DESIGN THINKING FOR LEARNING DESIGN
Robin BartolettiBryan HaufKim Meyer

Design thinking is an iterative activity that has broad
guidelines and no fixed process. What's more important
is that critical insights, sensitivity to user needs and
beautiful solutions come from the creative chaos
encouraged by unconstrained dialogue and tangible visual artifacts.

Prototype (converge) Test
Some phases of this process are either diverging or converging. During a diverging phase, you try to open up as much as possible without limiting yourself, whereas a converging phase focuses on
condensing and constraining to narrow in on specific ideas.

Use your empathy map base to: 1. Listen to the learner persona. 2. Interview. 3. Take notes on sticky notes. 4. Add stick notes to the empathy map.

What do they THINK? Try to outline what is in the mind of the user. What
really matters to them? What moves them? What are their dreams and
aspirations? What are their concerns?
What do they SAY and DO? What your user would say or do in public?
How do they behave in public? What do they say matters to them? What
are the differences between what they say and what they do? What are
some key quotes and defining words your user said? What are some key
things they did?
What do they FEEL? What are his/her biggest frustrations? What are the
obstacles between the what s/he wishes or tries to reach? What risks is
s/he ready to take? What does your client hope? What does s/he really
want? What are his/her essential needs? What is his/her idea of success?
What emotions might they be feeling?

Interview Methods
ASK WHY.
Then ask it again (and again).
STAY NEUTRAL.
Try to avoid correcting your interviewee or
offering up too much of your own
judgment.
SOLICIT STORIES ABOUT THE ISSUES.
“Tell me about the problem you have...”

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. CLUSTER YOUR FINDINGS. LOOK FOR PATTERNS.
DEFINE THE CHALLENGE:
“HOW MIGHT WE…” IS A QUESTION THAT MAKES A TANGIBLE STATEMENT OF WHAT IS TO BE SOLVED BY THE DESIGN CHALLENGE.
