DETAILED TUNNEL INSPECTIONS
NEW TECHNOLOGIES: DI NT©
CERN WORKSHOP – Thursday, October 24th
The feedback of the main operators of road networks with tunnels highlights :
- an increasingly frequent problem in closing a traffic direction and, moreover, over several
nights,
- the will to comply with technical instructions (fascicle 40),
In short, it is a question of organizing detailed inspections with the lowest possible impact
on the operation, while respecting the regulations.
The search for a balance between operating constraints and exhaustive findings remains for a
long time, but operators are increasingly tended to give priority to the lack of operating constraints,
sometimes at the expense of Quality.
This is particularly reflected in an increase in scanner acquisition services....

• Scanner topo technology
- Use of a rotating scanner,
- Enables thermographic scanning,
- Enables cloud point acquisition and application
of high-resolution color photographs
• On-board scanner technology
- Use of an embedded rotating scanner,
- Enables the acquisition of high-resolution
grayscale images,
- Enables thermographic reading,

Technologies Advantages Disadvantages
Detailed
"classic"
inspection
• Direct contact with the facing of the structure,
Inspection of all parts of the structure including
heads, drainage, area of influence,
• Possibility of hammer inspection and purging if
necessary,
• Carried out by qualified inspectors: Degree of
precision allowing an exhaustive analysis of
disorders and a good quality of inspection reports,
• Compliant with ITSEOA.
• Long field presence time,
• Significant constraint on exploitation,
• Need to use a means of access allowing continuous
contact and movement along the facing of the
structure
On-board
scanner
survey
• Acquisition of the image of the entire coating
surface,
• Fast acquisition/low impact on operations,
• Thermographic reading
• No contact with the facing,
• No areas are inspected as defined by the ITSEOA,
• No evidence of sanitation/drainage law, heads and
areas of influence,
• It is only about acquisition, no data analysis skills to
make an ID report,
• High cost.
Topo scanner
survey
• Acquisition of the image of the entire coating
surface,
• Extremely precise point cloud,
• Aesthetics of rendering
• No contact with the facing,
• No areas are inspected as defined by the ITSEOA,
• No evidence of sanitation/drainage law, heads and
areas of influence,
• It is only about acquisition, no data analysis skills to
make an ID report,
• High cost,
• Long acquisition period, significant impact on
operations
ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES OF THE MAIN TUNNEL OBSERVATION METHODS
Development principles of the ID NT method ©:
Based on feedback from several years of detailed inspections using traditional methods,
- Application of the positive points of each method presented in the table above,
- The principle is to combine innovative acquisition resources with the technical
expertise of the structural inspectors on site.
The first approach of this method is not necessarily to apply the "stealth" principle but
rather to recognize that a cut-off or restriction is required to complete a detailed inspection
while limiting their number.

Description of the device :
The system developed and patented by Diadès consists in different sensors combined with
each other and grouped in a single box suspended on a mobile system with manual or
towable push. This apparatus is composed by 5 elements :
- Video cameras and very-high resolution cameras in the imagery field,
- Infrared cameras,
- Profilometers and distance meters,
- Temperature / Humidity sensors,
- A continuous lighting system to minimize the potential inconvenience of flash lighting for
vehicles and operators in the vicinity of the system.

An interface has been developed to allow data control during acquisition.
Thanks to an alert system, the interface also allows to identify in real time one point of attention
to temperature.
These points are immediately saved and located so that the inspector can integrate them
directly into his on-site reserves lifts.

OPERATING MODE :
A single-pass acquisition of the tunnel bottom surface at a speed of between 1 and
3km/h, thus limiting the number of night cuts.
Real-time reading and an alert system make it possible to identify (by using thermography in
particular) the areas that may represent a doubt about some disorders.
The presence of a confirmed inspector during the acquisition makes it possible to arbitrate
these alerts but also to remove all doubts by accessing directly (by means of an aerial bucket)
to the concerned parts of the structure.
The inspector's presence also makes it possible to inspect areas that are not accessible
by automated means (heads, connecting galleries, drainage system, zone of influence)
and that are an integral part of the findings in the detailed inspection report.
At the end of the on-site intervention, the inspectors have therefore access to all the
photographic acquisition of the intrados of the structure in the visual and infrared fields,
and have cleared out all the doubts they would have had by using the scanner acquisition
method.
