The project is a charter high school for Environmental and Science for 450 students, including classrooms, library, cafeteria/kitchen, gymnasium, secured recreation, and garden spaces, located on a 1.5 acre of greenfield site located at the intersection of North Avenue and Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. The project calls for three distinct responses; urban, pedagogical, and environmental. First, the project’s open plaza facing the Peachtree Street will serve as one of the main public gathering spaces of the city. The project extends an existing psychological boundary of the city beyond the Peachtree Street by providing both physical and visual connections. Secondly, strategically located, main learning space between the city and a natural environment constantly exposes students to two distinct living conditions and helps them learn about a sustainable life style. Carefully situated programs on the main circuit of the project, including public plaza, experimental garden, gymnasium, interior pool, main stair and ramp to roof, cafeteria, and library, will also educate students for healthy mind by emphasizing an importance of physical health. Lastly, a separation of building structure from the building envelope allows the building envelope to operate independently from the structure that provides flexibilities in adjusting the interior environment. Sliding screens and operable windows help minimizing thermal gains and provide natural ventilation and controlled views of exterior. The atrium space separating two main volumes of the building also provides stack ventilation effects for cooling.

Corporate headquarters, office buildings, and retail stores of high-end design company buildings are generally located in a central fashion district, such as Ginza, Tokyo or Manhattan, New York. The buildings are often designed by famous architects, such as SANNA for Dior Building. These buildings tyipcally present a unique facade design. Despite of elaborate facade designs, basic structures and forms of the buildings present rather uniform and typical rectilinear box shapes. School of design including an exhibition hall would fit well with a concept of veiling. The process of design involves various stages, which can be described in terms of different types of veiling. Sometimes, it is an introverted process that is hidden and private where initial brainstorming and design development processes take place. Other times, it is an extroverted process that is revealed and exposed when the design products are being advertized. As veil hides and shows its structures behind it, the process of design itself can be expressed in terms of veil, which can be translated into a dynamic building skin. The building skin and the program behind interactively influence each other, resulting in a dynamic representational space in both exterior and interior of the building.

Federal Courthousein Mobile AlabamaThesis Studio / Spring 2012Professor Athanassios EconomouIn collaboration with Jack Yeh

This exploratory courthouse grammar describes a concept of series of promenade and gardens. The courthouse experience becomes more dynamic and engaging with an emphasis on natural lights, views, and movements through a succession of staircases, ramps, and corridors. Based on a distinct and unique circulation patterns of three networks, restrictive, secured, and public, and its users, the system intersects, connects, and diverges in response to programmatic requirements. The site sits on the edge of the city where it separates a historical neighborhood from the city’s downtown. This edge holds a boundary of oak tree populations that only exists in the historical neighborhood. This forest-like condition disappears in downtown except in a central square that is heavily vegetated. This grammar proposes to bridge this segmented condition and to provide a public green through the site and reconnect with the existing city fabric.
