- Depot and market of goods carried between two waterways

- Shortest distances between Lake Ponchartrain and the Mississippi River

- Narrow strip of land aided rapid troop movements

- River’s shape showed down the river, exposing them to gunfire

WHY BUILD AND LIVE ON WETLANDS?

The natural levees gave high ground and the best drainage. The Metairie and Gentilly ridges provided secondary surrounding of high ground. The levee sloped from river into that were below sea level and prone to flooding, while from the ridge the land sloped to sea level and the Lake.

LOWER 9TH WARD PROGRAM

Non-diverse programming in the Lower 9th ward..What canbe introduced?

How can these new programs benefit the Lower 9th ward?

Only 35% of the people in the Lower 9th ward returned. By introducing new program that are needed to make a good neighborhod, will give more people the desire to move there.move there.

NOW WHAT ELSE?

- Schools - Hospital- Housing - Emergency spaces-Commercial - Public green spaces

Rigid Separation

In the Lower 9th ward, there are only three programs. There is therefore a needed for more programs in order to create an area that people would not only want to live but also visit. By introducing tourism there is a chance to introduce new programs in order to benefit the Lower 9th ward in a permanent and seasonal way.

Tourism

Tourism creates 35% of New Orleans income, however it is only located in one area of the city. By expanding the areas tourism it allows for the cre-ation of more income. However, because tourism is seasonal, it is necessary to not waste space on these programs without the allowance of re-using the space, during the off season.

Topography issues/Flooding : RESULT ON CITY

New Orleans is threated by flooding everyday from three sources: The Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain and natural rainfall. Both the river and lake are above the land level, therefore levees were put in place to prevent the rising river and lake from entering the land. However the levees has created an opposite affect of keeping rainwater in. Pumping is therefore required 24hrs a day, 7 days a weeek to fight the flooding battle.

Rigid Separation

Due to the development of the highway and the growth pattern of the Lower 9th ward, the ar-eas was split in three segments. Because of this problem there is a need to re-join the area in order of it to function in a more fluid way.
