Strategy: Four Pics One Word
Before we proceed to our lesson, I wantyou to see this map first. We already
discussed a lot of Afro-Asian literarypiece. Studying literature of different
countries is like a magic airplane. Wetravel from one country to another
discovering their culture and traditionsthrough literary texts.
What are those countries that we alreadystudied?
Now, I have here a map, as you can see all
the countries that weve already disussedare plotted by marks.
Today we will go to another country by
studying a story. But before that we willplay a game called FOUR PICS ONE

Very good. It is a Japanese folktale.So what is a folktale?

Now, we will discuss the Japanese folktaleentitled The Touch of Happiness.
Comprehension questions:1. Why did Matsui feel very sad?
Yes thats correct. Matsui felt very sadbecause even if he is an industrious
farmer , his rice field and his gardenalways failed to produce or to yield
crops. He is also worried because it is
their source of income or living.
Matsui was sad because after all his hard
work and patience his rice field and gardenfailed to produce crops.

What did he do to solve his problem?What does it say of him?
Excellent answer. Since Matusi cannot
make a living out of his rice field andgarden, he decided to go to another
venture or business. He went to theirgodown or storehouse and he found
few painting materials used by hisgrandfather. He painted pictures then
he sold some of it. But he has so littlepainting skill so eventhough he had
good ideas to paint he only painted
simple pictures and he only sold three.
This actions showed that Matsui has apositive attitude, he never give up
although he has big problems. He isstill very patient and willing to take
risks.
3. Who do you think, was the stranger
who visited Matsui? What did he tell
Matsui?
Very good answer. One day Matsuiwas very busy painting pictures, when
out of nowhere just like magic, astranger appeared in front of him. The
stranger is one of the Seven Gods ofHappiness.
Matsui told the stranger that it seems
that the Gods forgot to bless his spot.But he is trying his best to see what
can be done and he said that he willnever give up hope.
The statement of the stranger reveals
He decided to see what can be done in theirgodown. He found painting materials and he
painted simple pictures . Then he sold it.His action reveals that he is very optimistic,
patient and creative man.
These shows that Matsui is a patient,industrious and optimistic.
The stranger who visited Matsui is one of the
Seven Gods of Happiness because he has
suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
The stranger told Matsui the following
statements, the Seven Gods of Happinessalways leave their mark, but some men are
not quick to see it. Because of your patienceyou shall see the Touch of Happiness they
gave here, for they left no spot forgotten.

that the Gods had blessed all the
people but some are not aware of it.But because Matsui is a patient man he
will see the Touch of Happiness leftby the Gods.
4. What mark did the Seven Gods of
Happiness leave Matsuis rice field?
Yes, thats right. Aftre the strangerleft, Matsui went to his ruined rice
field and there he saw a beautifulblossom of the iris flower. He planted
a lot of iris flower and after the nextseason it grew so well that it filled the
whole rice field. The beautiful sight of
the iris flowers were admired by thepeople in the town and some pilgrimsor travellers were fascinatedbyMatsuis flowers. These iris flowers
were the mark or the blessing that isbestowed to Matsui by the Seven Gods
of Happiness.
5. Why did the pilgrims buy Matsuispaintings?
Very well said. The pilgrims were soattracted to the iris flowers. They are
so happy to buy the paintings made byMatsui because they believed that
Mastuis iris flower plantation is theplace where the Seven Gods of
Happiness left their mark or bestowedtheir divine blessings.
