It encompasses the hardware and software systems required to support the virtualized environment.

Currently there are a few VDIs to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses … they are:

The Centralized Model relies upon a constant network or internet connection to the server where the VDI instance is running.

There are a number of different software options relative to how the VM is managed and delivered by the server.

Computation takes place on a centralized server. The desktop device is for input and display only.

Hybrid Virtual Desktop Client Hosted environment such as “VMWARE” requires specific skills and knowledge to setup, manage and maintain effectively.

Requires a robust network and a high-end server (expensive to deploy).

Considered the high cost / medium performance alternative.

One to Few VDI - Typically dedicated resources which results in the performance comparable to a standalone PC.

Each user gets their own IP and MAC addresses

Each of the user’s “stations” are directly connected (Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor) to the host system, which means they operate in native mode and act just like a standalone PC.

Multi-Seat VDI is not a server based system reducing the capital cost requirements.

Each user is connected directly to separate video cards so there is no degradation in performance even if running video intense application on all stations.
