สวสดวนปใหมจากแผนกครสเตยนสงเคราะหลเธอรแรน นเปนวารสารฉบบแรกของป 2009 ซงผอานจะไดรบความรเกยวกบชวตของหลายคน ไดใช “ของประทาน” เพองานครสเตยนสงเคราะห โดยแตละคนนนมขอ งประทานต า งๆ เ ช น ม คว ามร แ ละประสบการณเกยวกบสงคมสงเคราะห มของประทานดานศลปหตถกรรม หรอความปรารถนาของนางงามทจะใชชอเสยงของเธอเพอชวยผทตองการความชวยเหลอ ขาพเจาเชอวาเรองราวตางๆ เหลานจะเปนแบบอยางทด ใหพวกเราไดใชความสามารถและของประทานทตนมอย เพอสาแดงความรกและความหวงใยตอเพอนบาน ความรกเปนเหตใหมแหลงทรพยากรทอดมสมบรณ นอกจากนยงมเรองราวของผหญงคนหนงท ตดเชอเอชไอว จากการแบงปนความรสกสวนตวของเธอ ทาใหเราสามารถเขาใจวามนยากลาบากมากทจะหาคนทไวใจและคนทยอมรบเธอ เปนเรองทาทายอนใหญหลวงสาหรบครสเตยนทจะสรางครสตจกรใหเปนสถานททชวยชวตฝายจตวญญาณและบาบดรกษาสงคม ใหครสตจกรเปนทประกาศ

แลวใหทานนากลองนมาถวายใหครสตจกรในการนมสการวนอสเตอร เมอรวบรวมแลวครสตจกรจะตดสนใจวาจะนาเงนถวายทไดไปชวยสงเคราะหคนยากไรหรอนาเงนถวายดงกลาวไปสนบสนนพนธกจตางๆ ของแผนก ครสเตยนสงเคราะห พวกเราขออวยพรทานในโอกาสเทศกาลมหาพรตและขอใหเปนชวง เวลาแหงการหยดคดใครครวญในชวต ใหเปนเวลาแหงการอธษฐาน อานพระคมภรและเปนเวลาทจะชวยเหลอเพอนบานของทาน

สงเคราะหฯ ไดรบพนธกจเขามาใหมอก 2 แหงคอ สถานรบเลยงเดกอมมานเอล ซงตงอยบรเวณใกลชมชนแออดยานคลองเตย โดยเปด รบเลยงเดกอายตงแต 3 ถง 6 ป ปจจบนมเดกประมาณ 80 คน สวนบานสรรเสรญนน ตงอยใตทางดวนใจกลางชมชนนองใหม

เขตคลองเตย โดยเปดใหบรการรบเลยงเดกเลกอายตงแต 6 เดอน ถง 3 ป ปจจบนมเดกอยประมาณ 30 คน มเดกหลายคนจะอยทบานสรรเสรญและเขาเรยนเตรยมอนบาลทสถานรบเลยงเดกอมมานเอล ในวารสารฉบบ ตอไปจะมรายละเอยดของพนธกจทง 2 แหงน

Greetings from Director

Dear readers, Happy New Year from the Lu-theran Diakonia Department! In this first issue of year 2009 you will get a chance to read about the life of several people who have given their “talents” for diakonia work. And how different are those gifts! Knowledge and experience about social work, artistic skills to make handicrafts or a wish of a beauty contestant to use the public-ity to help those in need. I believe that these stories can be encourag-ing examples for all of us to use our skills and strengths to show love and compassion to our neighbours near and far. Love is really resourceful! In addition to that there is the story of an HIV infected woman. From her personal sharing we can learn how difficult it can be to find someone you can trust and gain acceptance. It is another great challenge for all of us to build our congregations to be places for spiritual support and social heaing, where hope for the future is pro-claimed and lived out.

P.S Starting from the beginning of year 2009 there are also two new ministries placed under the LDD. The Immanuel Day Care Center is situated on the edge of Khlong Toey slum area and offers a safe day care place for about eighty children aged 3-6 years. Whereas the Home of Praise is situated under the express way in the middle of the slum area and provides day care for 30 children aged from 6th months to three years old. Many children start in Home of Praise first and continue in the Immanuel Day Care Center later. In the next issue of the LDD News there will be more about these two important ministries.

This time the Family Development ministry wants to invite us to con-tribute more to our own family life. We easily take our family life as granted at least as far as there are no problems. However, putting some extra effort to our family life can bring much happiness to us and even to the life of the congre-gation. There is a new resource book available in English (in proc-ess to be translated in Thai) and also a one day seminar about the issue has been planned. The Diakonia Sunday of the ELCT is also approaching. As it will be on the first Sunday of Lent it will fall on 1st March this year. The Diakonia Sunday will be time of takeoff for the annual Lent time Dia-konia collection. The LDD has pre-pared purple money boxes to be sent to congregations as has been done already couple of years. On the Diakonia Sunday of the ELCT, we would like to ask you to take a box home, and donate to those less fortunate during the 40 day Lent period. The boxes will then be re-turned to the congregations for Easter service. Your offering will be used to help those in need in

นางสาวนาโอม แลม วง แมน มชชนนารจากเขตปกครองพเศษฮองกง เธอเดนทางมาเมองไทย เมอเดอนพฤศจกายน ป ค.ศ 2007 เธอไดรบเชอในพระเจา เมอเธออายตงแต 6 ขวบ โดยคณพอของเธอ เปนคนแรกทแนะนาใหเธอไปรวมกจกรรมทครสตจกร ตอนแรกพอไมคดวาเธอจะไปครสตจกรจรงๆ (ตอนนนครอบครวยงไมเชอพระเจา) จนเธอไดรบบพตศมาในวนครสตมาสเมอป ค.ศ1996 เมอเธอเยาววย คณแมของเธอบอกเธอบอยๆ วาไมควรทางานเปนผรบใชนะ เพราะเงนเดอนนอยและมชวตลาบาก และเธอกคดเชนกนวา เมอเธอโตเปนผใหญแลวจะไมทางานเปนผรบใชในครสตจกร ขณะเมอเธอเรยนอยชนมธยมศกษาปท 5 เธอเรมคดถงอนาคตของตนเอง เธอใฝฝนอยากมอาชพ

เปนนกสงคมสงเคราะห เธอจงเลอกศกษาในสาขาวชาสงคมสงเคราะห ทมหาวทยาลย จนเธอไดสาเรจการศกษาปรญญาตร เธอเรมทางานกบผปวยทบกพรองทางจตและกลมเยาวชน เมอเธอศกษาในมหาวทยาลย เธอไดสมครเปนสมาชกองคกรแคมปสครเสด ฟอรไครส ฮองกง ชวงนนเธอไดยนขอพระคมภรไดกลาววา “แตทานทงหลายจะไดฤทธเดชจากพระวญญาณบรสทธ...” (กจการ 1.8) เปนเหตทาใหเธอรสกซาบซงใจ ชวงทเธอทางานอยนน เธอไดเขารวมโครงการ “มชชนทม” หลายครง ในปค.ศ 2003 เธอไดเขารวมกจกรรมมชชนทมทประเทศไทยโดยบงเอญ ตอมาเธอรสกวา เธอไดรบการทรงเรยกจากพระเจาใหทางานมชชนสาหรบคนไทย และมนใจวาพระเจาทรงนาเธอใหเปน

มชชนนาร เธอจงเรมศกษาหาความรเกยวกบงานมชชนและดานศาสนศาสตร นอกจากนนยงไดไปศกษาดงานครสเตยนสงเคราะหทประเทศไทย จนกระทงเมอเดอนกนยายน ป ค.ศ 2008 เธอไดเรมทางาน โดยไดทางานกบพนธกจ 3 แหงดวยกนคอ พนธกจศนยกาลงใจ พนธกจบานพระคณ และพนธกจเรอนจากบคนจน งานทง 3 แหงนนทาใหเธอไดรบประสบการณทงดานความคดและวฒนธรรมทแตกตางกน “ดฉนขอบพระคณพระเจาพระองคไดประทานกาลงทจะเผชญกบความแตกตางน และตอนนดฉนกาลงเรยนรวธทางาน “แบบคนไทย” หวงวาสงเหลานชวยใหเธออยในสงคมไทยและประกาศขาวประเสรฐกบคนไทยได

A Sturdy or a Fragile Family?

At the end of last year my col-league Ms Kirsi Salmela provided me with a copy of book called “Strengthening the Family” by Anna Kaarina and Matti Palmu. It was a great book that I’ve been probing for a while. I spent a lot of time reading and studying it be-cause I found it useful and it corre-sponds directly to me and my fam-ily. I think that the family ministry should be given both interest and importance and the content of this book should be prepared for study materials to educate various groups of people. For example it could be used in premarital coun-seling for youth. Even married couples and other groups could study it as well. This ministry is about building a solid foundation for Christian families. I would like see Christian families to live in harmony throughout their marriage life.

Several churches have seen the importance and begun the work by arranging family counseling

I think that this matter is very im-portant for the church. It connects directly to the lives of church members. When many Christian families gather together they will form a big family, a congregation. The size of the congregation often depends on the number of fami-lies involved. There is also no special guarantee for the success of Christian families if much needed care is not put in to it. They can fall short and fragile like any pitiable families.

“Strengthening the Family” is a good manual for families. Pastors can also use it to educate their members. If you have any ideas and interests for this family min-istry, you are welcome to join in to translate this book in Thai for the use of the church in the imme-diate future.

centers, whereas many other churches have not yet put a serious emphasis on this ministry. From my own experience during my marriage preparation period I met with a pastor for 4-5 times for Christian premarital counseling. After that the marriage ceremony got under way and counseling was appropriately completed. Then it was time for us as a husband and a wife to move forward, and un-dergo trial and error as a couple. Either joyful or miserable was up to us as a couple. There were no programs that would assist with advice and knowledge after the ceremony.

If Christian families are fragile, it could, as a result, stall the growth of the church. I believe that sturdy and prompt families will be a strong foundation for a well-built church. The process to build strong families will need a keen effort. It will not happen automatically. It is necessary to use time to study and learn to understand how to live a

นบเปนเกยรตและเปนความชนชมยนดอยางยงท คณเลนา อเกล นางงามนอรเวยป 2008 ไดมาเยยมพนธกจหอพกบานอมมานเอล เมอวนท 23 กรกฎาคม 2008 ทงเจาหนาทนกเรยนตางตนเตน เฝารอคอยเธอมาเยยม และรสกประทบใจในความรก ความเปนกนเองทเธอมอบให เธอแทบไมมเวลาพกผอน และใชเวลาเยยมดงานของพนธกจอยางคมคา ในชวงเชา คณเลนาไดไปเยยมครอบครวนกเรยนหอ พกฯ 2 คน ณ อาเภอโขงเจยมและอาเภอสรนธร จงหวดอบลฯ เธอพดคยกบผปกครองของนกเรยนอยางเปนกนเอง และยงไดรวมรบประทานอาหารกลางวนกบครอบครวของนกเรยน ณ อาเภอสรนธรอยางไมรงเกยจ สรางความประทบใจตอครอบ ครวของนกเรยนเอง และเพอนบานทไดพบเหนเธอยงนก

The beauty came to visit

In the afternoon Ms Lene visited the secondary school, where students from Immanuel Home study, at Phibun Mangsahan district. She received a very warm welcome from both the administrators and stu-dents of the school. As a result of this visit the Im-manuel Home is now even better known among the teachers and other students. In addition to the visit to the school Ms Lene also interviewed a former stu-dent of Immanuel Home who has already finished his studies and has now returned to work as a teacher at his old school. It was an honor and great joy to get Miss Norway 2008, Lene Egeli, to visit Immanuel Home on 23rd July 2008. All of us, both the staff members and stu-dents got really excided since hearing about the up-coming visit and waited eagerly for the day to come. During the visit we felt impressed about the loving and easygoing way in which she met us. She hardly had time to rest during the visit; the whole day was really used efficiently. In the morning she visited the families of two stu-dents in Khong Chiam and Sirinthon districts in Ubon Ratchathani province. Ms Lene talked with families in a very informal manner. She also ate a lunch with one of families at Sirinthon district, her approach, again, being demure. The family and the neighbours who saw it were really impressed with her attitude.

understand regardless of language or age. Unfortunately Hiroko and her fam-ily have to leave Thailand. It is very sad to say goodbye for such a wonderful co-worker, teacher and friend. But we feel fortunate to have had Hiroko and Naoki among us. Their work has been a special blessing for the Home of Grace as well as the whole ELCT. She has also brought Bible stories alive through using miniature dolls to tell about the life of Jesus. The time and place where Jesus lived and who he really was can be diffi-cult to understand. Hiroko used a lot of time to study what the envi-ronment was like. She has made everything look like it was during those times starting from the envi-ronment up to costumes. In her exhibitions the whole scenery, where tiny little dolls are put onto, tells what it was like in the time when Jesus lived. Women living in the Home of Grace have also had a chance to see the exhibitions about Jesus’ life. Last Easter we went to see the Path of Passion of Christ and be-fore Christmas we were able to see the Nativity exhibition. Those vis-its were very important to the women. One mother wrote into the visitor book: ‘Now I understand what we have learned in the Bible studies in the Home of Grace.’ Many others said the same. Hi-roko’s husband Naoki has taught Bible lessons in the Home of Grace besides his many other du-ties.Through the handicrafts Hi-roko wishes to convey more than beauty of the art. All her works proclaim the gospel in a very sen-sitive way, which is easy to

Making handicrafts has been one major activity in the Home of Grace since it was opened. Silk roses, cards and little bags are made for sale. Beside that Japa-nese artist Hiroko Sugioka has been teaching various handicraft skills in the Home of Grace for many years. Pregnant women and mothers have made toys and cloth-ing for their babies in her guid-ance. Hiroko has also designed a mother doll for the Home of Grace. Hiroko and her family came to Thailand seven years ago. When her husband Naoki was busy working as a pastor in the Evan-gelical Lutheran Church in Thai-land, ELCT, she wanted to help somehow in the church too, but did not know how. Then she found her way to the Home of Grace and was asked to teach mothers-to-be new handicraft skills. Hiroko started to teach them sewing. After the first little toy she has taught making clothing for children and different accessories and decorative. Her talent was also noticed among the women of Samrong congregation and then she taught them too. Many women and children in the church have benefited from the new ideas and skills of doing dif-ferent handicrafts.

I have one wish in my life. I pray to God that he would create a cure for HIV so I could live a normal life, working and being able to support my family. At the mo-ment there’s never enough money, but I am grateful because God is with me every day and hears every prayer. I also believe that one day God will respond to my prayers and that’s the most important thing in my life.

My name is “Khulaap”. I got HIV from my husband fifteen years ago. I discovered that I was infected when I got pregnant. When my doctor told me about it I was shocked and became very sad. I thought that I would have to di-vorce my husband, but the doctor told me not to do that because if either of us would remarry later the virus would spread even fur-ther. After the death of my husband my life became very hard. I used to be a housewife while my husband had been working to earn a living for us. Now I had troubles in finding work for myself and even if I found something the wages was often very low, not enough even for daily life.

There were long periods of time when I couldn’t get any work at all. This was because many work-places do not employ HIV in-fected people. When I did manage to get work some clients that knew about me began to avoid the place I worked in, which was not good for the business. Around these times I was bap-tized. After this my life improved and I felt better. At first I didn’t have much faith in God, but as I noticed what a turn my life had taken I started to believe in God more and more. I felt safe know-ing that Jesus had died for me and watches over me always. Even though I am a Christian it’s still hard for me to open up about my condition, because I’m afraid that I will lose my friends.

“It’s possible”

Ms. Naomi Lam Wing Man, is a missionary from Hong Kong and has been in Thailand since Novem-ber 2007. Naomi has believed in God since she was six years old. It was her father who first introduced her to the church activities, however he didn’t think that Naomi would continue to go to church (her par-ents still do not believe in God). Naomi was baptized on Christmas in 1996. When she was a child, her mother often told her not to even think about becoming an evangelist be-cause of the low income and hard life. Even Naomi herself didn’t think that she would work in the church in the future. As she fin-ished the fifth year in secondary school,it was time to make deci-sions about her future - she had a dream to become a social worker. Therefore, she studied Social Sciences in university

Since September of 2008 she has been busy working, diving her working time between the Aids Support Center, the Home of Grace and the Prison Ministry for Chinese. In her working places she has experienced dif-ferent cultures and different ideas. “I am thankful to God that He has given me strength to face the differences, and I am learn-ing more about Thai working style”, she tells. Hopefully that will help her to live in Thai soci-ety and share the gospel among the Thai people.

After her graduation she worked with the mentally retarded and youths. When she studied in the university, she had become a member of Hong Kong Campus Crusade for Christ. That time the Bible words “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my wit-nesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) came into her heart deeply. During the work-ing years, Naomi had joined the local (Hong Kong) mission activi-ties several times. In 2003, she got an unexpected chance to join a mission trip to Thailand. After that trip, she got passionate about the mission work in Thailand and for-tunately God led her to become a missionary. She knew that she could apply her knowledge and working experience in the mission work, but did some further studies in theology anyway, and made a trip to get to know diakonia works of the ELCT before moving to Thailand.

According to their experience the Family Ministry has helped to strengthen families in Africa and also contributed to the fast church growth in the area. The couple is also the author of the trainer’s handbook for Family Ministry. “Strengthening the Family” is a manual for carry-ing out Family Ministry in the congregation. All church co-workers, pastors, evangelists and interested mem-bers are welcome to the semi-nar.
