EVENTS The JMG Security Systems Golf

It was a sell-out of BOTH
courses at MileSquare Golf
Course and we are excited to
have one of the most successful
tournaments we’ve had in a few
years!
Next up is Chili at the Beach

As always, we continue to
work toward our Annual Benefit
Dinner & Auction. The 2012
theme is “Great Futures Start
Here.” We are pleased to
announce that CJ Wilson,
Angels newly recruited lefty
pitcher will be honored at our
event. He is truly a testament of
our Great Futures theme. To
date nearly $143,000 is
committed for table sales and
cash donations, working towards
our goal of $228,000. Thanks
for all you’ve done to get these
commitments and we appreciate
your continued hard work! We
have a good start on auction
items, but a long way to go over
the next five months. We have
items valued at about $25,000
now. Typically, by auction night,
the total value of all auction
items is $140,000-$150,000.
So, please keep working your
contacts and getting those
auction items donated.
The ImageMakers regional
competition was held in our
Kingston Branch gym on
Monday, April 30th, with an
open house on the afternoon of
Sunday, April 29th. We were
thrilled to discover that three
kids from our Kingston Branch
were among the 20 winners who
will advance to the national
competition. The judges got to
meet them right away and
enjoyed talking photography
with the kids. The winners will
be featured in an upcoming
article in Fountain Valley Living
Magazine. (Winning Kingston
Branch photos and essay are
featured on the back of this
report.)
GRANTS
Last month we submitted
proposals to the Angels
Baseball Foundation (Twilight),
the Klein Family Foundation
(Twilight), Marshall Fund
(ClubHouse Theatre) and
Hyundai (computers),. Reports
were submitted for our OJP
grant, our OCTA grant and the
Marshall Fund. We received
payments from OJP, OCTA and
the City of Fountain Valley
totaling about $12,000.
MARKETING We sent our first electronic
version of our print newsletter to
more than 5,000 parents and
donors. This will become
standard practice for each
quarterly newsletter. Fountain
Valley Living Magazine helped
promote the golf tournament and
the Image Makers contest.
Orange County Register printed
an article about the Image
Makers contest
OTHER ACTIVITIES Laura came in from Iowa for a
visit to the Club and to
participate in the Boys &Girls
Clubs of America national
conference in San Diego. All
three development staff
members were able to attend
the conference. It was a good
experience for the team to
spend some time together and
to get some fresh ideas and
inspiration at the conference.
We were accepted into the
Combined Federal Campaign
(government version of United
Way) turned in our staff’s United
Way campaign pledges. The
staff committed more than
$5,000 to United Way this year.
This is the most raised in the
last few years and many of
those pledges are designated
for BGCHV. The Club will have
a team in United Way’s“Walk
United” event at Angels Stadium
on June 9th. If can support the
team or join as a walker, visit

Development & Special Events - How we raise the money! JMG Golf Tournament
Kingston Branch, Fountain Valley May 2012 Page 2
We started out the month of
April by celebrating Boys & Girls
Clubs of America Week. We had
different theme days –True Blue
Monday, Pajama Day, Crazy
Sock Day, and we ended the
week with a Bang! Our club kids
worked very hard making rockets
all week long, and on Friday we
helped the kids launch their
rockets outside. Our members
also participated in a Team
Dodgeball Tournament, built a
BGC city out of Legos, created
membership cards, and helped
create a BGCHV Mascot out of
clay!
Go Green with the Kingston
Branch! We had a fun filled week
last month celebrating Earth Day.
Our club kids learned about the
importance of recycling and
reusing. They had fun learning
how take trash and transform it
into something new they could
reuse. Our Club Members helped
out by planting new flowers out
on the playground and helped
create a bigger club garden! Our
teens even collected cardboard
boxes, old newspapers, and
plastic bottles, creating a new
clothing line called “Teens Go
Green.” They showed off their
new look with an Earth Day
Fashion Show for all of club kids
to see!
Learning Center Child Development Preschool, FV Another busy month for the
children and staff, we started the
month by celebrat ing the
Teacher’s Appreciation Week
from May 7-11. The teachers
were very happy for all the
recognition that they received
from the parents.
On Friday May 11, the parents
provided lunch for all the staff and
we had food leftover for the rest
of the week. Children were busy
preparing gifts and cards for
Mother’s Day.
On Friday, May 18, the Family
Support Network, for the sixth
year, provided free screening for
the children at the Learning
Center and the community. They
screened for seven different
areas, such as speech, hearing,
vision, dental, mental health,
occupational therapy, and
physical development.
The teachers have also been
working hard filling out the DRDP
evaluation tool for the parent
conference that will take place
during the week of May 21-25.
Our enrollment is staying strong
as we look forward to our first
summer in our new home.
Page 3 CJ Wilson AGREES to be Honorary Chair The Club is very pleased to
announce that the new Angels’
pitcher, CJ Wilson and Club
Alumnus has agreed to be named
as the Honorary Chair of our
2012 Annual Dinner and Auction.
The event theme, “Great Futures
Start Here” says it all when you
think of the journey CJ has taken
from a Club kid that loved sports
to where he is today.
Attending the event is up in the
air because the Angels may be in
post season. Of course, the Club
hopes that will happen, but if it
does, CJ has promised to provide
the Club with a video we can play
that evening. If CJ is in town,
then he will personally deliver the
words to the crowd.
The Club is proud to be
associated with CJ and has
plans to continue the relationship
with a special event to be
announced in 2013 designed to
support our Building Dreams
capital campaign.
A special thank you to Mike
Haynes for connecting the Club
to CJ and for his continued efforts
to build the relationship. Way to
go Mike!
ClubHouse Academy, Huntington Beach The month of May has been
great fun for the ClubHouse
Academy. It started with the
audition workshop held the first
Saturday of the month. This
time around we had 25 young
actors come in and work with
our instructors to learn the tricks
of the trade when it comes to
auditioning. They were able to
work on dance numbers,
choosing the right song to sing,
and learning how to read lines
with little preparation.
The following week, the
auditions were held for “The
Lady Pirates of Captain Bree,”
and the ClubHouse Theatre
reached a new milestone in the
acting program: with 136 total
kids, there are now six casts, the
most that the club has had yet!
The dance program has also
been very active this month.
Over 160 of our dancers had
been practicing for the past 2
months preparing for our spring
dance recital, working up to this
past Sunday’s recital. The stage
was set and the Kingston gym
hosted 750 friends and family to
watch the two shows. It was
great to see the gym filled to
capacity with folks happy to
watch the spectacle of six
genres of dance and over 30
unique performances. After the
show, the families gathered on
our playground to take pictures
and congratulate the dancers.
The sports leagues are rapidly
approaching the end of the
season. The end of the May will
begin the first round of playoffs
and will conclude the first week
of June and we will quickly turn
around to get ready for the
summer season.

Child Development Preschool, HB April ended with a terrific
carnival to celebrate Week of
the Young Child. Our center
received a lovely plaque from
the county of Orange in
recognition of our efforts in
celebrating Week of the Young
Child and for teachers and
others who make a difference in
the lives of young children.
The month of May bloomed
w i t h a p p r e c i a t i o n a n d
recognition! On May 7-11 we
had fun celebrating Teacher
Appreciation Week, each day
staff members were recognized
by parents, children and
administration for their hard
work and dedicated efforts they
put forth daily in working with
our children. Small thoughtful
gifts such as handpicked flowers
from parent’s gardens, the
children writing thank you notes,
and a potluck lunch made the
staff feel good about what they
do!
The weeks of May 14th and May
21st we held our second set of
parent/teacher conferences.
Staff worked hard on completing
the DRDP assessments and
putting together a portfolio for
each child. Portfolios represent
documentation of a child’s
progress in specific criteria
throughout the year; this is shown
through art work, writing samples,
pictures and dictations. It is so
nice to see the leaps of growth in
all the children that are about to
complete this school year.
Curriculum this month included
finishing up the alphabet letter of
the week, working on letter
sounds and starting word
families. Word families consist of
a few consistent letters when put
together with a new beginning
letter it makes a word, example
“at” can be paired with “c” to
make “cat.”
Many c lassrooms made
something special to celebrate
Mother’s Day. Children
answered questions about their
mom’s to create poems, some
classrooms made handprint
flowers, and others used their
imag ina t ion and crea ted
homemade cards.

Over the last month we have
gone through some changes at
our club. Devon Putman, who
h a s w o r k e d w i t h t h e
organization for two years, has
moved up to Los Angles to a
different career. We
would like to thank
Devon for her hard
work and dedication
to our organization as
well as wish her the
best of luck in her
future.
Taking Devon’s
position is Kristal
Stewart. Kristal has
come to us with a
wealth of experience
in many areas of
recreation. We look
forward to her
development and growth and
her contributions to our
program.
Thank you to everyone involved
in sending us to the National
Conference. This year was the
best set of speakers that I have
ever seen. Their topics and
speaking points were perfectly
matched to our organizational
mission. I really appreciate the
ongoing support for my personal
development and growth to be
the best staff I can be.
During spring break we had a
huge Easter Egg Hunt. The kids
went crazy for the eggs and the
fun culminated with an egg drop
from the roof of our building. The
children had an absolute blast.
That’s all for now!
Boys & Girls Club programs expand learning opportunities for the kids in our community. Club programs COMPLEMENT, RATHER THAN DUPLICATE, regular school day activities.
Boys & Girls Club programs focus on strong outcomes, are cost effective and promote student engagement. (Fueled by Club activities kids get involved, go to school and learn to give back to their community.)
*Study reports Impressive Economic Impact! $1 $16.48
For every $1 spent by the Clubs, Boys & Girls Clubs in California generate $16.18 of positive economic impact in the state. This remendous rate of return is a testament to the vital role the Clubs play in shaping the lives and futures of Club members and their parents. Beyond the value of social services provided, Clubs stimulate the economy through their budgetary expenditures and volunteer programs. Just like private for‐profit businesses, Boys & Girls Clubs spend money on payroll, supplies, and equipment thereby helping to stimulate the economy. Volunteers further this capacity through a donation of labor that has similar productive qualities as a monetary donation.
