Notes for Martin Adolphe Camus "Adolph Cames"
He spelled his middle name as 'Adolphe' and 'Adolphus'. Also, he sometimes
spelled his last name as "CAMES". (He pronounced his last name as CAMES.)
In his Marriage License, dated June 3, 1863, his name was KAMES. Note that
he signed with an X which would indicate that he probably could not read or write.
His brother-in-law Peter Pero was the witness.
Supposedly, he married Lucy in August 1863 in a RC ceremony. In Family Search
Community Trees, Lucy and Adolph were married again on 4 Feb 1872
at St. Joseph's in North Sydney. The abstract of the Parish Register
indicates that his mother's name was Catherine MacKitney. (I can't get
FamilySearch to correct it.)
After Lucy died, he married twice more. His second wife was Annie Beaton, the widow
of Neil McNeil and his third wife was Mary Jane Landry. Steven White, the Acadian Geanealogist, researched Mary Jane
Landry's family (as a branch of his LeBlanc family). Steven indicated that Mary Jane's given name was probably
something else.
Descendants of Etienne Marriette and Anna Catherine Boutilier page 13

Oral history indicates that Mary Jane had a son George and she changed his name to
George Camus after she married Adolphe.
In 1875, he advertised that he was a barber and hairdresser.
In 1880, he put an ad in the newspaper trying to sell his barbershop, 23 acre
farm, crops, building, and cow because he wanted to move out of the country.
Source: Mildred Howard.
He was buried by Dooley Funeral Home from St. Joseph's on a Sunday. Dooley records
indicate that he was buried in St. Joseph's cemetery in North Sydney (aka Goat Hill).
There was a three line obituary - no names mentioned.
The Marriage License in 1901 to Mary Landry indicates that his parents were
Peter Camus and Catherine Martinie.
His Death Certificate indicates that he was born in St. Malo, France.
Oral history: According to one Acadian researcher, Adolph was an Acadian descendant
whose ancestors were from Nova Scotia. The researcher indicates that the Acadian
Camus family was re-settled by the British to St. Servan, Brittany, France
with hundreds of other exiles. The researcher claims that an
uncle later moved to Newfoundland and that some of that uncle's descendants
settled in Chiticamp. He also claims that the family included Camus in St. Pierre.
According to a Camus descendant, Adolph periodically visited cousins in St. Pierre.
I have not been able to connect Adolph to Camus families in Newfoundland,
Cheticamp or St. Pierre.
Children of Lucy Boutilier and Martin Adolphe Camus "Adolph Cames" were as follows:
117 i Catherine5
Camus "Kate", born 1864 in Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died
1932 in Brockton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She married Tom Brady. Notes: My mother's aunt
Kate was and still is a mystery to me. I've discovered little bits and pieces of information about her
over time but still not enough to really feel comfortable writing about her. I learned early in her life
that: she had left home to work in Boston; she had cared for a widow's children; and later married the
widow (Tom Brady). A few years ago, I learned that she lived in Weymouth MA at the time of my
grandmother's death. I researched that fact and found that she moved from there after 1926. Later, I
found that she died in Brockton MA in 1932. Finally, I learned that in 1892 she left Boston to visit
her brother who was ill. I tried to get more information from her step-daughter's husband but
unfortunately, for some reason, he would not discuss her wife's step-mother.

My mother told us about the wonderful times she had spent visiting the family of her uncle John Camus in North
Sydney. In fact, she corresponded with her first cousin Regis for years. There are photos of Regis and my Tobin
grandfather in Mom's scrapbook.
Little is known about this family, probably due to my mother and aunt living most of their lives in Glace Bay and
elsewhere.
According to Joanne Fraser, there are markers in Old St. Joseph's for two of John and Jessie's children:
1. Camus, child, died 12 Oct. 1903 aged 2 months 12 days. (I have not found a birth baptismal or death record for this
child.)
2. Camus, daughter, died 11 Apr. 1901 aged 3 years 5 months and 16 days. (Also, I have not found a birth baptismal
or death record for this child.)

William Richard Tobin "WR", born 27 Aug 1870 in Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada; christened 1870 in Channel,
Newfoundland, Canada; died 14 Dec 1922 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; buried 17 Dec 1922 in Holy
Cross, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, son of Richard Francis Tobin and Honora Catherine Dooley
"Nora".
Notes for Mary Ann Camus "Nan"
In the Diocese of Antigonish database, for her marriage to WR Tobin her surname was recorded as Cames.
Notes for William Richard Tobin "WR"
According to my aunt May Tobin (aka WR) was born in Argentia, Newfoundland. As she
told it, her grandparents were returning via their boat to their home in Channel
from visiting family in eastern Newfoundland when great grandmother went into labor.
They landed in Argentia Newfoundland where my Aunt May claimed that WR was born.
Descendants of Etienne Marriette and Anna Catherine Boutilier page 34
Joseph F. Petrie, Founding Member, Friends of Irish Research
Grandfather listed Channel as his birthplace on official documents.
I have a copy of his Baptismal Certificate from Channel.
WR and his sister Mary Elizabeth were the only children born in Newfoundland.
The rest of the children were born in North Sydney.
WR attended Dalhousie until he was 20. I think he left to join the service and
I think that he was a veteran of the Boer War in South Africa and maybe even
saw action in South Africa. (I can't confirm it!) His grave in
Holy Cross Cemetery in North Sydney has a marker for the United
Empire Service League which indicates that he spent some time in the service.
After leaving Dalhousie he read for the Bar. On October 5, 1893, the CASKET
reported that he passed his Law Exams.
On July 23, 1895, the CASKET reported that he took the FINAL Law Exams.
On Sept. 19, 1895, the CASKET reported that he passed the FINAL Law Exams.
On October 24, 1895, the CASKET reported that he was admitted to the Bar on
October 17, 1895.
In 1896, he advertised that he was a Barrister - Solicitor - Attorney at Law -
Conveyancer practicing across from the Hotel Vendome in North Sydney.
In North Sydney, he was a Councilor.
Sometime about 1901 - 1902, he moved to Glace Bay. I'm speculating that
Grandfather wanted to move on because Glace Bay was starting to boom,
because he and his wife had lost their first child, a son (buried in Old St.
Joseph's) and because his father died about 1900 - 1901.
In 1902, he was a member of the Glace Bay Rugby Team, the championship team.
He was an Alderman in Glace Bay.
He was the town solicitor.
He was a Commissioner (an appointed member) of the Glace Bay School Board.
In 1907, he was visiting his mother at her Archbold S tNorth Sydney home when he noticed fire coming from St.
Joseph's Catholic Church on Convent St. According to my aunt, grandfather raced to the church and saved the sacred
vessels.
Mother and my aunt always thought that his death in 1922 was sudden. In reality,
he died of a heart condition that had been diagnosed about a year before.
He was stricken in the Court Room and taken to his home (on the way to
St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay). He died before he reached the hospital.
Interestingly, the Death Certificate and Dooley Funeral Home records indicate that
Grandfather was born in North Sydney in March 1870. (The Dooley record
was the source of the Death Certificate.) I think that the oral history was correct and
have always used it

Children of Mary Ann Camus "Nan" and William Richard Tobin "WR" were as follows:
323 i Douglas Anselm6
Tobin, born 1901; died 1901 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada;
buried in Old St. Joseph's (Goat Hill), North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Notes:
Douglas Anselm is buried with his grandfather Tobin.
324 ii Mary Aloysia6
Tobin "May", born 22 Jun 1902 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada;
christened 29 Jun 1903 in St Anne's, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 25 Dec
1985 in Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; buried 28 Dec 1985 in Holy Cross, North Sydney,
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Notes: May Tobin was the true genealogist of the North Sydney
Tobins. When she was twelve, she was inoculated against diseases that were brought back to Canada
by returning soldiers. As a result of an allergic reaction to the inoculation, May was left almost
totally visually impaired. Within ten years, she lost both parents while being educated at Mount Saint
Vincent in Halifax. Financial difficulties due to the death of her father, forced May to leave the
Mount and live at the School for the Blind in Halifax. From there, she completed her Normal School
education. She taught French at the School for the Blind for over 40 years. She completed her
career in Middle Musquoduobit. May established a three year cycle of: a summer of school, a
summer with my family, a summer of travel to wonderful places - the world capitals in Europe, the
shrines in Europe, shrines in Ireland, major cities in Canada and the USA. Her last international trip
in the early 1980s was to Australia and Fiji. May taught me French. I was so fluent that I took 2
years of High School French in the same year. Her Christmases and other holidays were normally
spent either with Ted and Nonie Lohnes or with the MacIntyres in Halifax. (Nonie was a Tobin first
cousin and they traveled together after Ted died.) When she finally retired after 50 years of teaching,
she retired with her Normal School Certificate, a Bachelors, and enough credits for a Masters. Not
long after she retired, she was unable to read. She had readers and writers - she still corresponded
with a legion of friends. At my urging, she wrote the oral history on both of my parents' families. May
was the best family genealogist that I have ever been exposed to. Her oral histories were amazingly
accurate. After she retired from teaching, she retired to St. Patrick's Manor in Halifax. She died there
on Christmad Day, 1985. Source: Joe Petrie
325 iii Loretta Elizabeth6
Tobin "Ethel", born 7 Mar 1904 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,
Canada; christened 13 Mar 1904 in St Anne's, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died
22 Jan 1979 in Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 25 Jan 1979 in Mount St. Benedict,
Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: My mother was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Mom
was christened at St. Anne's in Glace Bay, Because of her mother's illness (breast cancer), Mom was
sent to Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax as a teenager. She graduated in 1921 at age 17.
After she graduated in 1921 she attended Mount Saint Vincent College. She also began reading for
the Bar. The game plan was to join her father in his law firm when she graduated from college in
1924. In 1922, when her father passed away, she was a sophomore at Mount St. Vincent College.
She completed the year and returned to Glace Bay to teach at St. Anne's. She taught at St. Anne's
until 1926. During her summer vacations from 1922 to 1925, she worked for the Dominion Coal
Company in Glace Bay. In 1926, because of the miner's strike, Mom left Glace Bay to work in
Boston for the summer-time. She stayed in Boston. Mom met Leo Petrie, from Dominion, married
him and had 5 pregnancies. In 1936, the Petrie family moved to Dedham where she raised her 3 sons.
On January 16, 1939. she was naturalized under the name of Lorretta Elizabeth Petrie. In 1946, after I
started school, Mom returned to work. She had a variety of jobs. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at
Rosen'sHardware. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at North American Aluminum. She was a partner
at Atlantic Aluminum. She was a clerk at Tobe Deutchmann Electronics. She was a cashier at Stop
and Shop. She was a bookkeeper at the Dedham Transcript and at Ziegler's Market. In addition, she
was a substitute teacher in the Dedham school system. Also, she demonstrated consumer products for
two manufacturers at local retail grocery stores. She also taught at home - private tutoring neighbor's
children and her kids. It was a pro bono, volunteer activity which she loved. Our house was always
full of relatives and friends. Often, we kids would go to bed and wake up the next day on couches
because our parents needed beds for guests to sleep in. My Mom's sister stayed with us every third
summer. Molly Petrie stayed with us every January and April! Many of Mom's Cape Breton cousins

often visited. In the 1950s, Mom became active in the local chapter of the Mount Saint Vincent's
Alumnae Association. For over two decades she served as President or as another officer in the local
chapter. Hobbies: Playing cards, teaching her 10 grandchildren to play cards, ironing, crossword
puzzles. reading novels, and writing poetry. Mom died in her sleep of a stroke. Source: Joe Petrie

1 Any errors or omissions are mine. Please contact me at [email protected] to add records, to correct records,
to update records, to add to records, etc. 2 Please note that for the Antigonish Catholic Diocese records where there were multiple records for christenings
involving two parishes (usually Sacred Heart in Sydney and another parish), I recorded the information for only one of
the two parishes.
