City to have a boat club by next yearTNN May 25, 2013, 02.24AM IST
KANPUR: The dream of a boat club in the river Ganga that the city dreamt two years ago on
June 21, has now turned into reality.
According to Neeraj Srivastava coordinator of a high power technical committee, the idea of
a boat club and river sports was generated in the year 2005 after the former Chief Minister
Mulayam Singh Yadav inaugurated the Ganga Barrage. Due to poor response from the state
government it could not take shape then. However, recently a team of experts consisting of
Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association's V S Kushwaha and Colonel V S Negi visited the
site and opined it as an ideal place for river sports and boat club.
Neeraj stated that in the first phase construction of VIP ghat, floating jetty, and an approach
road would be constructed while in second phase boat shed, office, gloss box, kayaks for one
to four passengers, and canoeing boats, speed and motor boats, sail boats would be
arranged for the club. Adequate security measures would also be arranged for the club.
Apart from this a national level coaching centre would also be established in the third phase
of the project where kids of boatmen and swimmers would be coached by the national level
coaches. Neeraj expressed his hope that the boat club would come into existence by the next
year.
The district administration has already decided to develop the barrage as a tourist spot.
The construction work at VIP ghat at Ganga barrage has started and work for barrage from
Lucknow via Unnao road is gearing up. The public works department (PWD) is levelling the
road site area and it is expected that laying of 3.5 kilometer long road at the barrage site
would be completed by June 10, 2013. Thereafter, the irrigation department would start its
work, said sources.TNN
