Serial GMII (SGMII)
Features Benefits
SGMII uses fewer pins than RGMII/GMII
• Simplifies planning the route for each trace, which shortens the design cycle and reduces costs.
• Fewer pins results in fewer lines on the PCB which will reduce routing congestion and power. This allows chips to be placed closer together on the board, and therefore reduces system costs.
Serial line interface between Gigabit Ethernet MAC and PHY
• Shifting from parallel to serial connections allow for longer connections and eliminates the need for synchronized signaling.
• Allows for direct connections between the switching chip and the optical fiber modules because the data no longer needs to be shipped off-chip to a SerDes.
Format uses 4 or 8 traces that all run at 1.25 GHz • 4X the performance of traditional PHYs
Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) format • Greatly improves signal integrity
