While diabetes may not be convenient, it is manageable.
Quick Tips for DiabeTes ManageMenT:
Goals of Blood Glucose Control• Fasting 70-110• 2 hours after meals 140 or less• A1C Less than 6.5%
Blood Glucose Monitoring (Norman Regional diabetes Center provides free glucose monitors for patients)
• Test your blood glucose in the morning before breakfast and 2 hours after a meal
• Alternate testing after a different meal each day• Record blood glucose levels in log book• Keep your test meter clean and out of extreme temperatures
Nutrition & Fitness • Read food labels, note serving size• Look for grams of “Total Carbohydrate” on label• “Rule of Thumb” is 45-60g carbohydrate per meal• Try to fill 1/2 of your plate with non-starchy vegetables, 1/4 with lean
cut meat and 1/4 with carb/starch (whole grain is best)• Increase water intake• Exercise, if you are cleared from your physician• Keep a food diary for 3 days
First of all, take a deep breath! being told that you have diabetes or that there is a problem with your blood sugar may create or increase your stress level. You may choose to be in denial, feel angry or guilty. This is all normal and okay. The key is to be gentle with yourself; you are your best resource for managing your diabetes.
While diabetes may not be convenient, it is manageable with gradual changes and a little team work from you and the experts. Remember, you are the most important team member. There is power in knowledge!

Diagnosis of DiabeTes:
• Fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dl*, and/or • Two hour plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dl* post 75g glucose challenge,
and/or random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dl* with symptoms of increased thirst, urination, or unexplained weight loss, and/or
• Hemoglobin A1C ≥6.5
