As you know we have just completed our 44th academic year at the seminary. We are preparing for our next year and a new group of fi rst year seminarians. As always, I ask that you keep us in your prayers.

Finally, in each issue we include a response envelope as a way for our readers to support the seminary. If it is within yours means, I encourage you to make a gift to support our mission to provide our Dioceses with qualifi ed priests, the lifeblood of our Church. Thank you for your support and may our Lord bless and keep you safe.

MEleven Graduate at 44th Commencement

Monsignor Keith R. Brennan, Rector-President of St. Vincent de Paul Re-gional Seminary, presided over its 44th Commencement Exercises on May 10, at the St. Vincent Chapel on the semi-nary campus here in Boynton Beach. The commencement address was given by Sr. Rosa Monique Peña, O. P., Vi-caress of the Adrian Dominican Sis-ters; former Director of the Department of Religious Education, the Catechist Certification Program and the Catechu-menate Process of the Archdiocese of Miami. Sr. Peña’s address, “Education and Ministry in a Fragile World,” was warmly received. Rev. Mr. Roberto

Cid gave the valedictorian address. Following the ceremony, over 200 guests and friends of the graduates gathered for a reception in the refec-tory.

The degree of Master of Divinity was conferred upon eleven candidates. Fol-lowing graduation, ordinations normal-ly take place in each graduates respec-tive Diocese. Newly ordained priests are typically given some vacation time, and then assigned by their Bishop to a position in the Diocese.

“I ask that you join with me in congrat-

ulating our Class of 2007 and pray that they may each provide many years of faithful service in ministry to the peo-ple of God,” said Monsignor Brennan.

Since its founding in 1963 St. Vin-cent has granted degrees to nearly 500 priests who have gone on to serve parishes throughout Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and elsewhere. The only bi-lingual multicultural theologate in the southeastern U.S., a free standing, graduate professional school of theol-ogy committed to providing continuing education for clergy, religious and lay-persons of all denominations.

Dialogue 3

Seminarian Chris LeBlanc was born eight days before Christmas in 1981. Chris’ family owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Gladwin in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Adopted by Alphonse and Catherine LeBlanc, he is the youngest of 11 siblings, eight sisters and two brothers.

When his father’s health weakened, the family sold their dairy farm and returned to the Chippewa Indian Reservation in Brimley, Michigan where his father had grown up and where he could receive medical support. Chris attended the small K-12 school in Brimley, which is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, until the sixth grade.

“My father passed away and I moved with my mother to Crestview, Florida, where one of my sisters was living,” said LeBlanc. “There I attended middle and high school and graduated from Crestview High School in 2000.”

DiscernmentChris recalls that “as a child, our pastor would often visit our home for dinner. Through these visits I developed an admiration for him and this planted the seed of discernment in my heart. While in high school, I was active as an altar server and as a musician in the parish choir. My presence and activity around the church began an increase and I found that I truly enjoyed the ministries I was engaged in. I soon began assisting with religious education and helping out in the parish office. Then people began asking if I might be interested in a vocation to the priesthood. Indeed I was interested, but I was hesitant. As I would confirm later, I knew very little about what the priesthood really was and what it would ask of me. Still, I felt a calling to at least seriously discern a religious vocation.

“I began meeting monthly with a group of men discerning the priesthood led by our

diocesan vocations director. After a year of discernment, I chose to explore my call further in the seminary. At this point, I was convinced of only one thing about a vocation, I had a call to discernment. Throughout my years in seminary formation, discernment has taken different shapes. I have been challenged to find my vocation through personal, human and spiritual growth. The challenge has been to find my identity as a man of prayer and relationship with God before I could ever find a vocation.”

After graduating from high school, Chris made the decision to enter the seminary and began classes at St. Joseph’s Seminary College outside of New Orleans. He received an undergraduate degree in Philosophy in May of 2003 and began his graduate studies at St. Vincent de Paul.

Fraternity, Charity and Generosity “Unfortunately, my mother suffered a stroke in October 2004 and I decided to take a leave of absence form my studies to care for her and reflect on where God was calling me.” He returned to Crestview and took a job as a Special Assistant and Escrow Closing Agent at a friend’s law firm. Early the following year his mother decided she wanted to return to Michigan. Once his mother returned to Michigan, Chris moved to Seattle, Washington and a human resources position with Target.

“Mom went home to the Lord in April of 2006 shortly after I had decided to re-enter the seminary and continue my studies. I returned to St. Vincent de Paul that August. This summer I am on a Clinical Pastoral Education assignment in Washington, D.C.

“I was pleasantly surprised at the primacy placed on prayer and spirituality by the faculty of St. Vincent’s. It has proven to be a profoundly positive and enriching experience. One of the greatest features of St. Vincent de Paul is the great community we have. The fraternity, charity and generosity present in the student body, faculty and staff are a testimony to the strong leadership present here. I and my brothers at St. Vincent embrace our discernment and formation with a great love for God’s people and His Church. This vocation is not simply our vocation, but the Church’s vocation and we strive to lay our lives at the service of the People of God.”

Music has played a special role in Chris’ life. “I took guitar lessons from a man in my parish as a teenager with the understanding that I would play for Masses. Music has the ability to speak to everyone in some way. I enjoy spending free time writing and singing music.” Recently, Chris has used his musical gifts to help parish and local charities in his diocese through concerts and CD sales. His second recording, “Lift Up Thy Voice”, which includes several original writings, is to be released this summer and all proceeds from its sale will go to benefit the work and ministry of his parish.

Chris is a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and has several other hobbies and interests. “I enjoy studying Slavic history and teaching myself Russian, a slow and arduous task.

WThe Challeng of A 44 Year Old Facility: A Continuing ProcThe majority of the physical plant at St. Vincent de Paul is more than 40 years old and while it has served well, there is a continuing effort to maintain and modernize many elements. In addition, there are hoped-for major additions.Campus Administrator Keith Parker oversees this ongoing program. “Each year we establish a budget for certain updating projects to bring portions of our facility to contemporary standards.” Most notable are recent renovations to classrooms 1, 2 and 3.“The air-conditioning systems for these classrooms were updated, suspended acoustical ceilings were installed and improved florescent lighting was added,” he noted. “We’ve gone from what some considered dim, uncomfortable echo chambers to modern classrooms.”Keith also noted the parking lot lighting installed in the early 60’s has been replaced by a safer and more secure system. He’s also seen to the replacement of air conditioning chiller serving the Administration Building and installation of wireless or Wi-Fi access to the Internet for student rooms.

New Signage on the WayAnother improvement project that has been recently completed was new directory signage for interior roadways on campus. He advised, “This will make it much easier for campus visitors to quickly and easily find their way once they arrive.” There are plans to replace the main entrance sign on Military Trail, in the not too distant future, as well.

our electric distribution were installed in 2006.

Keith explained, “This generator will enable us to operate the refectory during periods when our normal electric feed is out. That will help make us more self-sufficient and allow the community some relief from the heat and humidity, so common during the summer.”

Continuing campus maintenance activities include replacement of time worn equipment, painting and emergency repairs. The refectory was recently painted and the refrigeration for the walk-in coolers in the kitchen was replaced. According to Parker, “We also refinish the wood on our doors and windows. That’s a substantial endeavor since there are about 500 doors on campus.”

Other projects either in work or planned include reconfiguration of the offices for the Pastoral Care Department, additional air conditioning replacement and new furniture for the refectory and some student rooms.

More Private Suort and Funds are NeededWhile this work continues, it is limited in scope to available capital. Parker continued, “There is a recognized need for funding for several major projects.

Our student rooms are 9 feet by 12 feet, 43 plus years old and none has shower or restroom f a c i l i t i e s within the room. There are few college campuses left in the U.S. that have

rooms this small, even at the least expensive schools. Furthermore, students must walk outside to shared restroom facilities. I hope we can plan

for new dorm rooms in the not too distant future.” That also holds true for technological upgrades to classrooms and new laboratories for homiletics. One way supporters can help is by joining the Rector’s Guild. Funds from the Rector’s Guild can make a significant impact on the overall success of operations and the environment. “A new residence facility and technologically advanced classrooms and labs would enable the seminary to

become involved in distance learning initiatives for clergy and the laity plus on campus residence programs during the summer months. These are multi-

million dollar capital undertakings that I believe would be a wonderful support to our mission of training future priests and laity.”Keith summarized, “For 40 plus years the seminary has done a spectacular job helping to form, educate and train new priests. With

continued support of our benefactors and the top notch team of faculty and staff, I believe we’re poised to continue that tradition for the next 40 years and beyond.”

Fr. Tim Sherwood –

T H E TOage, right before joining the Navy. Yet, my fi rst memories of considering priesthood was as a boy watching my step-father pray the rosary and going to Mass with him. My fi rst serious discernment was in the Navy. Our chaplain on ship was a priest, and he would have me do various things for him. One day he asked me if I had ever considered becoming a priest. I started seriously considering it from that day forward.

“My path was somewhat crooked. I entered college seminary at St. John Vianney in Miami after a four year enlistment in the Navy. After two years, I left the seminary thinking that priesthood was not for me. I went back to Missouri and had a number of jobs, like police work, landscaping and house painting. I eventually went back to school on my own for a time and even became a seminarian for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. I graduated from St. Louis University as a St. Louis seminarian, but transferred back to the Diocese of St. Petersburg and spent one year at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. I then requested a one-year leave of absence and worked at a hospital in Washington, Missouri for that year to further discern my vocation. Finally, after that year, I came back and fi nished my studies. I graduated from

The path to the priesthood for Father Tim Sherwood of the Diocese of St. Petersburg was in his words “crooked” since it included several directional changes and a range of experiences. He was ordained in 1993 and currently serves as pastor of St. Joseph Church in St. Petersburg, his fi rst pastorate.

Father Sherwood grew up in rural America. “They were happy years of country life and small town values,” he notes. The son of Laurence Ludwig and Gwendolyn Ludwig Sherwood, Father Sherwood’s biological father, Randolph Sherwood, passed away before he was born. His mother then married Laurence Ludwig, who died in 2005 just six months short of his 100th

birthday. “My half-brother was killed in 1976 and my mother is still alive, but struggling with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

The Ludwig family moved to St. Petersburg in 1980 shortly after Father Sherwood graduated from Union High School in Missouri. Father Tim came to Florida in 1983 after a four-year enlistment in the Navy. He then attended St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami for two years.

The Path to the Priesthood“I am a convert,” said Father Sherwood. “I became a Catholic at 18 years of

St. Vincent in 1993 and was ordained on May 22nd of that same year at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle in St. Petersburg.”

In addition to his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University with dual majors in Philosophy & Letters and Theological Studies and Master of Divinity from St. Vincent, Father Sherwood has a Master of Arts in Story Arts and Reading from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN, and a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL. He is a doctoral candidate in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA, and plans to graduate in May of 2008.

“All of my post-ordination studies have focused on preaching. My motivation for advanced studies was, and continues to be, very simple: self-improvement

and continued growth. I enjoy the challenge and want to be the best priest I can be, with God’s help.”

With responsibilities as a pastor and student Father Sherwood has limited free time, but he enjoys “listening to music, playing guitar, movies, books, friends, walking, travel, magic tricks and of course, storytelling.

“I fi nd my work at St. Joseph’s parti-cularly fulfi lling. It is one of only two parishes in our diocese with a signifi cant black Catholic population. Sunday Mass is an energetic and uplifting experience. We have a fantastic Gospel Choir that gets everyone on their feet clapping, singing and moving to the music. Our liturgy is normally 11/2 to 2 hours long, but the time seems to fl y by and nobody even notices. ”

Father Sherwood has “good memories of my time at St. Vincent. I formed strong bonds of friendship with many

seminarians, most who are now priests, that will last a lifetime.

My experience with the faculty and staff of the seminary was also very positive.

Value of a Regional Seminary “The policy of the diocese where I am doing my doctoral studies during the summers is to send their seminarians to a number of different seminaries around the world. There are some benefi ts to that approach, I suppose. However, I fi nd that the benefi ts of a regional seminary create a greater collegial bond and familiarity between its priests and dioceses. There is also the advantage of greater oversight in the training of seminarians, particularly with a focus to specifi c pastoral needs in that geographical area. One obvious example at SVDP is its bilingual resources. The need for Spanish speaking priests in Florida is increasing.”

SEMINARIAN JEAN R. FRANCOIS HONOREDJean Robert Francois has been named as the Caring Kitchen volunteer of the year for his flexibility, willingness to go that extra mile and all around caring for the people that we serve. Jean Robert has been assisting at The Caring Kitchen for two years now and has been called upon to perform a variety of tasks. From unloading trucks, to visiting shut-ins, to leading prayer groups, Jean Robert has shown the utmost respect and love for those that we serve. Jean Robert has been instrumental in helping a Caring Kitchen participant to reinstate her food stamps, spending one entire afternoon at the food stamp office helping to present and explain the misunderstanding that had led to the family being disqualified for the benefit. We have called upon Jean Robert to interpret on many occasions, which makes our work with the Creole speaking community ever so much more effective. Because of volunteers serving at the Caring Kitchen, hot lunch is served to an average of 177 people each day.
