Historic Kenwood – More Than Ever, an Enclave for Arts and Artists

Historic Kenwood was founded in 1912 on the 160-acre tract situated between 25th and 31st Streets from 1st Avenue South to 5th Avenue North.

Most homes were built on site during the early 1920s. But during the mid-1930s, approximately 170 were moved to this area. More than 1,000 homes now make up Historic Kenwood and 95 percent are considered contributing structures to our official entry in the National Registry of Historic Places.

Among Historic Kenwood’s true distinctions are the warmth and creativity that infuse our neighborhood. Visual, performing, and cultural artists who live in our midst help to spark this vitality, as do the arts organizations and businesses in the adjoining Grand Central District, and events like our BungalowFest, Art in the Park, and porch party performances.

Now, we’re coming down the home stretch toward becoming an official “Artist Enclave” – a St. Pete zoning designation that will enable artists to have home-based studios in designated areas of Kenwood. They’ll be able to teach, produce work, and meet small numbers of clients in their own spaces. Together, they’ll also be able to sponsor up to 12 special events each year.

The soon-to-be Artist Enclave is one more feature that sets Historic Kenwood apart as an authentic, vibrant, and highly desirable neighborhood. This effort will help us to attract more artists, enhance the value of our properties, and further enrich the spirit of our neighborhood.

Children’s Cancer CenterHelping children and families cope. That is the mission of the Children’s Cancer Center, a local non-profit organization based in Tampa, dedicated to serving Tampa Bay families of children with cancer or chronic blood disorders.

“When a child is diagnosed, the whole family is diagnosed,” explains Children’s Cancer Center COO, Patty O’Leary. “Our mission is to provide these children and their families with the educational, emotional and financial relief necessary to cope with the illnesses which threaten to tear their lives apart.”

With 25 programs and services currently helping over 850 families, support is offered to all members of the family and is available throughout every step of their difficult journey – from diagnosis and treatment, to survivorship . . . and sadly, too often, bereavement.

While other organizations are committed to finding a cure tomorrow, the Children’s Cancer Center is committed to helping families cope today. They are dedicated solely to being there for each family through this devastating experience.

One day at a time.

To learn more about the Children’s Cancer Center, its mission, or how you may become part of this important support system for Tampa Bay families devastated by Cancer or Chronic Blood Disorders, please visit us at www.childrenscancercenter.org or call Alan G Mock, Director of Marketing, at 813-367-5437 ext.5.

Historic Kenwood is proud to welcome the Children’s Cancer Center as the sponsoring charity of this year’s Designer Show Home. Proceeds from the Designer Show Home ticket sales

will go directly to the Center.

Historic Kenwood & BungalowsA bungalow is a one or one-and-a-half story house of simple design, expressed structure, built from natural or local materials, with a low-slope roof, overhanging eaves, and a prominent porch, built during the Arts and Crafts period in America (approximately 1900-1930).

A lifestyle magazine has included Historic Kenwood in its survey of the top ten “cottage communities” in the nation.

The story in the July 2006 issue of Cottage Living magazine defined “cottage communities” in terms residents of Historic Kenwood will readily recognize: “places with porches and gardens, parks and playgrounds; streets where you can stroll to locally-owned shops and restaurants; areas with architecture that makes your heart skip a beat; places where neighbors know your name and are trustworthy, dependable and free for a cookout on Friday night.”

In 2007, Historic Kenwood was named one of Neighborhood USA’s top three neighborhoods in the United States. Historic Kenwood has also been featured in American Bungalow magazine several times.

All of these honors are tributes to the hard work of it’s residents to improve the area while preserving its past!

Bill’s 1928 bungalow has 1800 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a two-car garage.

He restored the previously removed built-ins between the living room and the dining room, and the formica counter tops were replaced. The tub and the tile floor in the front bathroom are original to the house.

Bill loves the fireplace, the front porch, the three different types of Cuban tile and the built-ins.

He bought the house because he had the opportunity to buy a roomy old bungalow on the park with virtually no work needed. The extra room is essential to house his collection of authentic Mission Style furniture.

While the inside of the house is captivating, Bill can be found most weekends working outside in his beautiful garden and yard.

“The best thing about this neighborhood are my wonderful neighbors. All of us look out for each other and our property,” Bill says. “Also, I love the park, and I am so happy to have such a beautiful view of it.”

Marci & Don Orgeron share their 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with their daughter Elodie and Maltese named Chin-Chin. They also have a detached 1 bedroom and a studio apartment. As was common at the time in the neighborhood, the garage and apartments were built several years prior to construction to the main house.

Such was the case here with the garage built in 1939 and the main house in 1942.

Since the Orgerons moved in, they’ve added bamboo floors, a bathroom, granite kitchen counters, new appli-ances inside. Outside, they’ve installed an irrigation sys-tem, sod and landscaping, a new patio and driveway.

Their favorite feature is the set of French doors between the living room and back porch that allow them to live inside/outside easily.

Marci and Don moved to Kenwood because the eclec-tic neighborhood reminded them of her native Venice, California. Also, they liked the large number of intact bungalows and mid-century homes and active renovation along with the close proximity to downtown.

Katherine stumbled across Historic Kenwood and fell in love with the first house she found for sale, which happened to be this 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom bungalow. Since then, she has renovated the entire 1925 home. She’s installed new electric, plumbing, a heating and cooling system and roof. She’s had walls moved and all of the woodwork stripped and repainted.

Mixing the old with modern, a new kitchen and bathrooms have been installed, floors have been refinished and crown moulding added. Outside, the front porch was opened up and a new fence and landscape were added.

Katherine’s big bright kitchen with brand new appliances is her very favorite feature.

To say neighbors were relieved when Katherine started working on her home is an understatement. Renovations like this are what Historic Kenwood is all about.

Can you believe the partial inspiration for the song ‘Mustang Sally’ is living in Historic Kenwood? And yes, she spells her name Sallie, but Sallie Hackett Brown is our muse.

First, the house. It was built in 1915 and is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with a detached garage with apartment. Since she moved in, Sallie has replaced the heating and air, painted everything and re-done all of the landscaping.

An artist, Sallie loves the openness of the front porch and main rooms so she can display her sculptures and pictures.

Okay, back to the song. Aretha Franklin suggested that Wilson Picket re-do a song called ‘Mustang Mama.’ The song became ‘Mustang Sally’ and was a big hit in 1966.

The name change came because Aretha heard a Motown deejay say good morning every weekday to ‘that red-headed Sallie up there with the mustang’. One Miss Sallie Hackett Brown was once a billboard model and was the face of the Ford Mustang back in the 60’s.

Sallie moved to Historic Kenwood to ‘be part of the revitalization.’ Sallie shares the bungalow with her other half, James.

Page 26: Designer Show Home

Name: Nancy & Bill FisherAddress: 2511 Third Avenue NorthHome Style: Craftsman Bungalow

5

Bill and Nancy bought their 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home the day after BungalowFest last year, so they are very NEW Kenwoodians.

Since they moved in, they’ve added a master bathroom, painted inside and out, replaced the roof and installed a new front sidewalk.

It’s hard to pick a favorite feature in their 1929 bungalow, but the Fisher’s love their front porch, large rooms, win-dows in the sun room and shady backyard.

They moved to Historic Kenwood because they could not resist the cute homes and the charm of the neigh-borhood that reminded Nancy of her hometown in Nitro, West Virginia. “We have very friendly neighbors, great walking areas plus the bonus of the community porch parties and activities,” Nancy said. “Best of all, there is a sense that ‘we are all in this together’ to keep Historic Kenwood the best place to live in St. Pete.

Name: The O’Connor’sAddress: 2242 Burlington Avenue NorthHome Style: Four Square

Before Kevin and Lisa O’Connor bought ‘The Burlington House,’ it operated as a by-the-room rental and also as a convalescent home for a short time in the 1960’s. It was originally built in 1918 on Central Avenue and relocated to it’s current Burlington Avenue plot in 1926.

This 6 bedroom and 2.5 bath home was perfect for the O’Connor’s and their daughter, Maris, who moved to the neighborhood in 2001. Over the past decade, they have undone a lot of ‘remuddling’, including updating the kitchen and baths, and refinishing the heart of pine floors.

Lisa’s favorite features are the large spacious kitchen and open floor plan, and the original 6-foot cast iron soaking tub upstairs.

When asked why they moved to Historic Kenwood, Lisa explained, ”Before Maris started kindergarten, we traveled a lot. When it was time for her to start school we decided it was time to ‘settle down.’ Kenwood was just in the beginning of it’s revival and we felt good about investing in this community. We bought our first Kenwood home on Third Avenue in 1997. After a taste for renovating, four years later we bought ‘The Burlington House.’”

The O’Connors share their home with their family pets Sunny, a yellow lab and Scarlett O’Hare, a very funny bunny.

There is a lot more home than meets the eye in this brightly-colored corner bungalow. For starters, it’s a 4 bedroom, 2 full and 2 half bath 1925 restoration. Secondly, there is a pool and a brand new pool room.

Janet and Karen purchased the home in 2002 and immediately replaced all of the floors, renovated the kitchen and the upstairs. In 2005, the pool was added on the double lot and their favorite feature -- the pool room -- followed a year later. They moved to Historic Kenwood, because of the bungalows and the proximity to downtown St. Petersburg.

Janet and Karen share their bungalow with Esther, a beautiful great dane.

Joe and Cliff purchased the main 4 bedroom, 4 bathhouse in 1995. But the home has an interesting history: The garage apartment (built prior to 1918) was the original house on the property. In 1931, it was raised and a garage added underneath. Then, the main house was built in 1935. They purchased the adjacent bungalow about 8 years ago. It was completely renovated as a guest house and a pool was added to the property.

Joe and Cliff love the older elements of the home like the granite and marble stones used on the house surrounding floor-to-ceiling beveled glass windows, fireplace and sun room floor. They also love the mahogany paneling and other woods used throughout the home.

They also love the newer elements of the home — the kitchen with custom cherry cabinets and, of course, the pool.

The men were fortunate to meet the only child of the original owner and builder. “She has been to our home and gave us the original blueprints and architectural drawings as well as pictures when she grew up in the home,” Joe explained. “ A Christmas present from her to us was a monogrammed marble set of bookends given to her father by stonemasons who worked on the house.”

“We were looking for an older home in the downtown area found this home and fell in love with it and the location,” said Joe. And the rest, as they say, is history.

There are a lot of larger homes on the home tour this year and the Mixson’s is no exception. This 5 bedrooms, 3 bath Four Square was built in 1935.

The home was a duplex when the family of five moved in. In addition to converting it to a single-family home, they replaced almost all of the floors throughout the house. They recently added a master bathroom, laundry room and deck in the backyard.

They have found pros and cons to the original floor plan. Some of the doorways are very narrow, making furniture placement quite a challenge. But the master bedroom was originally a living room, so there is space galore!

But the Mixson’s didn’t start here. “We first moved to Historic Kenwood in 2001. We found an adorable bungalow that we fell in love with. We really came to love the neighborhood and when it was time to ‘upsize’ we were thrilled to be able to stay in the area,” explained Heather.

Dave, Heather, Hannah, Sarah and Micah share their home with Bridget, their “fierce” watchdog.
