in diam. The obv. side of this token is that of the

token struck in commemoration of the birth of the

only san of Napcfleon, III,, (Napoleon Eugene Louis Jean Josephe Prince Imperial n~ le 16 mars 1856).

This prince (who was killed by the Zulus in 1879)

is depicted in a crib above which hovers an angel

and which is illuminated by rays coming from a

star. The whole is surrounded by: AUGUSTE

PRINCE QUE DIEU ETENDE SUR TUI SA PRO- TECTION DIVINE." Hey.: same as 31b.

England did not honor any individual partici- pant of the period of the Crimean Campaign by nu-

mismatic mementoes. France, however, did not neg-

lect to do this. It was my desire to be able to

illustrate the foll eying five medals; but, various

reasons prevented me from doing so. All these

medals are of one type, 2-23/32 inches in diameter,

and executed by Borrel.

34. In Memory of Marshal de Saint-Arnaud, Obv.:

the head of the marshal, facing left¯ Surrounding it:

"ARN.JACQ.LE ROY DE SAINT ARNAUD." Rev.: an oak wreath and the inscription briefly citing his

biography, ending with the words "... DI~BAR-

QUEMENT EN CRIM]~E ALMA." An adventurer,

as was his sovereign, Saint-Arnaud earned recogni-

tion during the conquest of Algeria and then helped

Louis Napoleon to secure his throne. He was the

first commander-in-chief of the French army that.

landed in the Crimea¯ He died nine days after the

Battle of Alma.

35. In Memory of Admiral Bruat¯ Obv.: the head of

¯ . COMMANDANT EN CHEF DE L’ARMEE D’ORI-

ENT . . ." During the conquest of Algeria he be-

came well-known over the fact that he suffocated

some Arabs who took refuge in a cave. He took over

the command of the French army in the Crimea in

May, 1855, from the recalled Marshal Canrobert,

and after the fall of Sebastopol, was granted the

title of the Duke of Malakhov.

37. In Honor of Duke de Morny. Obv.: the head of

the duke facing left, surrounded by "CH.AUG.JOS.

LOUIS DUC DE MORNY." Rev.: the wreath and

the biography "... AMBASSADEUR EXTRAORD.

ST.PETERSBOURG . . ." This outstanding per- sonnage of the Second Empire, immortalized from a

negative point of view in the novels of Victor Hugo

and A. Dodeaux, was a bosom brother of Napoleon

IIL He was also the son of Queen Rortense; how- ever, who his father was, was never clearly estab-

lished: either Comte de Flahalt, or the Dutch Admir-

al Verhuell. Occupying various responsible posts

in the empire, which had given him the opportunity

to become quite wealthy, de Morny was sent to St.

Petersburg at the end of the Crimean War. He at-

tended the coronation of Alexander II, with the title ambassador extraordinary. He was married there to

Princess Troubetskoy, having charmed the court

circles by opulence and lavish spending.

38. In Honor of Marshal Niel. Obv.: the head of

the marshal, facing left, surrounded by "ADOLPRE

NIEL MAR~CHAL DE FRANCE." Rev.: a wreath and the biography "... G~N]~RAL DU GI~NIE EN

CRIM]~E . . ." A person who particularly enjoyed

confidence of Napoleon III, he was sent to the Cri-

mea to be a silent observer and to insure the reali-

zation of a multitude of witd military plans of the

"little Napoleon" who at one time was looking for-

ward to placing Niel at the head of the army -- which

would have been a salvation for Sebastopol - how-

ever, firmness and rectilineousness of Marshal

Pelissier triumphed and Sebastopol fell!

I conclude the French series with two satyrical

tokens in honor of the"vampire" of France, tho they

came out after the shame of Sedan in 1870 (unknown

whether of a German or French origin). After all,

the vampire in question started sucking blood al-

ready in the Crimea and continued it thru Italy,

China, Sytia, Indo-China, and Mexico, having in- volved the already bloodless France in a war with

Prussia. After giving himself up to the conquerors,

he died in exile in England in 1873.

39. In II0nor of Empress Eugenic. This is an ex- quisite silver medal, 1-13/i6 inch in diam., depict-

ing the beautiful Empress Eugenic on ob~cerse. In the

undercut is "A. BOVY, D’APRES J. PEYRE."
