1) Methods of Construction:

i) Concrete Batching Plant on Floating Platform

Two nos. of Floating batching plant are stationed at Main Navigation area.

Each concrete batching plant is able to store approximately 1500m.cu of sand andaggregates.

The batching plant is equipped with 8 numbers of 100 tons of admixtures storage tank and800 tons of admixtures.

ii) Pre Cast Reinforced Concrete Shell

Used as a formwork for second layer casting andpermanently incorporated into the pile cap

6 pieces of Precast Shell is required for each pilecap.

Total of 3,336 nos of precast RC shells will be used

Casting and Curing carried out in the Casting Yard

Transported to Temporary Jetty and delivered toworksite by Barge.

Two casting yards for production

Total 27 sets of precast mould consist of 18 sets of9m dia. and 9 sets of 10m dia.

The advantage of using precast RC shell is due to itsfaster construction, easier handling and better surfaceFinishing works.

iii) Pile Cap for Bored Pile Section

The existing bored piling working platform is re-used as pile cap soffit

The construction of pile cap at P292-P283 uses the sinking method which is much fastercompared to the cofferdam method

iv) Steel Fender

The Bored pile drilling platform will be considered as the fender platform

Steel fender will be considered as side fender

The steel fender casing is in rectangular shape

The installation of side steel fender will be carried out by a 300t floating crane.

The steel fender casing will be lowered down by mechanical jacking system with capacityof more than 100t

Steel Fender vs Man-made Island

Steel Fender Man-made Island

i) Easy to construct, requires lessdredging, hence shorter construction period

i) Difficult to construct & much longer construction period

ii) Compact thus does not restrict the navigation passageway

ii) Occupy larger water area, restricting navigation passageway

iii) Low impact on the environment and existing hydrological condition due to its relatively small size

iii) Dredging and sand taking greatly damage environment

v) Steel Mould for Pier and Crosshead(Approach Span)

The bridge consists of 576 nos. of Piers i.e. P0(L/R) toP292 (L/R)

Piers are classified as Low (max height 6m) andHigh Piers (> 6m to 27.8m) from top of pile cap to topof crosshead - using self climbing formwork.

496 nos. of low piers to be constructed using onecontinuous set installation of pre fabricated steelformwork from pier to crosshead.

80 nos. of high piers constructed using layer of prefabricated steel Pier modules – installed, cast, removedand installed for the next layer. Process is repeated untilcrosshead level is reached.

The crosshead forms are erected, fixed, cast andremoved

To be constructed using one continuous setinstallation of prefabricated steel formwork fromcolumn to crosshead
