SAFEGUARDING OTHER METAL-FABRICATING MACHINESSAFEGUARDING OTHER METAL-FABRICATING MACHINES

    (Continued on next page.)

The Detect-A-Finger drop-probe devices areused on small machines to protect the operatorsfingers from point-of-operation hazards. The alu-minum probe is shaped by the user to fit eachapplication. Additional material, such as acrylic orpolycarbonate clear plastic pieces or tube-typematerials can be added to the probe to provideadequate protection. When doing this, care shouldbe taken not to add too much additional weight tothe probe. Light materials should be used.

These devices are designed to drop by gravity. If afinger or piecepart is in the way of the probe andthe probe is not allowed to complete its downwardtravel, the machine will not start a cycle or stroke. The rotary solenoid, in some units, is in the con-trol box and when energized, after initiation of thecycle, allows the probe to drop. A spring returnsthe probe to its starting or up position. Another

drop-probe device uses interlocking cams in itsoperating mechanism.

On machines that are mechanically operated, anair cylinder or electric solenoid may have to beadded to the operating linkage to trip the machine. On machines that are hydraulically or pneumati-cally operated, the drop-probe control can usuallybe interfaced with the existing control system.

When updating machines to meet safety stan-dards, please make sure that each machine islooked at as an individual system that includes, but is not limited to, safeguarding (drop-probedevice), machine control, disconnect switch, motorstarter, covers for rotating components, auxiliaryparts, lockout/tagout equipment, and feeding andretrieving of workpieces. These products areincluded in this catalog.

FOR SAFEGUARDING RIVETERS, EYELETTERS,STAKERS, STAPLERS, CRIMPERS, FASTENINGAND ASSEMBLY MACHINESMany machines can easily be safeguarded withthe Detect-A-Finger drop-probe device.

The control box consists of the probe arm, rotaryelectric solenoid, relay, limit switch, basic circuitwith terminals and other mechanical mechanisms.

Two 18" aluminum drop-probe rods are furnishedwith each control box. These rods are shaped by theuser to the workpiece or assembly requirements.

    DETECT-A-FINGER DROP-PROBE DEVICES (continued)

All mechanically operated full-revolution-clutch machines shouldincorporate single-stroke capability (mechanism).

See the bottom of page 253 for machines requiring single-strokepackages.

    TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Electropneumatic or Electrohydraulic MachinesElectrically or Electropneumatically Tripped Machines

(Incorporating Mechanical Full-Revolution ClutchTypical on Riveting, Eyeletting and Staking Machines)

Sequence of OperationThe operator initiates the cycle of the machineusually by an overt action on the foot switch. This energizes the rotary solenoid in the controlbox, which allows the drop probe to drop untilit makes contact with a limit switch. If anobstruction, such as a finger, gets in the way ofthe probe, the limit switch is not contacted andthe machine does not start its cycle. If nothingobstructs the probe and the limit switch isoperated, a relay will signal the machine tostart its cycle or cause it to trip. Next, the relaydrops out, deenergizing the control box sole-noid, allowing the probe to move up and out ofthe way. At this time, the machine completesits cycle and stops. The foot switch must bereleased and reinitiated to begin another cycle.
