SOLID SCRIVENS STYMIES DEVILS, 4-2

Reading, PA – Despite falling behind 1-0 and being out-shot 52-25, the Reading Royals used four goals spaced 13:28 apart to defeat the Trenton Devils, 4-2, Friday at Sovereign Center.

Reading goalie Ben Scrivens was the game’s first star, with 50 saves on 52 shots, after the Spruce Grove, Alberta native was sent down by the AHL-Toronto Marlies earlier in the day. Jared Ross and Yannick Riendeau contributed a goal and assist each, with the Royals becoming the first ECHL team to break the 60-point mark by improving

their record to 28-11-2-3.Trevor Kell tallied his second two-point game (1g, 1a) in his last three

contests, but the Devils lost their third straight and dropped to 15-24-1-3. Jeff Lerg took the loss after making 21 saves. Lerg’s record now stands at 6-5-0. Dave Leaderer assisted on Kell’s goal, his sixth assist in the last six games and his 22 points is fourth most on the team.

Despite being doubled up on the scoreboard, the Devils controlled the tempo for most of the night. The Devils took the game’s first lead, too, when Trevor Kell beat Scrivens to the high glove side with a quick wrist shot, less than five minutes after the opening puck drop. Kell put himself in excellent shooting position by faking out Scrivens with a quick stutter-step at the left-wing circle, after the Devils captain had gained possession in the neutral zone.

Even though the Devils dominated possession of the puck and held a 23-9 shots advantage in the first period, Casey Haines scored at 16:07 to lock the teams in a dead heat after 20 minutes.

Yannick Riendeau gave the Royals a lead they never relinquished, beating Lerg on a breakaway fake, 1:03 into the second period. Jared Ross and Chris Blight scored to extend Reading’s lead to 4-1 after two periods, despite a 41-14 Trenton shot advantage.

The Devils thinned Reading’s lead to 4-2, 4:29 into the third period, when Jeff Prough scored his fifth goal in the last four games by deflecting a point-shot by Justin Pender past Scrivens. Trevor Kell notched the secondary assist in his first game back from a three-game stint on injured reserve. Although Trenton continued to pepper Scrivens by launching 16 of its 52 shots in the third period, the former Cornell University goaltender held the Devils at bay, as Reading won 4-2.

With the Royals holding a 5-3 lead in the season series, Trenton and Reading will face off each of the next two days at Sun National Bank Center. The puck drops Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Reading’s Ben Scrivens made 50 saves against Trenton Friday.

Defenseman Andy Thomas was called up to AHL-Albany for the second time this season Friday, joining the team in Atlantic City for Friday’s game vs. Hershey. Andy did not factor in the scoring, but logges significant ice time in his second game with Albany this year. In his career with Trenton, Thomas has played 106 games, compiling 27 points (5g, 22a) at the ECHL level.

Joining the Devils organization for the 2009-10 season, Thomas appeared in 71 of 72 games for Trenton a year ago; the only game he missed was the result of a one-game callup to the AHL when the Lowell Devils faced the Hartford Wolfpack at Prudential Center in Newark.

A defense-first defenseman cut from the mold of a traditional New Jersey Devils blueliner, the former University of Denver standout stands 6’2, weighs 220-lbs. and led the ‘09-10 Trenton Devils with a plus-16 rating. The Bow, New Hampshire native has also been one of Trenton’s leaders, often wearing the alternate letter ‘A’ on his sweater.

Thomas and the Albany Devils host first-place Manchester tonight at the Times Union Center, before returninc to Atlantic City Monday to battle the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

ANDY TO ALBANY

The Devils welcomed the return of forward Matt Vokes to the lineup last night in Reading. Friday was the first time Vokes had played in a game since December 17, with the Auburn, Mass. native having been limited to just eight games this season due to nagging injuries. But despite his absence, Vokes always seems to pick up right where he left off when returning to the lineup.

Vokes has been better than a point-per-game player with Trenton over the last two seasons. He has nine points (3g, 6a) in eight games this season, after he amassed 53 points (20g, 33a) in 52 games last season. Vokes’ 33 assists last season as a rookie led Trenton, despite him not missing 20 games to start the year because of injury. Vokes’ production with Trenton is a continuation of his college career, as Vokes led Brown University (ECAC) with 28 points (11g, 17a) during his senior season in 2008-09. Vokes led the Bears after his current Trenton teammate, Jeff Prough, had led Brown in scoring the prior two years.

VOKES RETURNS... AGAIN

The Royals have a record of 28-11-2-3, and became the first ECHL team to surpass the 60-point marker with last night’s win. They sit in first place in the Atlantic Division, first place in the Eastern Conference, and would have home-ice advantage throughout the Kelly Cup Playoffs if the season ended today.

Besides for a 1-4 hiccup to start the season, Reading has been one of the league’s best teams all year. And after the Royals moved ahead of the Elmira Jackals for first place in the division in November, Reading has done nothing but widen the point gap between itself and

Elmira and Trenton.Reading has been nearly unstoppable against any opponent it runs

up against. The Royals are 11-6-0-1 in inner-division games, and have gone 17-5-2-2 against other divisions.

Although Reading is an average defensive team (ninth in the ECHL), its ability to bury opponents is a major reason the Royals have won four straight games, and are 5-0-0-2 in their last seven . This season, Reading is 13-1-1-1 when leading after the first period, and a remarkable 18-1-1-1 when leading after two.

The Devils continue their three-game weekend by hosting the Reading Royals at Sun National Bank Center at 7:00 p.m. It’s the first of four consecutive home games for Trenton, after playing the last five games away from the friendly confines of SunCenter.

Saturday’s game comes less than 24 hours after Reading defeated Trenton, 4-2, at Sovereign Center in Pennsylvania, the fifth victory for the Royals over the Devils in eight contests this season. The division foes face off a total of 16 times this year, following a 14-game season series in 2009-10 in which the Royals won 11 times, including the first eight in a row.

The Devils have Trevor Kell and Matt Vokes available Saturday - both return from IR Friday. Trenton is without defenseman Andy Thomas for the second straight game; the second-year Devil was recalled to Albany Friday. Goalie Dave Caruso also remains with the Devils’ AHL affiliate.

For Wheeling, a transaction-filled week continues today with the loan of leading-scorer Ben Gordon to AHL-Rochester today, the loan of forward Casey Haines to AHL-Lake Erie, and the return of forward Rich Greenop from AHL-Toronto. On Friday, the Royals lost goalie Daren Machesney to AHL-Worcester but gained Friday’s winning goalie, Ben Scrivens, from AHL-Toronto. John Scrymgeour also returned from bereavement leave. NJ Devil and Scorch headline Saturday’s Mascot Mania at Sun National Bank Center.

Trenton Devils players visited the Quaker Bridge Mall Build-A-Bear Workshop® Tuesday to make their own furry friends to be auctioned off for charity. This year marks the sixth straight season that Trenton has teamed up with Build-A-Bear Workshop®.

At left, Matt Vokes and Scorch display their cuddly creations. Each Devils player created a unique critter, complete with outfits, accessories, and birth certificates.

The animals will be auctioned off on Saturday, February 19 and Sunday, February 20 when the Devils host the Elmira Jackals at 7 p.m. and the Wheeling Nailers at 4 p.m., respectively at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ. The silent auction will begin when doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude at the end of the second intermission during Sunday’s game.

All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area, which was founded in July 1986 with the mission of building affordable, quality homes in the East Trenton area. With the help of thousands of volunteers Habitat-Trenton has built over 80 new homes in Trenton.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS* The Royals are in first place of the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic

Division, with a record of 28-11-2-3. The Royals are 5-0-0-2 in their last seven, and come to town with a 15-6-1-1 record on the road.

* Reading has the third highest scoring offense in the league, with 152 goals scored in 44 games (3.45 per game). Reading’s defense ranks ninth, with 132 goals-against (3.00 per game). At even strength, Reading is plus-27, scoring 112 and giving up 85.

* Reading will be without its two leading scorers tonight, as Ben Gordon and Ryan Cruthers were both called up to the AHL this week. Chris Blight becomes Reading’s active leading scorer with nine goals and 20 assists in just 22 games this season.

* The Royals have ridden three goalies this season, all of whom have found success. Ben Scrivens boosted his record to 9-3-0 by making 50 saves in Friday’s win against Trenton. But with Scrivens spending recent weeks in the AHL, Michael Hutchinson has started most frequently in the last month. Hutchinson has an overall record of 7-2-4-1, with a 2.87 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. Reading’s wins leader is still Matt Dalton, who is 11-6-1 in 18 starts. Scrivens and Hutchinson are expected to be the goalies for Reading tonight, though, as Dalton was called up to the AHL’s Providence Bruins on December 29 and Daren Machesney was loaned to AHL-Worcester Friday.

* Reading’s special teams have been hit-and-miss all season. Reading’s PP is 13th in the ECHL at 17.2%, after going 1-of-4 last night. Reading’s PK is slightly better at 11th best (81.9%), but gave up a goal in five times shorthanded last night against the Devils.

SCOUTING THE DEVILS* The Devils take the ice Saturday with a record of 15-24-1-3, having

gone 2-7-1-0 in their last 10 games.* Trenton’s 23 shots in the first period Friday equaled a season high.* Trenton’s offense is ninth best in the ECHL. The Devils’ 137 goals

scored in 43 games gives them an average of 3.19 per game. The Devils’ defense is tied for last in the league with the Toledo Walleye, relinquishing 161 goals in 43 games (3.74 per game). At even strength, the Devils are minus-21, scoring 92 and allowing 113.

*With 45 points (17g, 28a) in 42 games this season, Ryan Ginand leads the Devils in points, and is tied for eighth in the league. With five goals in the last week, Jeff Prough has surpassed Ginand for the team lead with 18 tallies.

* Defenseman Dave Leaderer has registered six assists in the last six games and has 22 points on the season, surpassing J.S. Berube for fourth most points on the team and is tied for 14th in scoring among ECHL defensemen.

* Since coming off of IR in January, Jeff Lerg started the majority of Trenton’s games. Lerg is 6-6, with a 3.38 goals-against average and .890 save percentage this season. Trenton’s other goalie is Shane Connelly, who has a 1-7-2 record in 11 games with Trenton. Due to injuries and a stint with AHL-Albany, Dave Caruso hasn’t played for Trenton since January 9 at South Carolina.

* The Devils power play has scored in eight of the last nine games, and is eighth in the league at 17.9%. Trenton’s PK hasn’t been as strong, with its 80.3% efficiency only good enough for 16th in the league.
