one or both

sides■ ratio stroke to diameter■ alteration of effective diame-

ter via the stroke■ need for an insert and/or

covering using reinforcementmaterial.

For this reason we jointly de-velop every diaphragm withyou exactly in accordance withthe defined function.

In addition, we optimise thesealing bead for clamping. Thetype of pressurisation also hasa major impact on whether fabric reinforcement is incorpo-rated in the diaphragm and inwhat manner.

Calculated functional reliabilityWe use these basic parametersto proceed with calculation, simulation and detail optimisa-tion. For the FEM calculationswe have our own material models for elastomers.

With single-sided pressurisation a fabric reinforcement is positioned differently

in the diaphragm structure than with pressurisation on both sides.

Automated FEM calculations ensure short, highly cost-effective development and optimisation times. Here the experience of our staff is a guarantee for the fast and economical realisation of customer-specific solutions.

Strategic reinforcementIn particular the mechanicalproperties of a diaphragm canbe optimised with fabric andother new types of reinforce-ment materials. To cater for theoperating parameters to opti-mum effect when selecting theappropriate reinforcement, weuse fabric reinforcement madeof polyester, polyamide andaromatic polyamide.

The location and position of thereinforcement fabric is matchedto the operating conditions notonly via the diameter of the diaphragm but also within thelayer structure. This means thata reinforcement is always posi-tioned where it has the greatesteffect on the long-term resi-stance and life cycle costs ofyour product.

Optimum protectionthrough PTFE foil coveringFor aggressive media as oftenoccur with diaphragm pumpsPTFE foil coverings permanentlyfixed to the diaphragm or modi-fied PTFE foil coverings haveproved to be highly effective forshielding. With foils made of electrically conductive materialwe can supply components forATEX-compliant units.

Over 400 elastomer blends for chemically, thermally and mechanically optimised diaphragms

Pumping hydrochloric acid,control with compressed air oraccumulation involving hydrau-lic media – every diaphragmmust be exactly tailored to thechemical, thermal and mechani-cal stresses. Selection of theelastomers depends on this. But sealing at the clampingarea, processability, the controlprecision of the diaphragms orpermeation behaviour are alsocriteria for the selection of materials.

Virtually all of the standard elastomers available today canbe used for the development ofyour diaphragms e. g. NBR,CR, VMQ and EPDM as well ashigh-performance elastomerssuch as IIR, ECO, FKM, CSM,HNBR, FVMQ or Simriz®

(FFKM). With over 400 blends,Simrit offers the largest basisfor the strategic development ofdiaphragms in the world.

These diaphragm materials ofcourse comply with the stan-dards governing the relevantapplication areas such as FDA,BGA (German Federal HealthOffice), KTW, WRc, ACS, NSF International or they have approval via OEM customers.

Our own highly specialised mixing systems and develop-ment cooperation projects withleading polymer and chemicalsmanufacturers guarantee state-of-the-art diaphragm develop-ment.

In addition to a sound know-ledge of materials and elasto-mer development tailored todiaphragms we can offer youunique production know-howbased on the global pool ofknowledge of the FreudenbergGroup with its own TechnicalDevelopment Centre, researchfacilities and partners NOK(Japan) and Freudenberg-NOK(USA).

Controlled diaphragm production to validation of components

Our outstanding experience inthe manufacture of diaphragmsof any diameter includes allproduction steps: weighing of the mixing components, creation of the raw mixture,production of blanks, pretreat-ment of the carrier parts, deep-drawing of fabrics, vulcanisa-tion of diaphragms and alsothe removal of burrs and sur-face treatment.

For elastomer processing we used both compressionmoulding (CM) and injectionmoulding (IM). The CM processhas proved to be an ideal production platform particularlyfor diaphragms plus fabric, foil and insert while IM is suitable when manufacturingdiaphragms made solely of elastomer or including a metalsection.

Diaphragms are manufactured in diameters ranging from a few millimetres to almost

1 metre in size. The smallest diaphragm produced to date has an outer diameter of

5.4 mm with a vulcanised metal section 1.8 mm in diameter.

We also coordinate the shapingprocess to the respective requi-rement profiles. At our plantdiaphragms are shaped bypunching, cutting, water jet cutting as well as laser beamcutting, as shown here, to ensure extremely precise dia-phragm edges.

Our production processes areexactly matched to your requi-rements.

Test rigs for testing componentsFollowing development and ma-nufacture the overall process iscompleted with the validationof diaphragms. We subject dia-phragms to rigorous testing onyour unit according to specifiedtest parameters.

Climatic cabinets are also available to ensure that testingcorresponds to the actual ope-rating conditions. This not onlyincludes low-temperature (downto –40 °C) and high-tempera-ture behaviour (+220 °C) butalso the switching performanceof diaphragms. Service life tests using different media andvariable switching cycles arepossible as well. If wished,comprehensive validation docu-mentation detailing the qualitiesof the diaphragms in your spe-cific unit can also be provided.
