BA DFI graduates old and new will identify with the idea that we teach a way of seeing and thinking. There is no ‘house style’ there is no ‘one size fits all’! BA(Hons) Design for Industry graduates are bespoke creations; each individually shaped using the finest raw materials and a little Northumbria know-how.

This year’s graduates are the perfect example of this. They demonstrate a breadth of individual interests and skills that reflect the breadth of development within our profession. From systems and services to medical products and luxury goods there are projects of all shapes and sizes. But look beneath the finished article at the processes and approaches adopted in their creation. These are graduates for whom the journey is as important as the destination – an asset in any organisation. They have gone beyond the obvious in pursuit of the best solution, developing not only their ideas but their approaches along the way.

In the four years that we have had the privilege of helping them, they have grown as individuals and as designers, as team-players and as leaders, they have shown initiative and taken advice and they have brought together their collective experience in this book so that you can see what they’re made of!

The students exhibiting in this year’s degree show will be the 30th group to have graduated from the Design for Industry course at Northumbria University.

The quality of their work is a fitting celebration of this anniversary and the exhibition bears testimony not only to their considerable achievements as students of Industrial Design but also to the diversity of Industrial Design itself.

This year’s show demonstrates better than ever the breadth of the subject and the virtuosity of today’s graduates. The user-centred approach to design that is at the heart of the course is evidenced through a whole spectrum of final year major projects. These range from domestic consumer goods and capital equipment, personal products and new media to the design of systems and services to deliver healthcare and communication.

Over the years both the profession and the course have evolved massively. The digital revolution has changed not only the character of the products we design but also the methods we use to design them. The scope and influence of the Industrial Design profession has never been greater or more effective than it is today.

Industrial Design education in Newcastle upon Tyne can trace its origins back to a College of Art in the mid ‘50s but it was not until 1975 that the 4-year BA(Hons) Design for Industry course was introduced with the notion of combining industrial experience with design education. Since then the course has produced well over a thousand graduates who have gone on to take significantly influential roles in design, business and education, many becoming the most distinguished in their field.

For me personally it is the end of an enjoyable 34-year association with the course. As a profession we are little more than three generations from our frontier. Most of the pioneers who taught me were not trained as industrial designers because for them no courses were available. They were architects and engineers with intuition and a passion for intelligent and sensitive design in manufactured objects. That same passion and enthusiasm lives on in our teaching staff at Northumbria and their graduates in this book. I wish them and the Design for Industry course every success in the future.

Major ProjectPurelytime

Whenever you feel exhausted remember to care for your clock, as eventually it will be as unbalanced as your life. To touch the time, hold it, treasure it; engage with it. These emotional connections provide you with a sense of satisfaction: a sense of the fact that you are truly ‘holding your time’. However, by adding water to balance the time, you will refine and balance your focus of life and time.

Imagia is a “serious” object that becomes playful once it is turned on. By using a camera, a small projector and the processing power of a mobile phone, Imagia augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. The interfaces and application presented are developed aiming at children between 5 to 8.

Major ProjectUkulele

The ukulele is an instrument that has been around for many years, and in all that time improvements or updates to the design have been few and far between.

The ukulele has always sold quite well and due to many schools now teaching the instrument the market has expanded even further. This design brings the ukulele up to date with current technologies and styling, to create a product that will do well in a market that is lacking variation.

Major ProjectForia

Foria is an intimate range for women. Giving intimacy, sensuality and removing the stigma that is attached to current sex aids. The intention of the range came from questioning how much we can give the consumer. What do they want that they cannot get from each other? Major Project100

100 is a personal exploration of the idea of craft production. Craft is a term often associated with one of a kind, hand made objects. Production suggests a level of automation more relevant to design for the mass-market.

Primarily the aim was to design and present a range of three objects, 100 units of each would be locally produced. The range had to stay true to the heritage of craft whilst taking advantage of automated production processes.

An holistic environment and economic approach has been established on the basis of integrating sustainable and environmental development with a long-term flooding strategy and consideration of future modes of living. Conceptually the site is conceived as a necklace of islands, which extend the historical waters edge and is connected by the river. The community islands are developed on the basis of short walking distances and transport nodes, and around local amenities that double as energy providers.

When I was a student in Newcastle the quayside area was

‘crumbling’ but interesting. Gateshead was the town over

the river and although joined by bridges, the road systems

prohibited any pedestrian cross river movements.

We once interviewed an old chap in Gateshead who

referred to Newcastle as ‘the town over the bridge’ but had

never been there. To see the area now is an inspiration and

the impact of the new bridge shows how design and ‘joined
