Dear Parents/Guardians, Remembrance Day

Once again, I was so proud of all our students as they respectfully commemorated Remembrance Day last Monday. Some of our school leaders led the students through an assembly that outlined aspects of the meaning of Remembrance Day and a strong recognition of the service personnel who have served in the past, and are currently serving now, to ensure we maintain our wonderful living conditions in Australia.

As this was happening on Monday, two of our School Captains and our Merrigan House Captains attended the Hampton Park Progress Association commemoration service at the Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park. Below is a recount of the day from Kye Gardner – Merrigan House Captain

On Remembrance Day two School Captains (Casey Lumm and Raveen Wijjarupage) and the Merrigan House Captains (Ella Larche and myself), went to the Arthur Wren Hall to participate in the Hampton Park Association Remembrance Day. I was lucky enough to sit on a table with the Merrigan family and Anthony Burn (Federal Member of Parliament for our area). At 12 o’clock Ella and I, got up to say a speech about what leadership means. We both did our speeches even the Merrigan family said that they were amazing

and the best. Whilst lunch was on, I was on the table with the Merrigans and Anthony Burn and the Merrigan’s were having conversations with me about who Merrigan was. He was a footy player who played at Hampton Park but was drafted

by Fitzroy Lions which merged with Brisbane Bears which became Brisbane Lions. Not long after lunch our school was awarded a Bear in war which is now located in the Library and we were also awarded $300 for our breakfast club. All the students had a great time and thank you to the Hampton Park Association for running this great day.

Thank you everyone! Today (Wednesday) Gayathri from Hampton Park Woolworths came to present our students the prizes from the Earn and Learn program that was recently run. Due to the number of tokens YOU brought back, we have received three boxes of games, toys and other equipment that you will be able to use at school.

There were 15736 schools involved this year and 150 remote schools that do not have Woolworth stores also received equipment through bins in other more central stores. Four of our Year Five House Vice Captains represented you all in accepting these from Gayathri. Well done for collecting so many tokens and I hope you enjoy the equipment when it is distributed. World Teachers Day was celebrated in Australia on 25th October. As a part of this celebration, the

students of 4C & 4D were given the opportunity to experience the complexities involved in teaching.

In small groups, the students had to create a maths or literacy lesson which met the standard of the

Year 4 Victorian Curriculum. The groups spent time planning the lesson, working out how long

each part of the lesson would take, what role each group member would have, creating digital and

other resources, correcting completed work and managing classroom behaviour.

Zeba—4D I think that being a teacher was a good chance to be more confident

Rohan—4D It was easy to teach because the students were listening but it was hard to get them to complete the work quietly

Khush—4D My experience as a teacher was good because it was fun

Zohaib—4D I think it was fun and easy because people listened

Freshta—4C I think it was hard to get the people to settle down and be quiet. Overall it was easy

Ishana—4D It was hard to make people hear what we were saying

Jasper—4D It was scary because I’m not used to talking in front of lots of people

Anzelia—4D It was hard to get everyone’s attention when they were talking

Anirud—4D I think it was hard because it makes you nervous and you have to help and teach at the same time

Faith—4C It was hard to get everyone’s attention

How to help your child with their reading…

This term in our newsletter, we will be exploring ‘The Big 5’ of reading development. Research has found that each of these

is an essential building block towards our students becoming

successful readers.

The Big 5 Phonic Knowledge Phonic knowledge is the understanding of

sound-letter correspondence to ‘decode’

words when reading.

Ways to support phonic knowledge devel-

opment at home:

Create an alphabet book with pictures of

words that begin with each sound of the

alphabet

Play eye spy with letter sounds instead of

letter names

Encourage your child to ‘stretch out’ or

‘sound out’ new words they encounter

Continue to practise high frequency Ox-

ford words as unfortunately many of these

cannot be decoded and require repeated

exposure

At Kilberry Valley Primary School, we believe

that student success is dependent upon good

attendance at school. Students need to

attend school regularly in order to participate

fully and gain maximum benefit from their

schooling. Daily attendance enables students

to access a full education, allowing them to

reach their full potential. Students with poor

patterns of attendance in primary school

usually have poor patterns in secondary

school and often disengage from school.

There is a direct link between school

attendance and achievement in later life. Poor

attendance also makes it difficult for children

to form positive relationships with their peers

therefore, we feel that regular attendance is

essential for KVPS students.

OUR FOCUS THIS FORTNIGHT:

Treating everyone equally

Follow all staff instructions

Be respectful and courteous to all students, staff and

parents in the community

Hi Everyone, Recycling week is here, we already have 2 posters made about saving our sea life

and some really great ideas on how to make a terrarium using milk cartons and

juice bottles. Tomorrow we will continue to work on the milk carton crafts as well as

making seed balls and our own bubble blowers, as the week goes on there are

more and more exciting things to try, its set to be an awesome week.

Just a reminder that Holiday Club bookings have been live for a couple weeks now,

so don’t forget to jump online www.campaustralia.com.au and check out the

amazing programs in the area, these holidays are going to be super fun.

Here at Kilberry Valley before and after school care we still have some busy weeks

coming up, we will be celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving, we will

research and learn the meaning of each holidays, as we do with all cultural

celebrations and make some amazing displays.

We always welcome new faces so please feel free to pop in and say hello, and we

are happy to answer any questions you might have about the program or holiday

club, we are open in the mornings from 6.30am and are in service until 9am then in

the afternoon we are available from 3pm until 6pm.

Regards your friendly Camp Australia staff Leala and Kirsty

CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS

We would like to remind parents to provide a change of clothing in children’s

school bags—preferably some clean underwear, track suit pants,

windcheater, shorts or a dress.

This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade levels .

We ask for your co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to cope

with the large volume of people requiring changes of clothing.

One of our children in the school community is receiving medical

treatment which puts them at serious risk if they are exposed to

infectious illnesses, in particular: Chicken -Pox, Measles,

Mumps or Shingles.

It is also important that while your child is unwell they remain at home until they

are no longer contagious. Please let us know immediately by calling

the school office on 9702 8688.

As a school community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of

all our students.

Any parent who wishes to help out in our classrooms or on excursions,

must provide a current Working With Childrens Card (WWCC) to the office.

Its free to register as a volunteer https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

On the day you come to assist, please come

through the office and sign in using the visitors kiosk, you will be given a “Classroom helper

Privacy Agreement” to read and sign.

Please ensure you bring your Working With Childrens Card with you, to display in our lanyard, which you will wear while in the

classroom or on excursions.

If your child is absent from school,

please ring the office on 9702 8688

before 9.30am on the morning of the

absence or notify us by e-mail

[email protected].

THANK YOU
