She was there married to S.R. Darland, Nov. 19, 1844, by Elder Aaron Harland. Moved from there to Iowa, where they lived until 1865 when they moved across the plains by ox team and settled in Marion Co., Ore., where they resided until 1876 when they moved to Washington, Klickitat Co., where they have since made their home until her death. She was the mother of 16 children, 11 girls and 5 boys, 2 girls died in infancy, 2 more girls have since gone before her. She leaves an aged husband and 12 children to mourn her loss. She died while sitting in her arm chair without apparent struggle, on Jan. 4th at 4:30 p.m. and was 71 years, 1 month and 23 days old at the time of her death. She professed a hope in Christ in 1865 and united with the Old School Baptist Church, and lived a devoted christian life, trusting only in her Savior, Jesus Christ. Our loss was her gain, for she has gone to her Heavily home where pain and sorrow cannot come. And may we all be as willing and well prepared to go as she was and may we be able to say in heart God's will be done not ours. Elder J.E. Adams officiated at the cemetery where she was laid to rest at Spring Creek and a host of friends were there to pay their last respects to the departed and mourn her loss. Isaac C., Charles B., and Mrs. Mary Baker reached here in time for the funeral, the rest of the absent children being unable to get here. Oh, call it not death, 'tis life begun, For the waters our past and the race is won, The ransomed spirit but reached the shore, Where they weep and suffer and sin no more. She is safe in her Father's house above, In place the place prepared by her Savior's love, To depart from this world of sin and strife And to be with Jesus, yes, this is life. Her funeral will probably be preached in Goldendale next Sunday. We wish to thank the many kind friends for the kindness shown us in this our time of trouble. A friend in time of need is a friend indeed. He married (2) LIDA M. KURTZ Jun 1884, daughter of JOHN KURTZ and ELIZABETH ?. She was born Abt. 1860 in Minnesota, and died 25 Nov 1900. Notes for ISAAC CALVIN DARLAND: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.klickitat/265 An Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima and Kittitas Counties, Interstate Publishing Co., Chicago, IL., 1904 Pg 399 ISAAC C. DARLAND, of Goldendale. Wash., traveling salesman for the Gaar-Scott Company, in charge of the Spokane territory for the firm, was born in Warren county. Illinois, December 30, 1840. His father, Samuel R. Darland, was a farmer of the state of Indiana, born in November, 1825. He came west to the Willamette valley, Oregon, in 1865, crossing the Plains with mules and horses. During this trip the entire outfit was captured by the Indians near Fort Hallock, after a fierce encounter in which some were killed on both sides. He came to Klickitat county in 1876, and died June 18, 1903. The mother of our subject was Susanna (Hutton) Darland, a Kentuckian, born in 1829. She crossed the Plains with her husband in 1865, and died December 4, 1900. Our subject was seventeen years old when he came west with his parents across the Plains, and he was one of a posse of emigrants, and a detachment of soldiers from Fort Hallock, that followed the Indians who attacked their wagon train and stole all his father's horses and mules. An engagement took place within a couple of miles of the fort, resulting in much loss on both sides, but while the Indians were brought to terms, they had in some mysterious manner spirited away the stolen stock, which was never recovered. When the boy was seventeen, he gave his father $200.00 to let him remove from home and start out in the world for himself, and when a little over twenty-two years of age he removed to Klickitat county, where he settled permanently the following year. At the time he came to the county there was no city of Goldendale, but the place was named the same winter for the original founder, John J. Golden. For twenty years after his arrival he followed farming and stock raising, having taken up a homestead and bought a band of cattle the first year of his residence. From 1893 to 1896 he traveled for the Advance Thresher Company. He was appointed postmaster of Goldendale by President Cleveland, in 1893, the

duties of the office being attended to by his wife and son. About this time he invested heavily in the Farmers' Mercantile Company, and lost a large amount of money thereby. After leaving the employ of the Advance Thresher Company he was with the Buffalo Pitts Company for two years, traveling throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho. He then became connected with the Gaar-Scott Company, in whose service he still is. Mr. Darland was married in 1871 to Sarah A. Hawse, a daughter of one of the old Oregon pioneer families. She was born on the plains of the Snake river, while en route to Oregon, and died in 1882, leaving four children, Arminta A., now deceased; Merton A., now employed in Baker Brothers' store at Goldendale; Earl W., at Mohler, Idaho, and L.C., deputy in the treasurer's office at Goldendale. Mr. Darland was married a second time in June, 1884, the lady being Lida M. Kurtz, a native of Minnesota. Her parents removed to California when she was quite young. She was of German descent on her father's side, and her mother was a native of York state. For seven or eight years previous to her marriage she taught school, part of this time in Goldendale. She died November 25, 1900. The following children were born to this marriage: Bessie M., now at Bellingham, Washington, attending the state normal school, and Bertie C., living with an uncle near Pullman, Washington. Mr. Darland is fraternally connected with the K. of P., A.0.U.W. and the Rathbone Sisters. Politically, he is a Democrat. He was nominated for sheriff of Klickitat county in 1874, and came within four votes of election in a Republican county. He has been quite active in politics in past years, and used to attend the state and county conventions regularly. He owns a farm in Latah county, Idaho, but his home is in Goldendale. In the early days he did considerable freighting between The Dalles, Oregon, and Ellensburg, Washington, bringing flour and other goods back from Yakima City. He now devotes his entire time to his soliciting business *********** http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.klickitat/2581 The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., March 16, 1912, page 9 ISAAC DARLAND DEAD Passing Away of an Old Time Pioneer - One of the Best Known and Most Highly Esteemed Citizens of Our County. Isaac C. Darland, one of Klickitat's oldest pioneers, died early Friday morning, March 15, at the residence of his brother, George, of Spring Creek. Mr. Darland was born in Illinois Dec. 30, 1849. He was seventeen years old when he came west with his parents across the Plains, and he was one of a posse of immigrants, and a detachment of soldiers from Fort Hallock, that followed the Indians who attacked their wagon train and stole all his father's horses and mules. Arrangements for the funeral of have not been made as we go to press. --------- The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., March 23, 1912, page 2 "Klickitat Intelligence" A Lyle correspondent, who was intimately acquainted with the late Isaac C. Darland, says: The death of Isaac C. Darland at the farm of his brother George, on Spring Creek, near Blockhouse, closes the career of a man whose life has been interwoven with the pioneer industrial and political affairs of Klickitat county. Mr. Darland was born in Illinois in 1849, crossed the plains in 1866 and settled at Ilwaco with his parents. "Ike," as he was known to close friends, was not a strong boy. On the advice of the late Dr. August

Kinney, of Astoria, he came to Klickitat County in 1870 for his health. The first wages he earned after arrival was riding after cattle for the late Ben E. Snipes. Mr. Darland married Miss Sarah Howse, the daughter of an Oregon pioneer, in 1871 . She died in 1882, survived by four children. Mr. Darland married Miss Lydia M. Kurtz in 1884. She died in 1900. Two children were born to the latter marriage. The surviving children are: Merton, a traveling man, of Portland, Or.; Louis, of Hood River; Earl, of Goldendale, and Bert of Seattle; and Miss Bessie M. Darland, a teacher in the Washington State Normal School. Mr. Darland, in business for himself, first engaged in raising cattle and horses. Later he bought a livery stable at Goldendale, after acquiring a mail contract, when the only means of transportation in Klickitat Valley was by stage and wagon. It has been said that "Ike" drove the stage that made the first trip from The Dalles to Ellensburg. Mr. Darland was a frequent delegate to Democratic state conventions. President Cleveland appointed him Postmaster of Goldendale in 1893. About this time, with the late William Cumming, he succeeded in organizing the Farmers' Mercantile Company, which developed into a department store. After Mr. Darland's wife died in 1900 he accepted a traveling position with a harvesting machinery company of Portland. He was traveling salesman for 10 years. *********** 1870 Census OR Marion Sublimity Pg 109 Line 18 1820 1576 Darling S. Isaac L. Bryson The only one of the first officers of Whitman county still living is Isaac L. Bryson of Garfield. He and Mrs. Bryson, in their comfortable home on an acre tract at the edge of town, are true types of the pioneers who built the Inland Empire. The story of their coming to the west--across the plains to Oregon when children, and to the Palouse country in the vigor of their young manhood and womanhook, is like the story of many of their neighbors of the days now passing in history.

Mr. Bryson crossed the plains as a boy, when in 1851 his father emigrated to Linn county, Oregon, where he took a claim and followed his trade of carpenter, building many houses in Albany and other neighboring towns. Mrs. Bryson came with her parents from Iowa in 1865, when 14 years old. Her Father, S. R. Darland, with his family of 10 children, had an outfit consisting of a spring wagon and two horses, another wagon with a four-horse team and another with a four-mule team. A heavy wagon drawn by five yoke of oxen carried a cook stove and camp equipage. When they crossed teh Missouri at Council Bluffs their train had increased to 60 wagons, and when at Fort Laramie it had 300 wagons under a guide, Captain Weyman. At Fort Laramie the party was held while its personnel was investigated for possible deserters--the Civil war was just over. Here also there was a disagreement as to the best route for the westward pilgrimage. The party was divided, the smaller number, in which Mrs. Bryson's father was included, taking the southern route, while Captain Weyman's party took the northern and what proved to be the better way, reaching Oregon several weeks ahead of the other. Indians were encontered in Utah by the Darland party, one man was killed, a boy struck by a poisened spear died in agony after several days, and a large number of the horses were stolen. Mrs. Bryson saw the man after he had been scalped and says it was hard for her to overcome her fear of Indians ever afterward. Snow was falling when they crossed the Cascades in October, and sleeping without shelter, the faces of the travelers would be covered with snow. She can never forget the arrival at Sublimity, Oregon, in Marion county, and the welcome of her uncle, Ben Hutton, and her mother's brother, who had preceded them to the land of the setting sun. This Ben Hutton was also an uncle of L. W. Hutton of Spokane, ahe and Mrs. Bryson being cousins. Here in the primitive surroundings of the pioneer Oregon settlements the boy and girl grew up, and when they in turn were married and ready to make a home for themselves and the children who had come to them, and like their parents they decided to cast their lot with the tide of immigration just turning toward the Palouse country. With their two little children they took the boat for The Dalles, shipping their stock on the same boat. Their equipment for starting life in the new country consisted of 32 head of cows and calves, six horses, wagons, ect. At The Dalles they started overland, traveling with the Gilliland and Fisher families, and Mr. and Mrs. Pettigo, parents of Mrs. Gilliland and Mrs. Fisher. On July 29, 1871, the party arrived at a point on the Palouse river eight miles above Colfax, now called Glenwood, and there they decided to locate, all taking claims on the river and proceeding to make for themselves homes. They chose the river bottom as providing hay for the stock and timber for building and fuel--no thought of farming in those day--all settlers came with the idea of making a stake by raising stock. For three months the Brysons lived in a tent, while Mr. Bryson and a man who had come with them cut and hewed logs for a cabin, and here, on August 26, their third child, Eva Alice, was born. No one but the mother and father were there when the little one, the first white child in what was to be Whitman county, was born. The man helping with the work in the timber had been hastily sent to bring the women who were neighbors, but when they came the new born babe had been bathed and dressed by the father. The cabin was finished, the big rough fireplace built, and Mr. Bryson, scorning the customary dirt floor of the settler's cabin, procured from Colfax the first flooring (undressed0 turned out by the mill just started by Hollingsworth & Perkins, put a real floor in his cabin and before winter storms were upon them the fires burned brightly on the pioneer hearth and the little family was comfortable and happy. Mrs. Bryson tells how a neighbor, making a home at the same time, but probably of less sturdy stock, appeared at the cabin one day when winter was upon them, leading a rawboned horse which carried his wife and two little children. "We are starved out and frozen out," he said, and the family was welcomed to the Bryson cabin, where they stayed several days. They were loaned the Bryson tent to supplement the poor shelter of their shack, which was made more secure, and they were encouraged to greater effort by the thrift and hardiness of their kindly neighbors. This was the sort of service rendered by the pioneeers, who, "made of sterner stuff" than others, were the very pillars in the structure of the new commonwealth.

When the new county was organized and Mr. Bryson became its first treasurer Mrs. Bryson had anxious days when she had the county funds concealed in her flour barrel, for the office of the treasurer was wherever he happened to be. He arranged to spend several days at a time in Colfax, the county seat, so that the scattered stock men of the county could come to him to pay their taxes. He made his headquarters at the Belcher store and with Captain Ewart, the newly appointed auditor. Later, when teh Bryson hogs fattened along the fertile river bottom, the treasurer took fresh pork and sausage to town as payment for his board with his friend Ewart. "It was a wonderful place to raise hogs, along the river," agree the pioneers, and it is easy to picture the luxuriance of the vegetation at Glenwood in its primeval state, for the wonderful springs there have been turned into pipes and furnish the fine water supply of Colfax. The spot is one of the favorite picnic grounds for Colfax people, and on summer days automobiles are parked in the shady spots along the river where once the Bryson cattle and hogs waxed fat. O. V. Bryson, eldest son of these pioneers, now farms a part of the original preemption claim which his father took in 1871. ************** Colfax Gazette, Whitman County, February 20, 1925 First Treasurer of Whitman County (An Account of his Death) Isaac L. Bryson, who was appointed the first treasurer of Whitman county when this county was set off from Stevens county in 1871 and who was elected treasurer for a second term at the first election held in the county, died last Saturday noon at his home in Garfield, aged 80 years. He had been ill for some time with Bright's disease. Mr. Bryson, who was born in Agency City, Iowa, November, 1845, crossed the plains to Oregon in 1851 and came to the Palouse country in 1871, settling on a homestead at Glenwood, about five miles from Colfax. For the last 20 years he has lived in Garfield. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Odell V. Bryson of Glenwood, Harry Bryson of Pendleton, Oregon, and Guy Bryson of Colfax, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Muncey, Richland, Wash.; Miss Ipha Lausch, Salem, Oregon; Mrs. Sylvia Smith, Tekoa, and Mrs. Zella Jones, Garfield. There are also 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Spalding, wife of Postmaster Spalding, had died quite suddenly early in the morning. Mrs. Spalding had been unwell for the past fortnight but was able to get around most of the time. The sympathy of the entire community is with Mr. Spalding and family in the hour of their sad bereavement. In Klickitat County, in the year 1883 Mr. Spalding married Miss Louisa, daughter of Samuel R. and Susanna Darland. Mrs. Spalding was born on November 10, 1862, and when only three years old, crossed the plains with her parents. She has nine brothers and sisters, namely, Ike C., a traveling salesman for an implement house; Levi, in San Francisco; Mrs. Mary Baker, in Forest Grove; Mrs. Hartnett Bryson, in Garfield; Mrs. Amanda Albertson, at Andrew, Ori.; Mrs. Alice Gilmore, North Yakima; James at Pullman; Charles, at Arlington; and George in Klickitat county. SPALDING, postmaster of the city of Goldendale, and a carpenter by trade, was born in Eaton county, Michigan, August 13, 1857, the son of Carlos and Helen (Andrews) Spalding. His father, a native of the Green Mountain state, born in Orleans county in 1823, was a farmer. He moved to Ohio with

his parents when twelve years old and was educated in the public schools of that state. In 1848 he went to Michigan and he lived there until 1877, when he came to Klickitat county. He continued to reside here until his death in 1896. He was of English parentage. His wife, a native of New York state, was ten years his junior. She moved to Michigan with her people in 1847 and there grew up and was married. She passed away in Klickitat county in 1887. Our subject received his education in the common schools of Michigan. He remained at home on the farm until nineteen years old, then came to Washington with his parents, and helped his father to open up a homestead. He worked on the land for two years, then took up the carpenter's trade, at which he worked off and on for a number of years. In 1883 and 1884 he followed his trade in Yakima City, and the seasons of 1887 and 1888 were spent in the same place. In 1897 he was appointed by President McKinley postmaster of Goldendale and in 1903 he was reappointed. The fact that he was given a second term is abundant proof that his discharge of the duties of his office has been satisfactory. In Klickitat county in the year 1883, Mr. Spalding married Miss Louisa, daughter of Samuel R. and Susanna (Hutton) Darland. Her father, a native of Indiana, was a farmer by occupation. He early removed to Illinois, thence to Iowa and thence in 1865 to Oregon, the trip being made across the Plains with ox teams. He came to Klickitat county in 1896 and took a ranch five miles northwest of Goldendale, but later he moved into the city, where he died in 1903. Mrs. Spalding's mother was of German descent, but she was born and married in Indiana. Mrs. Spalding was born on November 10, 1862, and when only three years old, crossed the Plains with her parents. She was educated in the common schools of Oregon. She has nine brothers and sisters, namely, Ike C. a traveling salesman for an implement house, with the state of Washington for his territory; Levi, in San Francisco; Mary Baker, in Forest Grove, Oregon; Mrs. Harnett Bryson, in Garfield, Washington; Mrs. Amanda Alberson, at Andrew, Harney county, Oregon, Mrs. Alice Gilmore, in North Yakima; James, at Pullman, Washington; Charles, at Arlington, Oregon; and George, in Klickitat county. Mr. Spalding have nine children, namely, Clyde, born in Klickitat county in 1884; Guy, born two years later; Ray, born the succeeding year; Edith, Martin, Lynn, Neva, and Gilman, all born in the county, the last named in 1902. Mr. Spalding is a Republican in politics and very active, taking great interest in all matters of local or national concern. He is very obliging in the discharge of his duties, and in all the relations of life he has always demeaned himself so as to cement to himself the good will and command the respect of those whom he is associated. ************ http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.klickitat/963 The Independent, Goldendale, WA., May 28, 1914, page 1 HOWARD M. SPALDING Howard M. Spalding, Postmaster of Goldendale for seventeen years, died at his home in this city last Tuesday morning, following several months suffering from cancer. He had lived in the Klickitat Valley since 1877, coming here from Michigan at the age of 19 with his father and mother, who settled upon a homestead in the Blockhouse country. Beginning work at the carpenter’s trade in 1879, he followed it in this valley and the Yakima country until 1897 when he was appointed postmaster by President McKinley, an office which he held until the time of his death to the eminent satisfaction of the people. He was married in 1883 to Louisa Darland, nine children being born to them, of whom seven are still living, all residents of this city. In the death of Howard Spalding, Goldendale loses one of her most influential and highly respected citizens. A man of strong personality, with definite convictions upon all subjects with which he dealt, he had attached to himself the friendship and loyal affection of his numerous acquaintances throughout the entire valley. His frankness and love of fair play were among the strongest of his characteristics, and he was, withal, so thorough-capable and so well informed of matters of public opinion as to create for him a unique position in local affairs. Pride and keen interest in all things connected with the growth and advancement of Goldendale led him to contribute largely of his time and means toward any movement leading to this end. A musician of much native ability, he had been a member of the Goldendale Band since the time of its inception years ago. In fact, music and baseball were the matters in which he took the

greatest interest, and it is largely because of his efforts that Goldendale has been so well represented along both of these lines. The lack of his counsel concerning these matters, made valuable by years of experience, will be keenly felt. The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal Church at 10:30 Thursday morning, the service being conducted by the Knights of Pythias, of which lodge Mr. Spalding had long been an active member. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, where his wife and two children are buried. plains with his family, locating near Salem, Oregon. In 1876 he came to Klickitat county, Washington, taking the homestead, where he now lives, but has since added to his original purchase until he now owns 280 acres of well improved land. He has a good dwelling, also barns and outbuildings for the convenience of stock. George H. Darland, the subject of this sketch, now owns 320 acres of well improved land, seven miles northwest of Goldendale, and 160 acres as a homestead, making a total of 480 acres. He devotes his time principally to wheat-raising, and his average crop yields about thirty-five bushels per acre. He also has good and substantial buildings, a large orchard, etc. Mr. Darland was married in December, 1887, to Miss Mary Hale, then of this county, but a native of Missouri, and a daughter of W.H.
