This studio is on form, space and composition, employing architecture from the “outside-in” approach, with focus being placed on the form of architecture and its composition. An emphasis will be placed on the compositional aspects of spatial design, expression, language, intent, dynamics, etc. and their use as tools of concept and functional accommodation. Three-dimensional models play an important role in design development. Issues of meaning, message and symbolism will be discussed and applied. A critical method of working with architecture precedent though analysis of various works of architects, as well as contemporary design theory, will be reviewed and analyzed to be used as a premise for design

Project 1 Beyond Style - Learning to “Read” Architectural Language and Form

In order to move forward we must begin with those that have come before us. As a designer one

must learn to work with precedent and critically review the works of others, to appreciate the

issues at hand and digest the forms and languages used to address them. This project requires

taking on an architectural “role” of Bjarke Ingels and presenting an architecturally based critical

review and “reading of his work. After this preliminary review comes the design of a simple

contemporary residential building in the spirit of Bjarke Ingels, taking on their architectural persona

in the multi-dimensional context of the site.

Midterm Project Beyond Style - Learning to “Read” Architectural Language and Form

In order to move forward we must begin with those that have come before us. As a designer one

must learn to work with precedent and critically review the works of others, to appreciate the

issues at hand and digest the forms and languages used to address them. This project requires

taking on an architectural “role” of Herzog & De Meuron and presenting an architecturally based

critical review and “reading of his work. After this preliminary review comes the design of a simple

contemporary residential building in the spirit of Herzog & De Meuron, taking on their architectural

persona in the multi-dimensional context of the site.

Project 2 The Architecture of Expression

Our country has gone through unprecedented change over the past few months. Our University

was in the unique position to bear witness to the events, and consequently we have launched a

campus wide project titled “The University on the Square”. This initiative involves the collection of

artifacts, testimonials, images and artwork from the Egyptian Revolution of January 25th.

This project aims to experiment with the expressive qualities of architecture through form. Using

the revolution as inspiration to design a pavilion on the AUC Campus to house the archive collected

through the “University on the Square” initiative.

Page 15: Design Studio II

Site The site allocated for this pavilion is in the public access section of campus at the north-west end of

campus near the AUC Bookstore (as seen below).
