Development of the Periodic Table
Understanding the Periodic Table Student Pages for Interactive Notebooks
Purpose
The purpose of this station is to understand the structure of the Periodic Table and the arrangement of
elements. You will also identify the trends that present due to the arrangement of the elements on the
Periodic Table.
Before you Begin…
Check to see that all the items are present and organized according to the Station Information Sheet. If
you notice a problem, notify the teacher immediately.

Essential Questions
When Mendeleev arranged the elements into a chart he used similar chemical and physical properties.
How does the modern Periodic Table demonstrate the law of periodicity? If you were to organize a
group of compounds, how would you use these principles to develop a chart?
Discuss the essential questions with your teammate(s) and record your answer in your Interactive
Notebook.
Using the provided charts, correctly label the following using the provided labels and arrows. Cut out the
provided periodic table and glue into your interactive notebook. Sketch your results in your Interactive
Notebook.

9. Explain the property of the atoms in a given row and column that causes the trend in electronegativity.
10. List the 7 diatomic elements.
11. Now that you have completed these questions, return to the essential question. How would you modify
or change your answer?
Periodic Table Challenge
Use the following periodic trend clues to place the elements in their proper places in the short form of the
periodic table provided. Use the Periodic Table Challenge card and the letters in the Periodic Table Challenge
envelope or use a Vis-à-vis marker to write the letters in the proper place. Make sure you erase all marks from
the chart when you have completed the activity. Glue the Periodic Table Challenge page cut out earlier into
your interactive Notebook. Record your data in your Interactive Notebook.
