Russiahasalongtraditionofhostingwintersportstournaments,havinghostedanumberofWorldChampionshipsandthe1980OlympicGames.SochihasalsopreviouslyhostedinternationalsportingeventsandwillalsohosttheFormulaOneGrandprixfrom2014.
TheBlackSearesortofSochiintheKrasnodarregionwillhostthe22ndWinterOlympicandParalympicGames,undertheauspicesoftheSochiOrganisingCommittee(Soc).Therewillbebothacoastalcluster(Sochi)ofvenuesandamountaincluster(KrasnayaPolyana).Thelevelofdevelopmentforthe2014gamesismuchgreaterthanforthepreviouswintergameshostedbyCanada.
AnumberofleadingBritishcompanieswithexperienceoftheLondon2012deliveryarealreadyinvolvedinkeySochicontracts.ItwasannouncedinFebruary2011thatBritishcompaniesarealreadythelargestforeignsuppliertoSochi2014.SustainabilityhasbeenakeyfeatureoftheprocurementdriveforSochi.
ThecityofKazaninRussiawillalsohostthe2013UniversiadeGames.Thisisaninternationalmulti-sportevent,involvinguniversitystudentsfromaroundtheworld.About60%oftheseathletesgoontobecomeOlympiccompetitors,soitalsorepresentsamajoreventintheglobalsportingdiary.
Therun-uptotheSochiGameshasnotbeenwithoutcontroversy;therehavebeenongoingreportsofmafiainvolvementandcorruptionsurroundingtheawardingofkeyconstructioncontracts.However,Olympicevaluationreportsofprogresssuggestthattheschedulefordeliveryisnowlargelyontrack.

ThecoastalclusterconceptcentresroundtheconstructionoftheSochiOlympicPark,covering800hectaresandsituated25kmoutsideofSochicitycentre.TheOlympicParkwillincludeallicevenues,themainOlympicVillage,themainstadiumfortheOpeningandClosingceremoniesandtheInternationalBroadcastCentre.Allicevenuesarewithinwalkingdistanceofoneanother,meaningthatvisitorshavenotraveltimebetweeneventsandcanattendseveraldifferenteventsinasingleday.
TheKrasnayaPolyanamountainzonecontainsallthesnowandslidingvenues,anOlympicVillageandamediasub-centre.
TheMunicipalityofSochiextendsfromthecoasttothemountainzonethusencompassingallOlympicvenuesunderasingle,governingbody.
TheSochiWinterOlympicswillprovideacatalystforinvestmentintheBlackSearegion,withthelongertermaimoftransformingSochiintoayear-rounddestinationforbothdomesticandinternationaltourists.TheGameswillalsoresultinthedevelopmentofRussia’sfirstworld-classskiresortandprovideatrainingcentreforwintersportsintheregion.

Bytheendof2011,circa70%ofallvenueconstructionwascomplete.TheinvestmentbudgetforconstructionofvenuesisUS$806million,withafurtherUS$121millionontheOlympicVillages.

- SochiOlympicOvalwillbeusedforSpeedSkatingandcanaccommodate8,000spectators.ThisvenuewillbeusedasaconferenceandexhibitioncentreaftertheGames.
- IcebergSkatingPalacewillbeusedforseveraleventsincludingFigureSkatingandShortTrackSpeedSkating(12,000spectators).Thisvenuewillbecompletedbytheendof2012.Itcanbedismantledandre-usedaftertheGames.

• The12,500seatScottishHydroArena(basedatSECC,Anderston)willbehostvenuetotwoofthegamesevents.Situatedwestofthecitycentre,thearenawillhostthegymnasticscompetitionandnetballfinalsin2014.Itisduetoopenin2013.TheHydrowillbethelargestentertainmentsvenueinScotlandand,afterthegames,willplayhosttoaround140eventsperyear.ScottishHydrohascommittedtoinvest£1.5millionoverthenexttenyearsinfurtherdevelopingthevenue.
• CathkinBraesMountainBikingCircuit(MountainBikeVenue),CathkinBraesCountryPark.ThiswillbeGlasgow’sfirstinternationalstandardmountainbikingcourse.
Anumberofexistingvenuesarecurrentlyundergoingsubstantialupgrades/expansionfor2014:
• TollcrossAquaticCentre(SwimmingVenue).Theexpansionincludesanew6lane,50mwarm-uppool;5,000seats,ofwhich2,000willbepermanent,anewpoolsidecontrolroom,newfitness,healthanddancesuites,newchangingfacilities,newcommunityfacilities.BarrConstruction(Glasgowbased)iscurrentlyundertakingtheconstructionwork.TheprojectbeganinJune2011andwillcontinueuntilsummer2013.
• ScotstounLeisureCentre(SquashandTableTennisVenue).Thevenueupgradetakesplaceintwophases.BuildingworkontheadditionofanewsquashcentrebeganinApril2012.
• GlasgowGreenisthevenuefortheHockeyevents.OwnedbytheGlasgowCityCouncil,GlasgowGreenisclosetotheCityCentreneartheRiverClydeandistheoldestpublicparkinScotland.Newfacilitieswillinclude2syntheticfloodlithockeypitches/changingrooms;spectatorseatingfor5,000willbeavailableforthegames,ofwhich500willbepermanent.ConstructionworkswereduetostartinMarch2012,withthecontractawardedtoCityBuildinginGlasgow.
