Gravity field and geopotential models

Height systems

Distribution of gravimetric data in France(Number of stations/km²)

• Quality and heterogeneous coverage of data

• Many and different• Discrepancy between techniques• Way to get geopotential heights

• Geodesy based on optical atomic clocks• Nice idea to link geopotential and heights to an atomic reference

Motivations

Problems in geodesy…

New perspectives to overcome these limitations ?

- Better models of geopotential and gravity field- Better vertical reference frames

- Quality of the gravity field 0.5 mGal (plains) - 3 mGal (mountains)- Quality of the geoid 2 cm (plains) - less than 10 cm (mountains)

• Computation methodology

Aims of the project

Assumptions The work is based on an existing gravity network

How to choose a good coverage of clock measurement points?

Motivations

All the geodetic data are synthetics, only their distribution is realistic

We work directly with the disturbing potential T = W - U

Errors on the vertical position is not considered

- 4374 reduced gravity data δg noise = 1mGal

- 33 potential data T noise = 0.1 m2/s2

How to select the gravi points ?

Data reduction from the ~150000 locations Distance between each point ~6.5 km Each point is weighted (number of real points

in the vicinity)

T more sensitive to medium wavelengths λ than δg

How to select the clock points ?

The location of the clock points is chosen to better complete the gravity network

T at same location as δg

- errors of long wavelength interpolation are removed- The gravity has a sensitivity at higher frequency and therefore less sensitive to the long wavelengths that will depend on the a priori. - weight of this a priori is removed when we add clock data

Gravity signal different on both sides of the coastline, with different data coverage with large data gaps at sea and near the coast.Using a single an unique a priori on the region, we obtained similar conclusion than in massif central. We also test to use two a priori, one with marine data and a second one with terrestrial, but it seems it does not work as expected – we have to do more investigation on it Peak to peak => -10/+15 m2/s2 and -60/80 mGals

OK – we have seen clocks can emprove the determination of the geopot, but for practical reason (to do campain with transportable clocks for ex) we wonder how to select efficiently the clock location… To do that, we used the genetic algortihm =>a learning machine technique based on :- Natural sel : capabilty to the indiv to survive longer and reproduce- Genetic : it’s the laws of evolution

This is some concepts used in GA.At the center, what we have the concepts in the real life, and at left how to reproduce that in the digital world- one location point => one gene- one distribution of location points or one possible network => one chromosome X - set of solutions many networks

Just to illustrate, this is how we do in practice…We have a list of sorted points, and for each point we give an ID (the line number for example), and we encode that in binary string

Here I illsutrate a classical scheme of a GA.- initial random pop with N individials- Each indiv is evaluated, the cost function is ok, we keep the indiv, else we pick 2 indiv, we cross them together and we mutate genes-So we have childrens, and we repeat the process until convergence or N generations

GA finds good clock distribution with best residual on T.in this scenario, same number of clocks and same constrains than in the published work.We can see the AG found a different distribution, but with a better biais and a similar rms.

Here, I ask to the AG to minimize also the nb of clocks. We can reduce biases as low as before and even better! with a lower number of clock points because they are better distributed. Actually, I try to optimize the cost function to constrain more strongly the positions of the clock by minimizing residual locally in cells on the study area

Conclusions

19

Clocks provide complementary information to surface and satellite data, particularly in areas poorly covered by gravity data

In our study area, around 30 clock points improve the potential reconstruction (by more than 2 orders of magnitude) and improve accuracy bias (by a factor 3)

Results also confirmed in Alps-Mediterranean region, Bretagne and Atlantlic coast

A GA is a powerful tool to find optimal data coverages (of any kind): smaller residuals on T with 50% less clock points wrt the first results

Temporal variations in the gravity field Could optical clocks (10-19 – 10-20) detect mass-transfer in the mantleor or in subduction zones ?

Sensitivity of clocks to the vertical displacement
