Mission

To effectively dewater wet CBM wells (lower pump failurefrequency and intervention cost) in spite of challenges.

Challenges

• Varied Liquid Production Volume

– High Initial Liquid Rate

• Solids

– Coal fines and Frac Sand flow back

• Wellbore Profile

– Deviated, S-shaped, Horizontal and Multi-Lateral

• Gas Interference Problems

• Rodless Application

– No Rod issues: “sometimes we have to get rid of the rodstring”

Challenges

• High rig costs

– Rigless Intervention

• Sitting below the perfs

– There may be no rathole

• Handling CO2 & Paraffin

• Low Land Visibility

– Aesthetics - Low Profile Point

Basic Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP)

• Is a positive displacement pump

• Uses progressing sealed cavities to move fluids

• Two main components– Single Helix Rotor (usually hard-chromed)

– Double Helix Stator (usually molded elastomer in a steelhousing)

• PCP benefits include– High system efficiency

– Low power consumption

– Pumps sand, viscous, or gaseous fluids

– Relatively low surface equipment profile

VSD – AL Monitoring & Optimization

• Pumping equipment operates at a constant speed without aVSD.

• Pumping Speed most often doesn’t match up with ReservoirInflow

• VSD - Essential & Extremely Important ( “No longer aLuxury”)

Page 11: Dewatering WET CBM – San Juan ESP,PCP & Downhole Data Field Trialalrdc.com/workshops/2010_2010GasWellWorkshop/Priv… ·  · 2012-11-20Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Sheraton

11

Artificial Lift Monitoring & Optimization

• Downhole data in combination with VSD optimizesproduction & protects equipment

• It provides information that aids in proper understanding ofAL conditions

– Reservoir flow is typically not in steady state

– Usually Erratic (wave of fluid (gas & liquid) and sometimes solids)

• Operation Philosophy: Maintain constant Pwf (fluid level) byletting the VSD speed up and down as required within Min &Max frequency range

Jean Gas Unit 21 13 #1

Converted from HDESP to ESPCP-TTC in 2008

Milestone & Uniqueness of Jean 21 13 #1 well

• The first 2 7/8” TTC deployment in the world

– Prior to the Jean, deployment has been in the bigger 3 ½”tubing. (Low water rate & 5 ½” casing drove thedevelopment of 2 7/8” deployed PCP.)

• Cut Slickline deployment from 3 runs to 1 run.

• New mechanical lock

Jean Gas Unit 21 13 #1

Milestone & Uniqueness of Jean 21 13 #1 well

• VSD set on Pressure control using downhole sensor• Downhole sensors provide:

– Pump Intake Pressure & Temperature, Pump DischargePressure, Motor Temperature, System vibration

– Information delivered to Desktop via realtime data stream• Properly interpreted data enable us to be more proactive

rather than reactionary

Le Platt Gas Unit #1

• The very first field trial well installed in November, 2005

• ESPCP-TTC : PC Pump deployed in 3 ½” Tubing onSlickline with 3 runs

• Ran for 907 days

• Failure Cause – Human Error led to Downhole Motor Failure

• Back on Production and Monitoring (9/1/08)

Mc Caw D1

• It has been on Artificial Lift since 1991

• Had history of Tubing Leaks

• Installed ESPCP in 2006, Not too successful

– Unable to drawdown fluid level

– Required more HP

• After Refrac – Installed ESP with downhole desander in 2008

• Monitored draw down with pressure control set point

– Running well!

Lessons Learned

• Need for Sufficient HP for ESPCP

– No more ESPCP: Only ESPCP-TTC & ESP

• Adequate Monitoring and Optimization –key tosuccessful application

• Note: We performed Slickline pulls successful(except One)

Page 26: Dewatering WET CBM – San Juan ESP,PCP & Downhole Data Field Trialalrdc.com/workshops/2010_2010GasWellWorkshop/Priv… ·  · 2012-11-20Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Sheraton

Value

• Reduce Intervention Cost (In 2008, there were > 25 RigPCP repairs, some without a need for a clean-out job)

• By annually switching 20 rig intervention PCP repairs($92,250 Average) to Rigless PCP repairs ($15,000Average), savings of $1,545, 000/year. Better wellworkefficiency

• Reduce production losses (reduction in mean timebetween pump failure and pump change) – This will helpget wells back on production earlier than we are currentlydoing

• Increase run life (reduce failure mechanism associatedwith rods)
