What is poetry?

The dictionary defines it as…

► ‘Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices to evoke an emotional response’.

► Therefore, can songs be seen as poems and are musicians in fact poets? Bob Dylan has been nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature every year since 1996.

Task

Think of some musicians who you would consider to be in fact poets. Their songs must mean something, they must have a message. Write down any songs that you would consider to be in fact poems.
