Came across a query you had written. I have some info on Celia Bunch and Henry Fletcher and somenotes from a Reverend Taylor taken from Roll 8, Hancock County, TN, Misc Records. These paperswere sent to me and I would like to find these records and see what else is in them about others inHancock Co.My line in this family is through Celia's sister Polly who married George Washington Pridemore. Theywere my g-g-g-grandparents.It lists the children of Henry Fletcher and Celia as Dan, John Jesse and Ben who married his firstcousin Harriet Pridemore. It also speaks of Ben Fletcher, when he was 80 years old was raided bysheriff Fote Johnson and Old Wallace Mullins as he was calling his hogs to slop one day. From the indoI have it seemed that he had a moonshine still and got caught and taken to trial in Sneedville, about1924. They took the still and the worm as he begged for them not to take and destroy it since it hadbelonged to his father (Seemed to have been a family tradition).I also have a list of Celia's siblings and parents and who they married, And even Rec. Taylor'scomments that these people were (meaning the Bunch family) pure white blood, it seems, and the oldermembers of the Bunch family were fair skinned until they mixed with the part Indian population of themountains of Tennessee.

Henry owned two farms when he died, He lived at Kyle's Ford,Hancock County,Tennessee. (Source:Frances Hickey)

Reverend Taylor's Notes: Hancock County, TN, Misc. Records

Benjamin (Ben) Bunch b.ca 1760-70, Several families named Bunch livedin Hawkins County (Hancock was cut from Hawkins) but we don't know forsure if they were related closesly or not. Likely they were, to causeBen to move there from NC and marry a small woman named Mary Dotson,b. ca 1768-70. She lived to be 110 dying seemingly of old age, after Ben died, she lived with her daughter Polly (Bunch) Pridemore, back of Boyd's Gap on

Newman's Ridge, toward Kyle's Ford. They moved to Tennessee when Frankiewas a young woman. Aunt Cynthia Collins (grandmother of Grace, Lillian, etc.)remembers making shirts for grandfather Ben and taking food to grandmotherMary after his death. Old Rev. Greenbrier Wallen preached grandmothers Mary'sfuneral 1869-70, sitting down to preach, from the text: "But Mary hath chosenthe better part, which shall not be taken away from her". Luke 10:22. These peoplewere pure white blood, it seems, and the older members of the Bunch familieswere fair skinned, until they mixed with the part Indian population of theMountains of TN.

Children of Ben and Mary:1. Lambert b. 1780-1790 ? stayed in NC.2. William or Bill b. 1783-1793, stayed in NC.3. John b. 1785-95, stayed in NC.4. George b. 1787-9?, stayed in NC.5. CELIA b. 1795-1815 m. Henry Fletcher of Fox Branch.6. Hannah b. 1795-1815 m. Jesse Goodman and lived in Blackwater.7. Rachel b. 1795-1815 m. Bill Goodman, brother to Jesse (Hannah's man) lived on Newman'sRidge.8. Polly b. 1795-1820 (called Aunt Polly Pridemore) m. Washington "Wash" Pridemore. Lived onNewman's Ridge, big family. (My g-g-g-grandparents).9. Frankie Bunch b. 1795-1820 m. Symen or Simeon Collins.10. Sallie b. ? m. Jesse Bunch and moved to Indiana.

HENRY FLETCHER: b. ca 1800 m. to CELIA (BUNCH) #5 above- children of Henry and Celia:1. Dan b. ca 1830-402. John Jesse b. ca 1830-40 married in Kentucky.3. Ben b. 1840-45 d. about 1924 married his first cousin, Harriet Pridemore (who was born9/27/1859) married in Feb. 1877 or 1878. Had nine children.Ben Fletcher- when he was about 80 years old was raided by sheriff Fote Johnson and old WallaceMullins as he was calling his hogs to slop. The younger men present ran, but poor old Ben couldn'tescape but was taden with his still and worm. He plead for the still not to be taken or destroyed, for itwas his fathers old still and he didn't want it taken. He was taken to Sneedville to his trial, and old man, around 1924. Remember these people seemed to think perfectly proper to make moonshine. We mustnot judge them by our more recent standards of morals.

My line goes back thru Plly Bunch and Washington Pridemore. George Washington Pridemore andLucinda Boling, James Bowlin and Margaret "Peggy" Collins. Where I am stuck and have been forSeveral years.

I have more info I am mailing to you but wanted to send this for now and let you know I hadn't for gotabout you.Sincerely,Debbie Oxford

The Lexington Herald, Lexington, Ky., Wednesday, November 11, 1970"What’s In Your Name?"By Charles Guarino & Albert Seddon In all ages and in all quarters of the world distinguishing symbols have been adopted by tribes ornations, by families or by chieftains. When true heraldry began in Europe nothing was more remarkablethan the suddenness of its development, the duration of its use and the accuracy of its record. Coats ofarms and all that went with them covered a period of approximately seven hundred years. One of thevery first coats of arms to appear on record was that borne by the name Fletcher. This was because itwas granted to a man who was involved with one of the most ancient of trades, that of attaching thefeathers to the arrow shart. The Fletcher name began as a surname in Somerset at the end of the 1100’s and then spread to manyparts of England, Scotland and Ireland. The name has a turbulent history and we find Fletchersrecorded in historical documents in the most unlikely places. The famous Scottish politician AndrewFletcher who was born in 1655 is found in Holland creating havoc against measures introduced by theDuke of Lauderdale. Giles Fletcher born in 1548 is mentioned in Russian history books and we alsofind his name prominent in Denmark. There were many odd reasons why people were granted coats of arms in ancient times. Some of thestories can be catigorized under the heading of legend that in 1568 Henry Fletcher of Cockermouth wasgranted a coat of arms for having entertained Mary, Queen of Scots on her journey to Carlisle. How heentertained her is not recorded. The word Fletcher derived from the Old French “flechier” and the feathers used on the arrow shaftswere called “fleches.” Simple as it might seem the job of making an effective arrow was dividedbetween three tradesmen. One made the gead from metal, another made the shaft from selected andattached the feathers. The cost of arms we have selected from the many granted to the name shaws a silver shield on whichis a red “saltire” (a diagonal cross usually representative of the cross of Saint Andrew). On the shieldare four black circles charged with four silver arrow heads with the points downwards.(Interested in your name? If you would like to see the history and arms of your name in a future column, write to “What’s In Your Name?” care of The Lexington Herald.)

Dear, GLADYS

I know you will be suprised to get this letter, first i will tell you i am your Aunt Flora Belle, wife of your mother's oldest brother BEV. But MARY was more like a sister to me. We loved each other like sisters. I was so glad to get your address and some how i wanted to write you. I have pictures of you and DUTCH when you were babies. Dutch was up to our house one time with BERTHA when she (DUTCH) first got married. Well we have 7 children from 27 years old down to 6 years old and we have 4 grand children. My oldest daughter LORRAINE is 23 years old but not yet married. She works in the Loan Company office where her dad (your Uncle BEV) works, has worked for 34 years in the Champion Paper and Fiber Company. My two sons work there too. I will send you some more pictures as soon as i hear from you. I believe you would be proud of these 7 cousins and like them if you knew them. Bragging aren't I ? Ha! Ha!.

20

But i have always wanted to be with MARY's children more and so would all of her relation, but some how things just always don't turn out like we want them to. We went down to Manchester about a month ago just for 3 days. You see i have been out here since i married in 1920, I was 17 years old then. I lived in Manchester 5 years before i married your Uncle BEV. You see my folks died when i was a baby and Mom (your aunt MARTHA and step Grandma is my foster mother, she raised me.). I am going to Corbin,Kentucky to see some of my relation that i have never seen before. I have a sister in Florence,Kentucky and a brother in West Virginia and i love going to see them since we found each other. BERTHA and BERT was up to our house not long ago. I loved Aunt MARY ELLEN HYDE lots, she was always good to me. Enough about me and mine. I wanted you to come visit us as soon as you can and as soon as we get a house. We are living upstairs over CARL our eldest son, just till spring when the kids school is out. We want to get a farm. I guess you have heard from the folks back home by now about selling your Grandpa's and Mom's place. Well GLADYS its about 20 acres of hills and gullies. No coal, its been sold and no timber to speak of and BEV says no one else will pay as much as this man for it so he thinks they should sell it while the can get a little out of it. All the children want to sell while they can, even tho it isn't worth much it will be worth less. Well i must get to work, i know you are tired of trying to read this so write me when you have time and i would love to have some pictures any you have to spare. So i will close with lots of love.

Your Aunt FLORA BELLE,

MRS. BEVERLY HOUSE 871 Symmes Avenue Hamilton,Ohio (OVER)

All 7 of my children are curly haired, 5 brown eyed and 2 blue eyed. BEV says they get the curly hair from the HOUSE side.

Following are the full birth-dates for the Horton children. I also want to make a correction on what I sentto you yesterday. I listed Major Price Horton but that rank should have gone to Ira David "Bud". Iapologize for this error.

I have attached a couple pictures. Some pics may be quite large so let me know if they take too long todownload. I will find the originals and rescan them. I will send more after I hear from you. These threeare of Daisy; one with George and one with my brother, Eddie.

Sue

The Horton's were a closed mouth bunch. I knew nothing about the Horton's or House's until I begandabbling in the family tree a couple years ago. My Aunt Grayce is still living. She is 88 and quite feeblenow. I didn't know that my Granny (Daisy) had brothers and sisters when I was young. Needless tosay, the family tree has really blossomed into quite an unexpected large family.

I will double check all the info on the House line to see if I have anything different from yours but it looksabout the same. I did note that you have George Horton as dying in Clay County but he actually died inHamilton Co., OH.

Here is some of the Horton info I have: I also have a few pics of the Horton children and of Daisy... Doyou have any of the House line?

Hello,

I have checked for any children born to Myrtle or Dutch HYDE having PHILPOT children from just priorto 1940 up through 1960 and found none in the State of Kentucky.

BIRTH RECORDS:HYDE, Dutch b. 4-27-1921 in Harlan Co.; Vol. 038, Cert 18801; maiden name of mother: Mary HOUSE

HYDE, Marye b. 1-11-1919 in Harlan Co.; Vol. 4, Cert 1831; maiden name of mother: Mary HOUSE

There are too many Elmer PHILPOTS to know which one he may have been. There is a 1914 born inKnox; a 1913 born in Taylor Co.; a 1915 born in Clay Co.; and a 1914 born in Laurel Co. Eventuallythere is a Soc. Sec. Index listing for a Elmer PHILPOT b. 6-6-1914; died in Sept 1982 in Knox Co. and Ibelieve I saw one other one died in Orange Co., Indiana.

The 1920 Harlan Co. Fed. Census shows:Dwelling 39-40HYDE, Loyd, head, 25, b. kY; parents b. kY - miner. . Mary, wife, 19, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Gladis, dau, 11 mo's, b. KY; parents b. KY

Dwelling 40-41 - 1920 HarlanHYDE, Hugh, head, 47, b. KY; parents b. KY - Coal mine teamster. .Mary E., wife, 45, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Bertha, dau, 14, b. KY. .John, son, 9, KY. .Carlo, son, 7, KY

There are NO HYDE/HIDE families in Harlan Co. as of the 1910 Fed. Census. I generally think of

32

HYDE as a Clay Co. name so I will look there next.

1910 Clay Co.Dwelling 38-39HYDE, Hugh, head, 38, mar. 1, mar. 20 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Mary E., wife, 38, mar. 1, mar. 20 yrs, 6 born; 5 living, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Loyd, son, 16, single, KY * *. .Lilly, dau, 14, KY. .Bertha, dau, 6. .John H., son, 9 mo's, KY

1930 Harlan Co., Dist IDwelling ____HYDE, Hugh, 58, mar. at 19, b. KY - coal tipple laborer. . Mary, 55, mar. at 16, b. KY. .Carlo, 17, son, KY. .Gladys, 11, "grandau", b. KY* *. .Mertle, 9, grandau, b. KY * *

NOTE: Looks like the parents have both disappeared and the grandparents are raising these children.

You may or may not be aware but as of the 1900 backwards, your family is now listed as a "Black"family or a Mulatto family. This could be possible OR. . . it may well be that the family is darker skinnedand are actually Native American . Generally speaking, the census enumerator will show them as B orM vs. Native American. In KY, I think ONLY one time have I EVER seen anyone listed as Indian andnever as Native American which was not the terminology of the times.

1900 Clay Co.Dwelling 630-650HYDE, Hugh, head, B, b. 12-1873, 26, mar. 9 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Maryland, wife, B, b. 1-1876, 24, mar. 9 yrs, 4 born; 3 living, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Lloyd, son, B, b. 10-1893, 6, KY. .Lulu, dau, B, b. 3-1896, 4, KY. .Ella, dau, B, b. 10-1899, 7 mo's, b. KY

There are other HYDE families living all together. I think this is probably the father of Hugh:

Dwelling 634-654HYDE, James, head, B, b. 2-1840, 60, mar. 36 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY - farmer. .Mary J., wife, WHITE, b. 3-1845, 55, mar. 36 yrs, 8 born; 8 living, b. TN; parents b. TN. .Nellis, dau, W, b. 7-1881, 18, KY. .Rose, dau, b. 7-1886, W, 13, b. KY. .Frank, son, b. 11-1891, W, 8, b. KY

1870 Clay Co.Dwelling 118-124HYDE, James, MM, 37, b. KY; parents b. KY. .Mary J., MF, 32, wife, b. kY; parents b. KY. .George, MM, 16, son, KY. .Lucy, MF, 12, dau, Ky. .Hugh, MM, 10, son, KY * *. .Robert, MM, 6, son, KY. .Marha, MF, 4, dau, KY

Per marriage records: Mary J. WARD mar. James HYDE on 12-29-1863 in Clay Co.

I don't see the family as of the 1870. However, going backwards to the 1860, this "could" be JamesHYDE/HIDE:

Dwelling 73

33

STUART, Caleb, 56, b. England - Cooper (mar. lst to Elsy IVEY mar. 4-2-1833 in Clay Co.; file 6 andthen married 2nd to a Clarinda HIDE on 7-28-1859 in Clay Co., File 12). . Clarinda, 40, b. Clay Co.. .Elizabeth, 11, b. Clay Co.. .James, 19, b. Clay Co. - farm laborer * * *. .Ellender

I have no further information on this Clarinda or her first husband.

Notes for RODNEY HOUSE:

Served in the U.S. Army from 11 Sept 1946 to 20 Aug 1949.Army serial # RA15-227-607,14 Jun 1949 wasreduced in grade to PVT from PFC,Went Fort Knox,Kentucky for Basic Training, while at Fort Knox hetrained as a Medium Tank Crewman, qualified as Carbine M-2 Sharpshooter. After Basic Training was sent to Korea on 29 Nov 1946,attached to the 7th Infantry Division 1947,returnedfrom Korea on 26 Sep 1948.The remaining time in service he was stationed at Fort Lewis,Washingtonassigned to the 72nd Heavy Tank Battalion,Company B. He received the following decorations: WWIIVictory Medal and the WWII Occupational Medal (Korea).(Source:U.S. Army form WD 53 & childhoodfriend A.J. Jones)

A.J. JONES and my father joined the Army 11 Sept 1946,my father and A.J. JONES lied about their age toget in. My father told the Army that he was born 13 Nov 1928 when actually he was born 13 Nov 1930. A.J.JONES said that WILLIAM and NORA HOUSE signed my fathers paperwork to go in,but his parents wouldnot,so he forged their signatures. The two of them were sent to Fort Knox Army Post in Kentucky for Basic Training. When they got therethey were sent to Camp Atterbury in Indiana for 4 or 5 days for inprocessing(paperwork),then they were sentback to Fort Knox,Kentucky to do Basic Training. After Basic Training they were sent home toPathfork,Kentucky for 30 days leave before they went on their assignments. After their leave was over they went to Chicago, took a train from Chicago to Camp Stoman, which waslocated near San Francisco,California. They arrived 3 days ahead of their scheduled reporting time, they hadspent all of their money (A.J. said my father spent his and most of A.J.'s). A.J. said they were a little green andshould have known better to have reported early for their assignment, but they did any way with no place togo. When they reported the Commander changed their orders, instead of going to Japan to be apart of theOccupation Forces after WWII like they were supposed to, they were sent to Korea. Since Japan had occupiedKorea during the war and had to give that land up when the United States defeated them. The United Statessent Occupational Forces to Korea also. So they were on their way. They traveled by ship from San Francisco to Korea, which took several weeks. A.J. JONES said that myfather saved his life while on the ship. He had gotten very sick and it was very cold,so my father took care ofhim and got him to a doctor when one was available. They landed at Inchon, which is northwest of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of South Korea. They took atrain from Inchon, which took 8 hours to a place called Yong Dong Po. A.J. JONE said it was very cold andthey didn't have much to keep them warm except a fire which they started in a barrel on the train. My fatherkept a funeral notice of many G.I.'s that died in a train wreck several weeks after he had traveled on that verysame train. The train tracks were sabotaged and the train jumped off the tracks, killing those G.I.'s. It wreckedsomewhere near Taejon. When they reached Yong Dong Po(A.J. said they had a nice Hotel with Mineral Baths at Yong Dong Po.)they were sent to a place called Camp An Yang, there they were assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th infantry of the7th Division. My father was assigned to Company A and A.J. JONES to Company B as a cook. Their job jobwas to protect a Supply Depot called ASCOM. there was a Company of Black soldiers who were supposed tobe guarding the Supply Depot, but instead they were stealing a lot of supplies,so they sent my fathers and

40

A.J.'s Companies to pull guard duty. Each Company would alternate watching the area,so A. J. and my fatherdid not get to see a lot of each other. My father departed Korea 26 Sept 1948, two years before the Korean conflict would start. This was 6month's before A.J. would leave Korea,so that was the last they would see of each other in the service. A.J.stayed in the service until after the Korean War. From Korea my father finished out his military service in FortLewis,Washington. He was assigned to 3rd Ind Headquarters, 2nd Infantry Division, 72nd Heavy TankBattalion, Company B. He was a Medium Tank crewman. He was Honorably Discharged from Active Military Service on 20 Aug 1949. He qualified as a M-2Carbine Sharpshooter and received the WWII Victory Medal and the WWII Occupational Medal (for servicein Korea) One year later war broke out in Korea, splitting into North and South Korea
