Design One Project Two Shakespeare Advertisements You will produce a series of advertisements for a Shakespeare play. In the process you will explore theme and audience; visual and verbal communication; denotation and connotation. An effective ad campaign uses multiple platforms to persuade the audience to act. While the ads have a specific call to action (go see the play, buy the product), they also contribute to the overall awareness that people have of the brand. Ads must present original concepts because they must entertain the audience but they must also convey a sense of unity and promote positive associations with the brand. This will also be the first assignment where you will use color. Over the course of this project, we will discuss color theory and color philosophy. Consider how color may be manipulated to intensify the content of the advertisement and to maintain contrast and hierarchy. Process 1. Advertise a play using original imagery. -Use only original photographic imagery for your compositions -Do not rely solely on objects for your subject matter. Consider human interaction. -Consider subject, theme, metaphor, tone, symbolism, format. -Do not limit yourself to a single image per piece. Use multiple images to communicate. -Seek permission when photographing strangers or spaces that are not public. Many campus classrooms, labs and facilities (such as the theatre and music hall) are not free to access. 2. Clarify the information presented to the audience. -Carefully read and edit content supplied by client. -Research the subject completely to suplement the information provided. -Develop strategies to appropriately utilize text across three advertisements. -Avoid clichés. Be original! 3. Explore layout strategies for your ad. -Consider multiple arrangements of typographic and visual information. Experiment with type, image, color, scale, alignment, juxtaposition and hierarchy. -Consider how all of these layout elements will also convey a unified “image” of the brand 3. Create quick preliminary sketches to further generate ideas and potential solutions to the problem. Concentrate on visuals and their formal relationships. Test multiple layouts for each idea. Make layouts as distinct from each other as possible. -Choice/Refinement. Choose the most successful thumbnails and refine. Use the computer and work to actual size. Work quickly, printing out proofs and revising. Use both drawing and digital output at this stage, creating multiple layout concepts for your play. Begin to narrow your concepts down to the most successful. -Comprehensives. Perfect the advertisements chosen in critique. Complete digital comprehensives, experimenting and working towards final.

Design One Project Two

Shakespeare AdvertisementsYou will produce a series of advertisements for a Shakespeare play. In the process you will explore theme and audience; visual and verbal communication; denotation and connotation.

An effective ad campaign uses multiple platforms to persuade the audience to act. While the ads have a specific call to action (go see the play, buy the product), they also contribute to the overall awareness that people have of the brand. This will also be the first assignment where you will use color. Over the course of this project, we will discuss color theory and color philosophy. Consider how color may be manipulated to intensify the content of the advertisement and to maintain contrast and hierarchy.

Final Presentation1.Critique and comprehensives provide basis to work up completed project.

-2 final advertisements will present a single play. Formats will be: a poster, and a “leaderboard” web banner ad.-Use only original photography as source material.-Complete layout in Adobe InDesign. Use support software such as Photoshop for image manipulation.-Finals will be in color and must be trimmed to 16x10", and 10x1.25".-Mount each on a separate black board with a 1" border on the top and sides and 1.5" at the bottom. -Work must be covered with a stiff paper cover flap.-Affix a label to the back of each mounted work, in the bottom left hand corner, as indicated below.

2. Printing. Plan Ahead! To print in color, you will have to use a service bureau.-Local places include: Presentation Lab in Polk Library, OfficeMax, FedEx Office, Copy This, and DPI Printing. There are also bureaus in Appleton and surrounding communities.-Organize your files, fonts and proofs.-Test printers and work with same bureau for consistent results. Print proofs of projects to match colors. Be aware of hours of operation and lead time. Printers will back up and break down when an entire class needs to print at once.-Projects are due on the date announced. There will be no exceptions or extensions made for printing or access problems.

Project Two Schedule

Sept 23 Project Two Introduced. Homework: Research. Fifty drawn advertisement concepts for your play. Experiment with image,

typography, and layout. Read pages 20–23: Theories of Image and Text and 24–25: Audiences, Markets, Concepts Respond to questions (below) in your workbooks.

Sept 25 Due Today: Ad Concepts. Research. Contact Sheets. Discussion of Critique Handout. Homework: Shoot a minimum of 100 images for your ads, based on your sketches.

Write two critiques of magazine advertisements. A positive critique of one ad and a negative critique of another. Each critique must be typed and a minimum of 300 words. Attach the ad to the critique. Use the Meggs handout as a guide. Read pages 88–95: Fundamentals of Color ; 124–127: Preparing Files for Print; 132–135: Printed Color and Print Media Respond to questions (below) in your workbooks.

Sept 30 Due Today: Magazine Ad Critiques and contact sheets in AC215. Homework: Color comprehensives of 3 advertisements.
