Luigi Paggi) and Mrs. Rekha Maria Boiragi. Founder Chief Executive It's my pleasure to publish the Annual Progress Report 2013 of DHRUBA where we can perceive the full descriptions of detailed activities that have been implemented in the year of 2013. In this report we have tried to narrate both success and failures we have achieved at the end of the year and the reasons why we could not achieve the targets. We are hopeful this Annual Report will provide you an initiative about DHRUBA, it's projects and programs, performances, strengths and aptitudes. It would never be possible achieving targets without the help and cooperation of our Governing Body and General Body Members. They extended their highest collaboration in planning, designing and implementation stages of the projects. I am grateful to them for their important supports. It's our staffs who are the key architects and implementers of the projects. They worked hard with full team spirit to materialize the projects under taken by DHRUBA during this period. I do highly appreciate their endeavor towards attaining the achievements. Donors always play an important role in supporting the projects financially. DHRUBA received full supports from the general members, government officials and a few well wishers and foreign donors. On behalf of the Governing Body and Staff, I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the local and home donors. Here I would like to add special thanks to the American Ngo SPEAK UP and our friend Mr. Troy Anderson who inspired us to go ahead to do with the Dalit Communities. We trust that they make important contributions to enhance constructively forward on this challenging the complicated issue of socio-economic development for the underprivileged Dalit Communities. May all those who read this report not only be liberal but also challenged and inspired to become catalysts for the development of the Dalit Communities. I convey thanks to all of our local and foreign friends for their cooperation and enthusiastic encouragements. DHRUBA at a Glance

Organizational Background

DHRUBA is a local non-governmental, non-profit, humanitarian and voluntary organization. It was established in January 2001 with the initiation of a group of educated young students as social workers with an aim to promote the socio-economic status of the rural poor and disadvantaged people specia lly the Dalit people emphasizing the women and children through education, human right concentration, capacity building, capital formation and imparting fundamental needs and right based programs. The organizations believes in non directive bottom up integrated and participatory development framework and works as a catalyst with the concerned people and aspire a judge-full and equitable shareable society where every individual could be able to live in peace, harmony and justice. It was founded by Mr. Uttam Das and Mrs. Rekha Maria Boiragi.

Since inception in 2001, DHRUBA has been working hard to eliminate poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition. It aims to assist the poorest sections of the community to ensure effective means of livelihood and social equity. DHRUBA works with a view to solving the social and economic problem among the target people who are asset-less, destitute and starving people of the country with a particulars emphasis of women and children.

DHRUBA aspires for a society where every individual will be able to live in an atmosphere of peace and harmony, i.e., free from human rights violation, exploitation, oppression and starvation where every individual will get equal and transparent shares of the resources belonging to this society. The basic approach of DHRUBA is to promote self-help and self­reliance.

Vision

To establish a society free from poverty, injustice and inequity, DHRUBA brings improvement, employment and awareness to the outcaste and disadvantaged Dalit communities in Bangladesh

As a non-govt. organization for the Dalit & underprivileged people, our mission is to create awareness and development through compassionate relationship of living and love.

Experience & Utilization of Donors' Fund DHRUBA has been working since 2001 to 2011 with the Own Fund contributed with the General Body, Executive Body and other well wishers. It's excellent news that DHRUBA is now working with an American Organization-SPEAK UP from 2012.

Institutional Capacity Assessment DHRUBA has a long year practical experience in both welfare and development activities. More than 500 members of DHRUBA are now aware about human rights and capacity building program and they are now capable to handle huge projects, too.

Case Study 1 : I want to be a Professor

I am Champa Das . Now I read in B.A Hons.in Sociology. My father Mrittujoy Das is a poor farmer. My mother Rekha Das is a home maker. I have been in DHRUBA GIRLS EDUCATION PROGRAM for

" over three years. We are four members in our family .We have no land of our own. My father works as a daily labor in others fields. My mother earns nothing because she takes care of our whole family alone. I have been wishing to be a Professor from a long since. Last year I made good result in my final exam .It is because the teachers make our lesson so interesting that we cannot help paying attention to them. I am staying at Khulna Girls' Hostel. I love to read and play with all my friends here. We all came from the different village .I indeed, love my center where I am getting nutritious food with my friends, enjoying and sharing with them. I like to play , listen to music. Here I have the opportunity to get lesson on learning English ,singing ,dancing and many other co curricular

Chapter 3 : Education Program Dhruba School Bari Girls Education Program (GEP)

Dhruba School Bari is the main focus of the education program in DHRUBA.This program is being run by DHRUBA own fund since the establishment of Dhruba School Bari in 2005. The main target is to educate the .disadvantaged dalit children in the society in Bangladesh. Basically DHRUBA believes that an educated society is the aware society where there will be the basic human rights resolution and more opportunity for the people in the society. For that reason, we have arranged 6 Dalit students awareness program where we have discussed the necessity of education and social injustice in the society and the rights enlistments dependency on education and there were present more about 300 students. GEP Program is running with a few schools as: pre-primary schools and tuition program at Tipna, Golna, Ranai, Khornia & Baduria village under Dumuria Upazilla, Panjia, Kaliaroy, Konakola village under Keshabpur Upazila and a few tu ition programs at Maguraghona, Gonali, under Dumuria Upazila where more than 75 students got help in 2013 from DHRUBA by the help of Speak Up.

Achievement: DHRUBA has established 9 pre­primary schools and 5 tuition program where 300 students are getting help with 75 sponsor girls.

Goal: DHRUBA has a plan to establish pre-primary school or tuition program with sponsor in every Dalit village.

Dhruba Learning Center (DLC)

Girls' Education Program(GEP): From different Dalit villages we have taken a few students who have no ability to put up with their educational expenses in the schools and

colleges. We have collected 75 girls from seven villages in Khulna and Jessore districts.

Achievement: DHRUBA made a survey and started 20 underprivileged girls in 2012 and 75

in 2013 from different Dalit villages.

Goal: DHRUBA has a plan to sponsor 150 Dalit girls in the year of 2014 and to establish good environment in every Dalit villages.

DHRUBA plans to take initiative actions to make the DLC for the underprivileged students who are studying in the schools and colleges. The main purpose of this small building is to arrange the

students and to make them aware about their position in the society and have a chance to be gathered in a nice small building

The goal of this program is to ensure educational facilities, water & sanitation support & others

to the poorest community as well as to raise awareness about Education in order to create

a better life in the society among the Dalit girls.

Project Objective: i) To ensure the Dalit girls about the educational environment

ii) To provide tuition facilities.

iii) To make people aware of the need to be united among the Dalit people and girls

iv) To enhance the capacities of the communities to make a habit for operation any gathering.

v) To promote effective and sustainable community based intuitional support system.

Goal: DHRUBA has a plan to establish 15 to 100 Dhruba Learning Center in 30 Dalit Villages in Jessore, Khulna and Satkhira Districts in 2015-16.

Chapter 4: Health Program Water and Sanitation Program Medical Camp

Water and sanitation related activities:

In our selected areas we have organized yard meeting where our volunteer workers discuss the necessity of pure water and the use of arsenic pollution in the areas. Especially the arsenic areas we have advocated about the use of rain water and pond water and how to purify the water in the localities. Moreover, we have served the villages the ring and slab for the Sanitary Latrines. In the year of 2013 DHRUBA helps more than SO latrines in the areas.

Achievement: DHRUBA helped minimum SO latrines among the villagers and made awareness them to keep fit.

Goal: DHRUBA has a plan to establish 1000 latrines in the Dalit Villages in Jessore, Khulna and Satkhira Districts.

Dhruba Medical Camp:

DHRUBA makes an arrangement a monthly medical camp in the rural areas. Every month we try to set in the school areas the medical camp for the babies and mother with own effort. One of our doctor f riend s hel ps to check up the babies and their mother and we supply minimum SO participants with medicine and prescriptions.

Achievement: DHRUBA helped more than SOO students from different Dalit villages with the medica l camp and made aware them about nutrition and health check up facilities.

Goal: DHRUBA has a plan to serve most of the Dalit villages with the monthly medical facilities so that they can be healthier and can get better chance to live comfortably.

Chapter 5: Human Right Program Human Rights and Good Governance Legal Aid Program

Human Rights Awareness Program:

Dhruba believes the classless society where all people of the society will enjoy the same rights. About 10 villages have been arranged under this program with the basic human rights and made them aware about the constitution of Bangladesh among the students. Already we are able to make a presence to our honorable DC in our human rights program where 200 people were present in the year of 2011.

Achievement: DHRUBA is able to gather 200 people for the world human rights day celebration and tried to send the message about our rights and responsibilities in the society.

Goal: DHRUBA thinks the people would be aware about basic human rights and prepare themselves as the power in the society and strengthen themselves.

Legal Aid Program

Dhruba believes the union with Students Awareness Program and able to make a unit with university students. For this reason DHRUBA formed an association with the Dalit students named: DUSAB (Dhruba Underprivileged Students' Association of Bangladesh). Dhruba arranges yard gathering. In the Dalit community Dhruba arranges different yard gathering among the women and children to make aware of their environment and educational build up.

Achievement: DHRUBA is able to make aware about the gender discrimination near about 500 women in various Dalit villages.

Goal: Ensuring the legal rights of the Dalit people specially the women, girls and chi ldren by providing legal aid service as they can protect oppression against women and girls and can establish their dignity in the society.

Chapter 6: Disaster Program Emergency Relief

Emergency Relief

Bangladesh is a developing country in the third world. Most of the people are now in the tremendous threat for the society, community, and also for Bangladesh. Though we have so many problems, natural disaster is one of them. Till now DHRUBA is not fully able to solve any problem, but we try our heart and soul to do something. DHRUBA goes beside the flood affected and tries to do something with own funding.

In the year of 2013 DHRUBA tries to provide emergency relief for the 10 villagers with own funding. When the sudden heavy rainfalls have occurred in those areas , DHRUBA reached their side and tries to aware them how to live and what to do them immediately. DHRUBA always believes that the relief does not make remedy but temporary solution and the family must live in the disaster prone area. DHRUBA tries to advocate for disaster management strategies throughout the community, provide sudden or temporary solution and reduce the vulnerability of the communities to natural hazards by raising awareness of coping strategies.

Achievement: DHRUBA gave 20 families 5 kg rice, 1 litre oil and a candle with our own effort.

Goal: To build reliance within communities, especially among the poor marginalized, and socially excluded, to withstand natural hazards with less loss of life and assets.

Chapter 7: Self- Reliance Program Handicraft, Jute Products & Sewing Program

Handicraft Program:

From the handicraft program Dhruba helped 25 villagers in Khalishpur and Sonadange areas and made five kinds of jute bags and different cards in embroidery. The disadvantaged women are able to know the way of earning and tried to be self employed. Moreover, DHRUBA believes empowerment of women in the poor community.

Achievement: DHRUBA trained up 15 women to learn a few items for handicraft and now they can make the selected items and can earn more than 100 taka per day. Now they can make the sown work, jute bags, colored cards and different items

Goal: Make a good factor to remove unemployment and to make economical solvency of women.

Case Study 2 : I want to be a Medical Assistant

I am Tonima Das . Now I read in B.A Hons.in Economics. My father Bimal Chandra Das is a poor farmer . My mother Shindu Rani Das is a home maker. I have been in DHRUBA GIRLS EDUCATION PROGRAM for over four years. We are five members in our family .We have no land of our own. My father works as a daily labor in others fields. My mother cooks for our family . I have been wishing to be a Doctor from a long since . Last year I made good result in my final exam and I got the chance to study in Medical Assistant Training School in Khulna Mats School. I am staying at Khulna Girls' Hostel. I love to read and play with all my friends here. We all came from the different village .I indeed; love my center where I am staying now and I love our Hostel In Charge. This is the perfect surrounding that I used to relish from a long time and previously it was beyond my imagination .It assists me to grow up both physically and mentally. I like to play ,listen to music .Here I have the opportunity to get lesson on drawing ,singing ,learning English and Computers and many other co curricular activities . After completing my course, I will help the poor and sick people in the poorest Dalit Community and others and serve them free medical treatment.

Chapter 8: Environment Program Bondhu Chula (Carbon Stoves) Tree Plantation Anti-tobacco Law Enforcing Program

Dhruba started to set up carbon stoves:

Dhruba starts to set up carbon stoves with the partnership with a local ngo. Already we have been able to set up more than 100 carbon stoves in the area of Khalishpur under Khulna district.

Achievement: DHRUBA has implemented more than 75 carbon stoves in Khalishpur areas to reduce the green house effect and to share about the campaign of global climate change,

Goal: The main task of the project is to reduce the green house effect from the global warming.

Anti-tobacco Law Enforcing Program

Tree Plantation:

Dhruba organized two villagers to supply trees specially the Palm Oil trees among the underprivileged people who have a small house and who can plant those trees. The Palm Oil plant can help the children in many ways so we have decided to help them with those among 125 villagers.

Achievement: Every year DHRUBA provides more than 250 trees in the rural villages for tree plantation campaign and to make aware about the uses of trees in our lives

Goal: DHRUBA made a survey and found 20 underprivileged girls from 149 girls from different Dalit villages.

Dhruba organized more than 6 taskforce meeting and a few procession about the anti-tobacco law enforcing program under the Teorkhada Upazilla with different people. Specially the GO Officers and the NGO leaders sat together and discussed how to stop the smoking in

, open spaces especially under the crowed people on the road and shops and different offices. Dhruba made a large signboard at the center of Upazilla.

Achievement: About 25% people in the Upazilla are able to understand the effect of smoking and 50% people understood about he bad use of smoking .

Goal: DHRUBA made a plan to make aware Terokhada Upazilla about the law ofTobacco within 2015.

AUDITORS' REPORT

We have audited the accompanying Balance Sheet of "Girls Education Program" of DHRUBA of Dhrubaloy, 2 No. Navy-Gate, Khalishpur, Khulna-9000, Bangladesh as at December 31 , 2013 and the related Income and Expenditure Account and Receipts and Payments Account for the year ended on that date along with the books of account, vouchers and other relevant documents as were maintained and produced to us by the management. The preparation of these financial statements is the responsibility of the management of DHRUBA. Our responsibility is to express an independent opinion on these financial statements based on our audit.

Basis of Audit We conducted our audit in accordan~e with Bangladesh Standards on Auditing (BSA). Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining on test basis evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion.

Opinion: In our opinion, the above mentioned financial statements, in all material respect, present a true and fair view of the financial position of the "Girls Education Program" of DHRUBA as at December 31, 2013 and of the results of its operation for the year ended on that date.

We also report that We have obtained all the information and explanations which to the best of our knowledge and belief were necessary for the purposes of our audit and we have made due verification thereof;

In our opinion, proper books of account, in generally accepted manner, have been kept on DHRUBA, so far as it appeared from our examination of those books;

The financial statements dealt with by this report are in agreement with the books of account.
