VEHICULAR TRAFFIC

What once was a simple cube is now a truncated cube due to external forces of the site. C irculat ion, percip itat ion and traff ic with in ,on and infront of the High Museum all influenced the form of the public exhibit hall. Pedestrian circulation across the courtyard causedthe south site to cave inward. Rain caused the roof to slope downward and the speed of the street traffic pushed the north s ide over.

Sneakers mean as much to New York Hipsters as a wedding ring does to a newly married couple. It is hard for either one of them to exist without the other. The desire to be wearing the “flyest” sneaker and looking the “freshest,” began in the 1970s with the release of the Converse All-Star basketball shoe, later to be better known as Chuck Taylors. This trend quickly became a culture that has risen to something that surpasses any and all other fashion trends, in New York City atleast. Taking cues from the basketball players pivots and turns, the structure twists along the central line, creating spaces in which patrons can view large portions of the entire museum.

The Ground Level and Level 1 are private spaces, open only to employees and specific guests. Level 2,and Level 5 are open to the public for recreation activities, specifically shopping and dining. Levels 3, 4 and 6 are open floor plans to accomodate any type of art exhibit that would be on display.
