Instructor: Mercedes Silveira-Gouveia10 am – 1 pm : Children’s Studio : All Ages
This workshop will explain the history of world cultures that celebrate a Day of the Dead. Students will learnhow to build an altar and learn the meaning of the displays.Traditional Mexican elements such as cempasuchilflowers (paper marigolds) and papel picado (cut paper art) will be featured. In conjunction with this workshop,
Mercedes will build an altar collectively honoring the Hispanic railroad workers who helped build theCity of Tracy and a community altar. The public is invited to contribute mementos to the latter.

Get into the spirit of the season! Traditionally celebrated in Mexico since Pre-Colombian times, thecelebration has now spread to many parts of the world including Brazil and Spain. Participants will usespecial carving tools to create linocut designs with the Day of the Dead theme. Once the designs are cut,they can be used to create greeting cards, wall art, posters, and even decorative paper. All supplies will be
provided. No experience is necessary; however, students must be old enough and to handle lino-cutters safely.Students who finish early will learn to make papel picado—intricate paper cut designs with tissue paper

Make your own skeleton to hang up for Halloween or Day of the Dead!Students can also make small books to tell their skeletons’ stories.

6:30 – 8:30 pm : Visual Arts 2 : Ages 16 to Adult
Students can choose to make a skeleton with a book on its chest, or create a whole skeleton scene.C.J. will demonstrate how to make small skeletons out of wire and papier mâché, as well as how to make asmall box for a skeleton scene like those made in Mexico. Supplies will be provided, and students are
welcome to bring additional treasures to incorporate into this project.
