Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) As demand for high-quality API and chemicals increases, we can help you achieve higher levels of compliance in process development and manufacturing. Fully aware of the demand for increasingly pure and potent actives, excipients, and intermediates used in today’s pharmaceutical and bio-products, we support all phases of drug and chemical development from bench-top through to high-volume production.

Handling of bio/pharmaceutical chemicals requires current knowledge of regulatory restrictions, modern equipment capabilities, and employee and equipment safety procedures. Our commitment to ongoing education, coupled with on-site staff with chemical processing experience, ensures that your product and employees will be protected.

Oral Solid Dosage (OSD) We also specialize in the facility, process, equipment requirements, and global regulatory issues associated with the research, development, and manufacturing of tablets, capsules, and other solid-dose forms. A large part of any OSD facility is driven by the individual process and equipment requirements. To appropriately design, engineer, build, renovate, or configure a modern OSD facility, it is best to work in the context of “process-out”, as opposed to “facility in”. Whether you’re challenged with modern OSD facility and process design; facility/process and equipment configurations; critical/non-critical utilities, HVAC, and process equipment; commissioning, qualification, and compliance; isolation and containment design and engineering; process analytical technology; or sustainability and energy efficiency, we speak your language.

I am continually energized by the challenges of my work, particularly given that no two projects are the same. Unique problems require creative solutions in this industry where technology is rapidly changing and where tight schedules are the norm due to patent limitations.” —Tony Rao, PE

I am rewarded every day by the knowledge that our designs of pharmaceutical manufacturing plants help bring new life-saving medicines into commercial production, and benefit people around the world.”

Medical Device Products Cognizant of the ongoing changes in medical technology development and regulatory policy, our integrated team of engineers and architects designs and qualifies specialized processes, facilities, and systems.

We partner with the medical community to provide support for technologies such as drug deliveries, implants, analytical equipment, surgical sutures, in vitro reagents, and other similar devices, which are useful for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

Parenterals We work with companies of all sizes that are involved in the development, formulation, commercial-scale manufacturing, and filling of sterile drug products. These manufactured products, typically in injectable liquid-dose form, must comply with sterile regulations during all phases of production and packaging.

Our designs for parenteral facilities and processes address issues associated with the manufacturing of injectable pharmaceuticals as well as the controlled environment required to protect the product and employee.

Vaccines & Biotechnology Are you faced with issues that are critical to improving efficiencies such as proper equipment selection, facility layout, space planning, infrastructure, security, equipment, and regulatory requirements? We understand the business of finished biological and vaccine products, along with associated filling, packaging, and distribution activity. It’s what we do. We design facilities and process systems that fully meet regulatory requirements and provides efficient operations and maintenance.

Public institutions are focused on teaching and intellectual product research. They vary tremendously from their private sector and government counterparts, whose focus is more on security and commercial product delivery.

We know that product research and development is highly competitive. We can help you succeed in identifying, developing, and manufacturing your product so that you can get it out to market in a time-efficient and cost effective manner.

Research & DevelopmentTogether, we can create facilities and processes that are adaptable to future challenges, contribute to the control of disease, promote medical advancement, and develop emerging science and technologies for the good of our communities.

Vivariums Housing for animals, plants, and fish is dependent on the species and the chosen facility’s ability to promote health, comfort, and safety for the living organism. Our designs consider size, environmental demand, containment, protection, and well-being for growth or production.

Vivariums can range from large-animal accommodation in barns, to small-animal microenvironments, with bio/containment considerations for situations involving biological risk group agents. Marine species require tanks with controlled fresh or salt water environments and plants require greenhouses or growth chambers with environmental controls. These also consider biological risk group hazards for the protection of the species, worker, and the outside community. We work with you to determine the design requirements of the vivarium facility and system, in conjunction with regulatory agencies and authority standards.

Biological High Containment Classification of organisms according to risk group has traditionally been used to categorize the relative hazard of infectious organisms. Risk Group 3 is considered high individual risk and Risk Group 4 is high risk to both the individual and the community.

Infectious agents can include bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. Some pathogens infect humans, others are unique to livestock or poultry and some are zoonotic agents capable of causing disease in both humans and animals. Diseases, such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, have the potential to mutate and crossover to infect humans. Emerging diseases, the ones not yet identified or developed in an infectious form, present a high risk in dealing with the unknown.

We design specialized containment facilities that are required when working with highly infectious agents. This is for the protection of the worker, environment, and community. Research work with non-indigenous pathogens, which are agents not present in the local environment, requires special consideration to maintain the facility containment barrier and avoid pathogen migration to susceptible environments with no developed immunity.

Truly great design is a product of endless passion and intense commitment, with success measured in outcome and not in hours.” —David Linamen, PE, CEM, LEED® AP

Diagnostic Diagnostic labs often provide a support function for associated clinical and medical procedures. These facilities and systems are part of a larger complex, or may be secondary, remote, stand-alone facilities within the public healthcare system. Work with human and animal specimens that may be infectious requires that they all be handled as biohazard material and that techniques and equipment be applied to control aerosols, spills, or any other inadvertent release of samples and reagents.

Our experience covers medical, as well as diagnostic, pathology, including provincial T.B. labs that work with a walk-in population. Diagnostic services are also provided by food and drug safety labs under federal regulatory jurisdiction. Labs for the agricultural sector are designed for facilities that work with and identify animal pathogens, through necropsy of animals, birds, and fish.

Research and Development / Quality Assurance Bringing significant experience programming, planning, and designing for the physical life sciences, our integrated team of architects and engineers continue to collaborate with some of the most advanced high-technology research and development manufacturers. Whether the lab is operated in an academic, industrial, or manufacturing environment, we drive the design direction, based on the function and process of the laboratory when designing the facility.

Research facilities must incorporate flexibility into the building and systems. With consideration to environment, safety, and energy conservation, we ensure the facility and systems design adapts to frequently changing programs. Alternatively, labs for industry can be situated in hazardous locations. They can either be required for the purpose of quality control or for the development of innovative processes and products. Whether it’s biochemistry, ceramics, wafer fabrication, electronics, photonics, polymer, or a myriad of other science facilities, our designs of these laboratories are helping to advance new discoveries.

Cleanrooms The design of clean spaces or cleanrooms involves much more than traditional temperature and humidity control. Other factors include control of particle, microbial, electrostatic discharge, molecular, and gaseous contamination.

Our experience and capabilities in cleanroom design ranges from positive pressure barrier facilities for classified biological processes to clean spaces in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, microelectronics, semiconductors, and aerospace industries.

We develop facilities and systems in response to the process demands and include aseptic processing areas, non-aseptic products, and semi-conductor manufacturing. Cleanroom standards are defined by ISO 14644-1 classification as well as your standards for the production facility.

Semi-Conductor We provide you with the tools and insights necessary for tactical, safe, and strategic planning. Through collaboration, we can determine the potential for improved manufacturing efficiencies using emerging technologies, as well as examine potential threats to the existing manufacturing infrastructure.

We integrate your facility around the process. Providing specialty clean environments and air emission control systems are fundamental to these facility types.
