Raja Ampat, Indonesia

The name of Raja Ampat literally means the “Four Kings” and is made up of over 1,500 islands. Raja Ampat’s name comes from a local myth of a woman who finds seven eggs. Four of the seven eggs hatch and become kings that occupy four of Raja Ampat’s main islands Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool while the other three become a ghost, a woman, and a stone.

Most of the islands have rugged and steep coastlines and are covered with virgin rainforest. The largest islands are lightly populated by mainly Papuan- Mollucan but most others are uninhabited by humans.

Diving

Indonesia is one of the most outstanding dive locations, hosting the greatest variety of marine life than anywhere else in the world. 75% of the worlds coral species can be found in Raja Ampat alone (That’s 10 times more than in the Caribbean) including 3,000+ species of fish and 700 species of mollusks.

Diving is exceptional whether it be big pelagic fish, muck diving, drift diving, walls, wrecks; the water is constantly warm and visibility excellent.

Raja Ampat can be visited all year round but the best period is from October to April.
