INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT MOTIVATION
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 3
Introduction
• Shear-wave velocity (VS) is widely recognized as a critical parameter for ground motion and ground failure studies
• Applications include:
– Geotechnical: 1D ground response analyses; liquefaction
– Seismological: Nonlinear seismic crustal models (e.g., SCEC Community [Crustal] Velocity Model Geotechnical Layer)
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 4
Project Motivation
Goal: Develop open-access shear-wave velocity profile database for the United States.
Why?
• Many VS profiles have been measured in the US…
… but there is no medium for data access, visualization, andanalysis
• Many other countries have such a resource (Japan, Taiwan, Greece, Canterbury NZ, …)
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 5
Focus: California
DATA TYPES AND DATA SOURCES
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 6
Data Types
• Minimum criteria: any site with VS profile measured from a credible geophysical method with known geodetic coordinates.
– Include dispersion curves for surface-wave measurements
– Exclude: correlations to penetration resistance and lab-measured VS
• Optional data/metadata include:
– Co-located VP profiles, boring logs, SPT/CPT measurements, HVSR
– Others: elevation, slope, geology, site plans, ....
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 7
Data Types
• Geophysical methods include:
– Invasive: down-/cross-hole, P-S suspension logging, seismic CPT
– Non-invasive: SASW, MASW, MAM, P- and S-wave seismic refraction
• Exclude ReMiTM (for now) and CXW methods
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 8
Data Sources
• Federal Agencies: USGS Open File Reports, including VS30 and CPT databases; USACE Dam sites
• Network for Earthquake Engineering and Simulation (NEES); Resolution of Site Response Issues in the Northridge Earthquake (ROSRINE)
• California State Agencies: Dept. Water Resources levees; Division of Dam Safety; Caltrans bridges; CA Geological Survey: hospitals (OSHPD) and schools
Sean Ahdi – SCEC Workshop on Nonlinear Shallow Crust Effects – 9/9/2017 9
Data Sources
• UCLA Research reports: 100+ sites, 1971 Sylmar EQ
• Woodward-Lundgren & Associates reports (1973): 78 sites
• Law-Crandall (AMEC-FW): 363 sites in L.A.; proprietary data
• Other potential sources: utilities, private industry
