    AIM: - Whether modest weight loss through dietary changes and increased

    physical activity or treatment with the oral diabetes drug metformin

    (Glucophage) could prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus in

    study participants.

    STUDY DESIGN: - 323! study participants from 2" clinical centres around the

    united states were randomly divided into di#erent treatment groups

    Group A- called the lifestyle intervention group received intensive training in

    diet physical activity and behavioural modi$cationGroup B- too% &' mg of metformin twice a day

    Group C- received placebo pills instead of metformin

    RESULTS: -

    Group A- is% of developing diabetes was reduced by 58% . *bout 5% of this

    group developed diabetes each year during the study period as compared with

    ++, of those in the placebo group

    Group B- is% of developing diabetes was reduced by 31%. *bout 7.8% of this

    group developed diabetes each year during the study period as compared with

    ++, of those in the placebo group

    Group C- 11% of this group developed diabetes every year.
