Detailed assignments and responsibilities of Andreas Kalantzis

Specific insight regarding my responsibilities as a Civil/Structural Engineer on selected projects of Andreas Kalantzis CV:

1. Project name: Three storey apartment building

Architectural: Design of the architectural floor layout considering and in order to fulfill the daily needs of the client (family that needs an individual apartment on each storey for self use). Approximately 250 m² total floor plan

Structural Analysis: Modal response spectrum analysis using behavior coefficient q=3.5 in order to obtain the design spectrum and capacity design checks on all the column-beam nodes in order to create plastic hinges and energy dissipation zone only at the beams(interface column-beam). This way we prevent soft storey mechanisms and we securing a ductile-flexural mechanism of failure for the building. Chosen bearing structure system of the building: frames and ductile shear walls.

Structural Design: Design of the reinforcement plans and the cross sections. The number and the place of the longitudinal reinforcement bars according to construction codes (the so called detailing) on every column, beam, shear wall cross section, reinforcement plans for plates/cells and the foundation. Calculation of the confinement and shear stirrups along the structural members on critical and non critical zones

Project management assignments: Estimation of the total cubic meters of concrete and responsible for the specifications of the premix concrete order (strength, water to cement ratio aggregate, supplemental materials etc.) directly from the factory. Estimation of the total amount of longitudinal reinforcement bars, stirrups in kg. Site engineer for the cement pouring process, the implementation of the drawing and reinforcement plans

2. Project name: Construction of a 60 m² swimming pool in addition to a summer residence

Structural analysis: Modal response spectrum analysis using the elastic spectrum and eigenform analysis for the displacements and the moment, shear, torsion moment, axial diagrams. Bearing structure consisting of shell elements with six degrees of freedom using the finite element method

Structural design: Design of the reinforcement plans and the reinforcement detailing for the wall cross sections and plates (vertical longitudinal bars of steel, horizontal confinement stirrups and lateral ties).

Construction: Supervising engineer of the soil excavation and the implementation of the reinforcement plans. Selection of the technicians for the molds of concrete and the pouring process after consideration of their bids (e.g. 40 € / cubic meter of concrete including molds, pouring and finishing of concrete)

3. Project name: Rehabilitation and seismic strengthening of an old manor

Structural analysis: Push over analysis using an existing earthquake accelerogram to obtain the demand-capacity curvature, the sequence and the place of the failures that may occur, the existing curvature ductility and displacement factors. Retrofitting strategy: new lateral loading resisting system consisting of steel bracing, new concrete walls and moment frames, concrete jacketing mainly for columns, use of FRP materials, strengthen of masonry walls with steel mesh/grid.

Construction: Oversight engineer for the shotcrete technology

Project management assignments: Time schedule for the progress of project with Gantt diagram.

4. Project name: Retaining wall

Structural analysis: Analysis of a 30 m long and 6m high retaining wall with the use of finite element method (shell element with 4 degrees of freedom, two displacements and two rotations) to obtain the stresses by consideration of the soil interaction

Structural design: Configuration of the steel reinforcements of the retaining wall and the footing with vertical and horizontal rebar’s, s shaped reinforcements. The wall body is reinforced by two parallel grates one at each face and they are held by s-shaped reinforcements and ties. Vertical and horizontal rebar’s of ϕ10 diameter and s-shaped equal to 4ϕ10/m²

5. Project name: Renovation of a flat

Contractor: Oversight engineer for the coordination and the selection of the technicians (plumbers, electricians, painters, patio technicians etc) according to their bids and their work. Time scheduling of the works for the on time delivery to the client

Architectural: Design of the new architectural layout of the flat in a modern way to fit the client’s daily needs. Relocation of the kitchen, increasing the living room space by repealing a bedroom, increase of the space of the bathroom

6. Project name: Rehabilitation of damaged anchorage bar lengths

Structural: Rehabilitation of the insufficient and damaged anchorage reinforcement bar lengths of the columns of a two storey summer residency with the use of FRP materials ( carbon fiber fabric, Sika Wrap, Sika Ag) in order to provide confinement and to increase the ductility of the members

Contractor: Construction of the final upper floor of the residency made out of reinforced concrete

Page 3: Detailed assignments, responsibilities on projects

Project management assignments: Syntax of the ready mixed concrete order (strength of concrete MPa, water to cement ratio, workability ratio, admixtures, type and amount of aggregate), Estimation of the total cubic meters of concrete that were in need, Estimation of the total amount of steel in kg
