    Mark David has been appointed

    covering an area stretching from

north of the Thames up the EastCoast of the UK. Churchman

    meanwhile will continue to look

after business for the brand inthe UK south of the Thames,

    Mark Evans, Managing Director

    of Mark David, said: Ballerina

is keen to expand its business

    in the UK and Churchman

approached us to see if we

    could work with them and

    Ballerina covering a large

    section of the UK.

    Ballerinas offering includes a

    drawer box system from

Grass with a variable width,24 colour carcases as standard,

    1,800 RAL lacquer colours,

four base unit heights and a

    choice of 450 doors across

    seven ranges.

    One of the Ballerina features

that stood out for me was

    its ability to produce digitally

    printed laminate to provide

    a similar service as book

    matching veneers, said

    Evans. This means that on

an island unit for example, the

    design on the doors, drawers

and side panels can follow allaround the island. There was

a striking example of this in

    the Ballerina showroom at its

    headquarters in Rodinghausen

and it will be one of the first of

the new displays Ill be putting

    in my showroom.

    Mark David expects to

    the bigquestion

Julie Stevens, Sales Designer,Hale and Murray, Poole:It is possible to include a tour of your showroom orfactory on your website. It seems a good idea but I dohave reservations though. If your website is that good, will it stop people from coming into your showroom andtouching and seeing the quality of the product and seeingthe items you do not have on display? All very well if yousell over the Internet, but if that is not the case, surely theidea is to get the customer through the door to show whyyou stand out from the rest.

Paul Leach, Interiors andProperty Photographer, Wakefield:I totally agree Julie. The last thing a website should do isover-expose the showroom. If they visit with a Google tour, they might think theyve seen it all.Prospective customers(as they often tell you) are just looking for ideas, looselytranslated as I dont know what I want. Great photography

inspires, motivates and enthuses, which needs to andmust increase showroom traffic. Poor photographywont. It just says we dont care enough.

Nehal McGregor, Design Consultant,Victor Paris Bathrooms, Glasgow:Creating an engaging and professional looking websiteis no longer an optional extra to a business strategy. Ireally struggle to identify with businesses that shy awayfrom spending money on professional photographers, copywriters and web designers to showcase theirbusiness online. You would not leave your showroomwindow cluttered and unwashed for ages, so why would

you leave your web window cluttered, unclean (notupdated) and shabby?

If I wanted to add 10 pages of high quality images, textsand products to my website, it can cost me up to 5,000 orless. This pales into insignificance if I start comparing it tothe cost of adding 10 premium bays to my showroom.

Although the market is competitive, I believe the Internethas made it possible for smaller businesses to competewith big suppliers who have thousands of square metersof showroom space. A responsible, savvy and wellresearched mix of mid-sized showroom space, an honestsocial media profile and a beautifully designed website isan ideal tool to stay ahead of the competition.

A number of new materials and styles

    SALICE.

    TITANIUM.WARMTH AND TECHNOLOGY: TITANIUM FINISH.

The new titanium finish perfectly integrates the hinge into the design of the cabinet conveying a sensation of warmth and

at the same time incorporating modern functionality. The colour, new and different compared with the traditional blued or

nickel-plated finishes, is less invasive and has a muted sheen. The titanium reflections make this hinge ideal in

combination with darker interiors and with the numerous shades of wood available. The good reflection properties and the

technological aspect of the hinge allow a perfect integration with the place where it is to be inserted, also suitable in the

lightest interiors. The corrosion strength is considerably increased compared to the classic nickel-plated finish.

    designer| hotel bathrooms

    www.designerkbmag.co.uk

Forprospective guests looking for a hotel, itused to be very much all about the bedroom.Photos on hotel booking sites used to focus

just on this aspect of the stay together withperhaps a neatly posed picture of the check-indesk but now, certainly for the top-end, thebathroom has taken on a new emphasis.

Darren Paxford, National Sales Managerat VitrA, says: In recent years, the expectationsfrom consumers on hotel bathrooms haverisen dramatically. Designers are faced withthe task of meeting these expectations, whilstalso considering the practicalities of a hotel

space and meeting a budget. Guests arenow looking for their bathroom to providethem with a luxury experience, whetherits the treat of a luxury duo walk-in monsoonshower, or an indulgently large bath.

He adds that the general look and style of thewhole space has to feel modern and decadentwith beautiful taps, striking mirrors and wowfactor vanity units and basins. Its easy to seehow much inuence this has on bookings, headds. You just have to look at hotel websites. Now many hotels will provide pictures and namethe brands of the key features found within theirbathroom as it can help luxury and boutiquehotels set themselves apart from chains, andattract discerning customers.

When it comes to the design approach, thereare certainly parallels between the hotel andresidential sectors. Georgina Spencer, MarketingManager at Roca, points out: The hotelbathroom has a lot in common with its domestic

counterpart, not just in terms of creating a spa-like, relaxing sanctuary, but also in creating anindividual nish with a sense of character thatsets them apart from the competition.

Just as bathrooms sell houses, rstimpressions of a hotel are very often won or lostin the bathroom, so its important that designersget the look and feel of this space spot on.

Consumers seem to be attaching a greater

importance to the role of the bathroom in thehome, not just for its functionality but also itsholistic benets for unwinding and retreatingfrom the stresses of modern day life.

Lynn Dale, National Sales Manager at KeramagDesign, says: Bathrooms are being designedto balance the practical needs of hopping in the

power shower before work with being a serenespace to have a leisurely soak in a statementbath. Ultimately, everyone wants to integrate theluxury experience that they get from a hotel stayinto their own home, with the ability to treatthemselves every day.

As well as the style points, there are of coursepractical issues that apply specically to hotelbathrooms too. David Osborne, ManagingDirector at Roman, says: Cleaning regulations in

hotels mean that bath screens must be cleanedfrom the outside without stepping into the bathand hotels have furniture alongside the baththerefore the bath screen needs to lock at 90degrees to avoid bathroom xtures and ttings.

It is for both practicality and aesthetic reasonsthat surface materials are a vital part of the hotelbathroom specication. Traditionally, for theluxury end of the market this has meant luxurystone and textured surfaces. However, there arenow real alternatives according to Stuart White,Managing Director at Bushboard. Laminate wallpanels have never been a stronger contender asa design choice than they are now because highdenition printing and surface texture innovationmeans that they can authentically mirrorthe look of real stone and marble, while alsooffering a signicant cost benet, no ongoingmaintenance and are easier and lightweight toinstall. The panels can also be tted in a truewetroom environment if desired, and withoutany distracting extrusions, which overcomes

for many designers what has historically been amajor drawback of laminate in bathrooms.

As the boundaries between high-end hotel anddomestic bathroom design continue to blur, consumers will increasingly be looking to replicatethe very best in holiday luxury in their own homes, raising the bar for designers everywhere. i

The latest incarnation of Artusi,Antonio Citterios

trailblazing industrial-style kitchen, has been adapted to

embrace a similarly professional range of appliances

    designer| kitchens

    Go

For the aspiring chef, there is nothingmore appealing than a professionalgrade kitchen in which to work. Today, the industrial look is nothing new, butwhen designer Antonio Citterio cameup with the Italia kitchen in 1988, it wasperhaps the first to bring professionalconcepts into the home.

Nine years on, Citterio took thatinitial idea and developed it further tocreate Artusi, a professional kitchenmanufactured by Arclinea whichaddressed the practical and hard-wearing principles of a restaurant

kitchen but refined into multipurposeautonomous work blocks in steel. At the heart of the design were highconstruction standards, understatedshapes and volumes, and ergonomics.

Over the years, Artusi has beenmodernised and updated in variousways. Conceived as a freestandingdesign, it evolved as a modular versionto become Outdoor in 2012 for (as thename suggests), cooking outside.

Its latest guise is as Artusi Gourmet,a kitchen system that integrates

professional grade appliances fromElectrolux Grand Cuisine. Thefurniture units have been remodelledto accommodate the key features of theappliances and to ensure a seamlessintegration between the kitchen and itstechnology.

Artusi Gourmet went on display forthe first time at Arclineas flagshipshowroom in Milan recently. Someof the key highlights include astove island, the frame of which canbe made to measure and can bespecified with finishes from the

the worktop can also be selected inother materials and finishes.

Other re-worked elements includea specially designed hood and a tallunit specifically made to house the

    Electrolux Grand Cuisine appliances.

The range is the latest in a long andproductive collaboration between themanufacturer and prolific designer

Citterio. My years working withArclinea have been dedicated toexperimentation with the concept of

the kitchen, starting with fine-tuningof a programme which could functionperfectly from an industrial designpoint of view and then, over the years, gradually studying the various types of

    kitchens, he explains.

From a space for socialisingto the professional island, from thecompact single unit to the functional

microcosm, each different interpretationoffers a living solution that blendsperfectly with its surroundings, the ideal expression of changesin todays homes.

Iinitially became a designer veryrandomly, admits Paris-based designerChristophe Pillet. Growing up, I was

like most kids and wanted to be amusician. I went to art school and spentthe time that I was there trying to workout what I really wanted to be.

I found myself faking being a designerand started drawing all sorts of thingssuch as chairs and other products. After afew years, people started believing I was adesigner and so I had to do it for real!

This journey of personal discovery forPillet was happening at a particularlyvibrant time for the world of designas it coincided with the emergence

of the Memphis group in the early1980s which included such luminariesas Ettore Sottsass, Matteo Thun and

Javier Mariscal to name a few. It wascharacterised by the bright colours,

asymmetrical shapes and kitschreferences of the numerous items offurniture and other objects producedbetween 1981 and 1988.

Pillet had been awarded his diplomafrom Domus Academy in Milan before

joining the Memphis group as assistantto Martine Bedin and Michele DeLucchi. He returned to Paris to work

with Philippe Starck before establishinghis own design agency in 1993.

It is a distinguished past that evennow seems to fill him with a sense of

bemusement about how it all came tobe. It was not a planned career. I feellike a tourist or a stranger in this realmof design and I mean that very sincerely.I am motivated by doing different

things, and if youre a tourist, you areinterested in discovering new thingsand exploring thats exactly what I amdoing with design, wandering aroundlooking for things that are different.

It is an approach that has led to designpartnerships that are many and varied.Clients have included Cappellini,Lacoste, LOral and Whirlpool. He

explains that many of the productshe has designed have come about asa result of a true collaboration ratherthan a simple design to commissionprocess. In many cases, they dont ask

me for a specific piece of furniture orproduct. We just agree that we want todo something together. I then do, notexactly just what I want, but what Ithink would be good for them.

When VitrA approached Pillet tocollaborate with them, he welcomedthe opportunity to work in an area ini

Above:40cm circular basin from VitrAs Memoria collection

    designer| interview

which he believes there is scope to donew things. The bathroom is a verychallenging area of the home, notnecessarily because of the individual

products themselves, but because of thedifficulty in changing things. For instance,if you want to change things in your livingroom, you can move or change your sofaor bring in other furniture. If you want to

change your bathroom you need to get ina designer or an architect and an installer,so it is much more complicated.

My thought then was to try to design

products that will address this andthat is something I have been thinkingabout since.

Central to these ideas for the future

is Pillets desire for the bathroom tobreak away from some of its existingconstraints he talks of an idea for aplug and play system for the bathroomto give the homeowner the opportunityto reconfigure the space easily without

it having to cost the price of a small car.For now though, the first fruits of Pilletscollaboration with VitrA is the Memoriacollection, an all-encompassing range

including basins, brassware andfurniture, created to help fill what he

believed to be a gap in the extensiveVitrA product catalogue: There wereso many great products there, but I feltthat it was missing some of the basics the t-shirt and jeans if you like.

Im also an interior architect and forme, I dont always look to use designerproducts. Its often a case of trying tofind good, low profile and more subtleproducts, so I suggested we go down

this route. I wouldnt even go as far asdescribing it as minimalistic becausethis in itself suggests some kind of loftyartistic intention. Rather, it is simple, silent and filling in some important gaps.

He sees this very much as a startingpoint to what will be a long-termpartnership: We are squaring the circlewith this collection to create a very

important set of products, but there arelots of other ideas for the future whichare still at the prototype stage.Pillet beieves that the bathroom productcategory could see the ongoing impact of

new technology more than most: With

some traditional type of furniture sofas

for example there is only so muchdifference that technology can make. Theform and function always remains broadlythe same. It is different for ceramic in thebathroom however. Here you can do lots

more work in making it thinner, differentshapes and colours, transference of heat, sustainability, so technology gives us areal capacity to potentially change theproducts that we have today.

And yet, this change could bearrested by a cultural inertia orresistance to change that can often be abig factor in maintaining the status quo.

We have a mental tradition both interms of the manufacturer, dealers andthe customer which is a limitation tothis capacity to change.

The bathroom is the only placewhere the product has remained whiteas it was when it was first manufactured200 years ago or so. The psychologicalidea of white being hygienic is not

really so relevant, but the fact isthat if a manufacturer makes othercolours, it does not sell.

It was like this for kitchen appliancesyears ago of course, but now you can buyblue, yellow or patterned refrigerators tosuit the whole kitchen design.

Pillet feels that the cultural inertia inthe bathroom and his belief that thisis related to the established built-innature of the space is an example ofthe questioning process that is at the

heart of the design process. He saysit is about asking the question of howshould we change things, why shouldwe change them, and what benefitswould it bring. For me, these are

the only questions for a designer toconsider. All the rest is just blah blah.

A lot of the time, I think about thesethings quite selfishly in terms of how I

would like things to be in the future, andby that I am talking about months intothe future not decades. It is importantto consider how we can improve theenvironment around us and make thingsbetter. This is the role of design, finding

these good reasons and not to changethings for the sake of changing them.Anything is possible, but thats not alwaysa good enough reason for doing it.

For a profession not always known forits modesty, Pillet has an interestingand matter-of-fact take on his role

as a designer. Were not inventinganything, he says. It is engineers whoinvent things and we are just wrappingtheir ideas. The work of a designer ismore about materialising or illustratingwhat life is about today or tomorrow.

He adds that even if he tried toimagine and design a house for theyear 3000, it would be nothing butscience fiction because there would be

so much that still needs to be inventedby engineers. It is useful for ourimaginations perhaps, but otherwiseit serves no purpose. I am interestedin changing things for the better

today. Im less interested in thetime after I am dead and gone.

So of his substantial design workso far, what is Pillets own favourite?

The reality for any designer is thatyoure not ever satisfied with whatyou have achieved, so I would alwayshave to say my favourite is the nextone Im working on because it is all

    about developing new things.

If I had to pick something frommy past work though I would say

the Agatha Dreams chaise longuethat I designed for Ceccotti. It stilllooks good to me and I think hasescaped time it could have beendesigned 20 years before or 20

years after. It doesnt belong toa particular trend of style.

As for future designs, Pillet hasno wish list of product types that

he would like to direct his skillstowards. What I like is meeting newpeople, going to new places andworking on new projects. Whetherit is a car, a hotel, a chair, the nature

of the product is not too important tome. I just like working on ambitiousprojects with ambitious people. d

A WORLDWIDE VISIONSara Wells, Regional Sales& Business DevelopmentManager, Doca UK

How important is the UKkitchen market to yourbrand right now and doyou perceive it to be agrowth market?

The UK is undoubtedly veryimportant to the kitchenmarket, as well as our ownbrand as I feel the designsector is led by globalinuences not just individuals. Not only London, but all majorcities within the UK contributeto the world stage of designand I very much believe wehave become instrumental tothis growing market.

Which other global marketsare key areas for yourbusiness at present, andwhich regions do youanticipate will be the hotspots of the future?

Doca UK is located inthe UK and serves onlythe UK market, however forDoca Spain we can say ithas seen important branddevelopment over the last fewyears with it moving into theNetherlands, northern Europeand Russia. That, along withprojects in New York andother areas of the USA has

not only boosted the brandbut also allowed it to completeon a global level.

When you actually look atthe buying pool as a whole, the world is quite small, especially when comparedto social mobility which isever increasing. As such, allmarkets relative to our brandare considered to ensure thatdevelopment, brand growthand continued cutting edgemanufacture remains for bothDoca UK and abroad.

pg55Germankitchen brand Alno has launched its new steel

kitchen range into the UK. The AlnoInox steel kitchen

has a sleek and elegant design, for a contemporary

kitchen that reects the industrial trend.

Low maintenance and scuff-proof, the powder coating

provides robustness and colour fastness, whilst the

non-porous steel surfaces repel grease, making them

particularly easy to clean. A cardboard honeycomb

between the 0.8mm steel sheets has been designed

to provide maximum stability and strength, allowing

the fronts and shelf boards to retain their shape

despite being relatively light. Alno adds that the

panels cannot be warped by moisture or temperature

changes as the material features high heat resistanceand is 100% humidity resistant.

The new range was launched by at Alnos

Wigmore Street showroom in Central London,

where the Gold AlnoInox kitchen is on display.

The launch party included various steel-themed

celebrations including a steel drum workshop.

AlnoInox is the rst product by Swiss kitchen

manufacturer AFG Kchen to be offered under the

Alno brand since Alno acquired the company at thestart of 2014. The full Alno collection offers a huge

choice of contemporary materials, colours and

nishes, with AlnoInox the newest offering.

The powder-coated surfaces are available in 22

standard colour options plus all Natural Colour

System (NCS) colours, allowing a combination of

warm and cool shades. Pictured is AlnoInox Gold.

I lovegood design andam constantly inspired bybeautiful new buildingsand objects. There areso many architects anddesigners who I admire somuch. However, the personwho I have picked for thiscolumn is one of the mostextraordinary in the designworld Sir Terence Conran.

When he pioneered thefirst Habitat store in 1964,it brought great Europeancontemporary design toEngland at prices that wereaffordable to the masses.Previously, great design hadbeen the preserve of therich and Habitat in its earlydays was revolutionary, bringing colour, simplicityand great design at pricesmost could afford.

Not only though did SirTerence become one of thegreat retailers, he was alsoa developer, transformingButlers Wharf on the South
